Bit of a random one but I need a new iPhone and don't know where to start - help!

Showing my age here! Any ladies who know about this stuff please help!

I would like a newer/better iPhone than I currently have. I have an iPhone 7 Plus (bigger model as I read a lot on my phone - don't we all!)

I would like something new but not necessarily the most recent with lots of storage space and which takes great photos. Which model will offer me best value for money and which provider? I'd prefer not to pay more than £40 p/month but guess I can be flexible.

What are my options if I bought the phone upfront?

Thanks so much to anyone who can help this oldie navigate the phone minefield!

The iPhone SE 2020. Brilliant phone and cheaper than many of the others.

FuzzyPenguin · 22/08/2021 18:34

I would recommend buying the cloud storage rather than going for a larger capacity phone as this can reduce the price and I like the idea of my photos being safe in the cloud in case something happens to my phone.

I have just upgraded to a 12 mini as I wanted a better camera with night mode and I couldn’t justify the cost of a 12. So far so good with it, and I do all my browsing on it and am having no problems with the screen size. I was on an XR before which has served me well.

As far as contracts go have a look on a compare site. I was lucky we could pay my phone outright so am now on a sim only deal which works out better although I appreciate not everyone can do this.

I recently bought a refurbished iPhone XS Max 256gb for £320 on a website called loop mobile. I was also looking at gif gaff aswell- they've got some really good deals on.
I am so happy with my phone, I got a grade good but tbh the condition is so much better.
I did a lot of looking around in different websites and found loop mobile. Was a bit nervous as I'd never heard of them but I'd read the reviews and took a gamble and for me, it paid off.
(Sorry if it sounds like an ad- I'm just really chuffed with my phone Grin)

Just came on to say this! My iPhone 8 died . So got the se 2020. Same size as the 8 but the tech of the 12 or something like that

Another vote for the SE2020!

Paid cash for mine and have kept my Smarty rolling contract which is less than a tenner a month.

noshiforever · 22/08/2021 19:52

Oh the iPhone SE 2020 is looking very interesting. Will investigate this evening!

But if you delete photos off your phone doesn't it delete them from the cloud storage too or have I misunderstood?

If you look on sites such as affordable mobiles you can good deals for phones if you are not going for a newly released model. I would not go straight to one of the main networks direct as thats always more expensive. It's often cheaper to keep sim and phone separate Apple do 24 months interest free on lots of their phones if you don't have cash to buy u/f.

MMAMPWGHAP · 22/08/2021 20:09

I also need a new iPhone but am waiting. New model will be announced around mid Sept and old models then reduce in price.
Agree that bulk of photos better in cloud (preferably somewhere else too, eg laptop).

Thanks so much for the tip about Apple doing interest free. That might suit me best - thank you!

Really? Mid sept? Interesting, I'll see if I can put off until then

I bought mine from Apple directly a couple of years ago - I think it’s an iPhone 10, and I paid for it in interest free credit -around £25 a month for 2 years. I have a GiffGaff sim that costs me £7 a month. I just ported over my number on to the GiffGaff sim on my old phone, and the assistant in the Apple store transferred everything to my new phone when I bought it.

Soontobe60 · 22/08/2021 21:25

I pay 79p a month for cloud storage.

Thats what I thought too.

Worst iphone I have ever had. Constant issues with clashes between wifi calling and cellular calling. 1 in 10 calls people cant hear me. Have to use speaker half the time otherwise I cant them properly or they cant hear me.

Thought I had a dud but my best friend bought it at the same time. Same problems.

Photos are pants because they have put a limiter on them. You can tell from Video quality that it has the capability but they come out pants. Portrait mode not available for anything but a human face - on other photos you can use this for all manner of objects and have nice bokeh.

Freezes sometimes and battery life is shite and dies after a full charge before work home time even though max I use it a day is 2.5 hrs (probably more like 1-1.5) for light net browsing or instagram, no music, no podcasts, no videos etc.

Have literally just bought an iphone 11 and will keep this as a backup.

LemonSwan · 22/08/2021 22:06

typo - on other iphones* you can use this for all manner of objects and have nice bokeh.

userxx · 22/08/2021 22:25

I love my SE. Not had any of those problems and the picture quality is brilliant I think. I only use it for making calls, texting, checking bank balances etc and the battery life seems fine to me 🤷‍♂️

Toddlerteaplease · 22/08/2021 22:43

I had the XS Max and it was great. Recently upgraded to the 12 and it wasn't worth doing, but probably would be if you've got the 7.

Bagelsandbrie · 22/08/2021 22:45

If you’re willing to spend £40 plus a month I’d just go for the newest iPhone you can with the most storage you can. I’ve got an iPhone XS Max, I pay £25 for my line rental / monthly package (unlimited everything and 90Gb) and £35 a month for the phone itself. Some will think that’s a lot of money but I love having a new phone and use it non stop so I think it’s worth it.

NeverTalkToStrangers · 22/08/2021 23:03

Definitely wait for the 13 to come out - all the other models will get cheaper then. I like to buy the newest model available and keep it for 5 years until it’s no longer supported - I think that’s pretty cost effective.

Who's that with please? As that sounds really reasonable?
