Leak proof water bottle for 5 year old starting school

My niece is starting school in a few weeks I want to get her a few presents and she is still in need of a water bottle. This is in the list of things they need provided by the school.

Could anyone please recommend a good leak proof bottle? Ideally it would come in colours and patterns a 5 year old girl would like. Also I know from my own bottles they can sometimes be difficult to clean so I think easy clean would be good. Thanks.

We've found the asda ones good and easy to clean, limited designs though

Camelbak Eddy Kids is fantastic. They are about £15 but you can replace the spout as and when needed for a few pounds and are the only ones we've found that don't leak. Easy to open too for little fingers.

YY to Camelbak Eddy. I’m using one I bought her I was pg with DS 14 years ago. DD and DS have kids ones (smaller, patterned) that I bought them when DD started school, she’s now going into Y5.

You can buy spare valves and straws too.

Thabks I'll check these out. I think the replaceable bits are a good call. As I'm not the one buy all millions of other things she needs I can spend a bit more! But equally will weigh it up with it possibly getting lost. I'm not sure how great she'll be at keeping track of her things!

The best and cheapest ones I've found are the sort of elongated doughnut shaped ones from running shops.

Don't know she is not my child. It's on the list from school so it's expected to be provided.

Imo children are still people and should have access to water when they want. I don't think there are many adults who would be happy with not being allowed access to water when they want.

Camel Bak are great but expensive if she loses it/gets stolen which is bound to happen. I’d keep the better bottles for home and the leakier ones for school. It will be left on the playground or thrown into lost and found or taken home by another child. If it’s a good brand you wouldn’t see it again for dust.

Gah! That's what I'm thinking too... I'm looking now and they're 15 to 17 pounds which I don'tinf paying but would then be a shame to lose it. I'll get my sisters opinion.

Kids have had water bottles in school for at least the last 15+ years.

We had water bottles 25 years ago!

The boys used to stick bogies on the water fountains so they were a no go!

Kids need on average 1.5l of water a day, your teacher friends can eye roll all they want. We understand the impacts of good hydration better now than we did a few decades ago. Water is vital for concentration and learning, kids need to keep drinking. Or do you only drink with meals? 🙄

I agree I would buy a few cheap bottles they will disappear. My DD lost a beautiful lunchbag and bottle of the first day. They were unique so whoever took them home would have realised they were someone else's. Never seen again repeat several times over!

Ion leakproof. You can usually pick them up in TK Maxx for very little money. We've only ever had to replace those that DS has lost - we've never had one leak or smash. In fact DH and I own them now. I'm happy to chuck mine in my handbag.

Some models come with a wrist strap - ideal if your kid is the sort who drops them repeatedly in the road on the walk to School (which mine used to).

One Green Bottle metal ones, maybe with a spare lid. I have one from dd1’s YR year still happily working (with a new lid). It’s not trendy enough to get nicked, and it’s survived being sat on, tied on to the end of a skipping rope and spun etc.

I have found the sistema bottles good. We are a very uncool family, so anything tricky to close would have led to regular flooding, but I can only think of a couple of times they leaked.

Klean Kanteen with a loop cap are leakproof. The plain steel one happily goes in the dishwasher. DD1 has hers for 8 years. It should last her lifetime and beyond.

She's a first child so a bit more timid and sensitive than her wild sister. This would really upset her!

So I'll consider this. I wonder if I get her name on it? I don't know hos I'd do this. I just assume there's a service somewhere!

Sistema are good and fairly cheap, they generally don't leak. It also needs to be easy for her to open. It sounds silly, but worth checking. They are also softer plastic, so when it gets dropped it won't crack like the hard plastic ones, or dent like the metal ones.

It really does need to be leak proof. It'll probably get put in her book bag with her reading record at some point and it'll save accidents.

Plenty of places do sticky labels for school stuff.

Her parents should have some labels for school stuff, otherwise Stikins are fantastic and don't fade in the dishwasher.

I've come to the conclusion that the only bottles that don't leak are the Sistema ones. Everything else has been crap (5 kids equals a shit load of water bottles). Most recent purchase was a Contigo one, at a ridiculous price, that lasted a few weeks before leaking around the seal. I genuinely don't know why someone can't design a decent bottle that a 4 year old can easily use.

Looking at some of these for Dd who is a perennial bottle loser. Also I'm a teacher. No teacher I know of rolls eyes at water bottles. We encourage them to drink plenty of water and most of us carry around water bottles ourselves to keep our voices working!
