Why is the Green Party not more popular?

HarryBoa · 22/08/2021 20:08

I mean if there were ever a time that they should be relevant it's now, no?

Was talking to the DC about political parties and they asked why people weren't supporting the Green Party because of global warming.

I wanted to reply "Because people want what they've got" but resisted the urge to make a trite reply.

Wondered what other people thought? For myself I'm actually seriously considering moving my support to the Green Party but the ultimate concern is that the voting system that we have means that they're fighting a losing battle.

Well I think they're ace! Particularly Caroline Lucas.

MichelleScarn · 22/08/2021 20:11

Because they hate women for me. Or non-man as they would call me.

BlueThursday · 22/08/2021 20:15

They’ve been power sharing here in Scotland for a while.

Other than being pro independence they (Scots greens) seem very happy to pally up with the SNP who believe Scotland’s economy can survive on North Sea oil Hmm

I meant other than pro independence I don’t know any of their policies

HarryBoa · 22/08/2021 20:16

@MichelleScarn would it make any difference to you if Shahrar Ali took over leadership?

OP posts:
TooWicked · 22/08/2021 20:17

I’ve just joined the Green Party, purely to vote for Sharar Ali in the leadership elections.

If he doesn’t win I shall be leaving straight away as they generally seem to loathe women.

HasaDigaEebowai · 22/08/2021 20:20

They’re not good on women’s rights (although they’re not alone there) but fundamentally because it’s a wasted vote. Labour or conservative are the only parties who can get in (in England). But in a situation where one or the other of the two main parties were a sure thing it would be a good message vote to encourage the two main parties to focus on climate.

TheFnozwhowasmirage · 22/08/2021 20:25

As they had a man running the Women's group and appear to hate women ( sorry, non men),I don't think that they'd want this woman's vote.
Nothing would induce me to become a member or vote for a party which would happily silence women and do away with their rights.

AtlasNeverShrugged · 22/08/2021 20:25

Because they hate women.

Because they're more concerned about pronouns than the environment.

Because they cancel and silence anyone who dares disagree with them.

ThisIsSimplyBeyond · 22/08/2021 20:25

I was a member, and told by an important representative that my biological essentialism (or some such crap) wasn't welcome.

Perhaps Shahar Ali will disagree, if he wins

MissMarpleTheMurderer · 22/08/2021 20:26

Because they hate women, because being 'green' is a show designed to oppress the poor. Take Electric cars, the energy they take to make, the electricity to run them (and where exactly is this energy coming from), the fact that battery's degrade, can't be recycled and need replacing at extortionate cost. Because people that champion green causes are happy to fly around for 'business ' but castigate people having a holiday. Because large business (and countries) are exempt but householders are expected to fund green initiatives.

Indecisivelurcher · 22/08/2021 20:27

I don't think many people on the street will know about the women's rights reasons. It'll be what Hasa said above, people think it's a wasted vote.

MissMarpleTheMurderer · 22/08/2021 20:27

And this, we need a man to stand up for women's rights, as all the other women look the other way
PicsInRed · 22/08/2021 20:29

They're economically unviable and also fixated fundamentalists generally - that's always bad for women in the end.

You’re put off by a load of over grown plants? 😂

I’ve read all of the main manifestos during the last election. The greens is the one that chimed the most.

The biggest problem is our voting system. Apparently only one other country in Europe has the same “first past the post” system as us. Our democracy is outmoded, outdated and favours the same old tired out of touch bullshit politics.

HarryBoa · 22/08/2021 20:31

I had read that Shahrar Ali is running for leadership and supports the sex-based rights of women and girls.

For those of you listing their stance on women as a reason (and that's really interesting, thank you), would this make a difference? Particularly given Labour's current stance on this issue?

Have you crunched the numbers then..
donquixotedelamancha · 22/08/2021 20:31

It would make a huge difference to me. A fair amount of the current leadership come across as (not just anti women but) anti-science and anti-reason.

I don't want to vote green and get a shower of idiots but Ali winning would be a powerful signal. He can at least articulate and argument.

HarryBoa · 22/08/2021 20:33

@Iggly yes I agree. Our voting system seems inherently flawed. I watched the Dominic Cummings interview recently and I've never simultaneously despised and agreed with someone so much - he made a similar point (albeit more in the context of leadership).

Me too. I’ve voted Green many years ago when Labour or the Lib Dem’s didn’t appeal but they’ve been so hateful towards women for so long now I couldn’t even consider them for a protest vote. Hopefully Sharah Ali can restore some sanity and get back to environmental issues.

I can imagine re Dominic.

I feel so angry still when I think that the Lib Dema came close to getting real change in our democratic system and then wimped out with that nonsense referendum on “Alternative Voting”.

DazzlePaintedBattlePants · 22/08/2021 20:36

In addition to their stance on the rights of women, my perception is that they don’t live in the real world, and can’t square up their policies with the reality of the modern world, which runs on large, modern businesses and their needs.

My opinion may be misinformed, but until I am convinced they actually understand how the real world works, I have them pigeonholed as not having the serious chops to run large organisations.

Would be different at a county level, although right now I’d vote for anyone who’s prepared to admit that small villages need sustainable growth, not to stagnate.

SpindleWhorl · 22/08/2021 20:37

Because with the exception of a few people like Sharhar Ali and Andrea Carey-Fuller, they're a bunch of misogynistic arseholes.

HarryBoa · 22/08/2021 20:37

Yes it's a bit worrying that some are making decisions based on plants growing on the pavement, highlighted by the Daily Mail.

It reminds me of my SIL who decided that Ed Milliband was a fool based on how he ate a bacon sandwich, again highlighted by the Daily Mail.

The media is such a powerful force in this. It's worrying.
