Did you like having a birthday then as a child and did you like being one of the oldest in the year? Do you like your birthday now?

I'm just curious really! I know the benefits of being born in these months and my ds is an autumn baby.

I was a summerborn as was dh and most of my friends, but I always liked being one of the younger ones, birthday being far from Christmas and in generally better weather.

Thinking about all this and ds birthday comes up in autumn!

Yep, September birthday here and I think that’s about as good as it gets. I always felt it broke up the lull between summer and Christmas, and spring has Easter to look forward to. My birthday is late September though. My sister has one in the first days of September and it was always either the first week back at school or just before, so she never really had her friends make a fuss of it. Now she’s a teacher it’s a pretty rubbish birthday for her too.

My birthday is half way between the end of school summer hols and Christmas. I rather like that it breaks up this dreary time, along with bonfire night and Halloween etc. Where/when I went to primary school, year groups were spilt by your age on1 Jan, so I was one of the youngest. Came back to Uk for secondary, and became one of the eldest, but we had a run of 5 consecutive birthdays in my form, including mine, which we really liked.

DS is very old in his year. Oldest boy, will be eldest child when he goes back to school. He hates it, because everyone (teachers, Cub leaders, spurts coaches etc) always tries to make him a leader, when his personality is much more team member-y. although it had stood him in very good stead. This is compounded by being 99th centile tall and alphabetically high in the alphabet.

He’s always been quite immature for his age. He would have struggled with school he’d been a few days earlier still, and born in August.

My birthday is during the first week of October. I love it. It’s usually nice and autumnal by then, and as soon as it’s over I start looking forward to Christmas!

I also liked being one of the older kids in my year at school Grin

End of October - breaks up the time between Summer and Christmas. Went to school in Scotland so was in the younger part of the year. I’ve always liked my birthday.

PhantomErik · 21/08/2021 21:50

December birthday here & I love it.

Being one of the older ones at school was good.

Anything to do with the lead up to Christmas feels like the lead up to my birthday so extra fun.

As an adult it can be hectic around my birthday because it's near Christmas so the school play might be on etc but it's what you make it in my opinion.

I would never choose a summer birthday & wish I'd planned my ds's due dates a bit better.

LivingLaVidaBabyShower · 21/08/2021 21:54

November here

its not the best tbh
Far away enough from christmas but weather is always terrible dark and wet and cold and getting people out is a ball ache.

Academically it served me well though so swings and roundabouts i guess

Late September. I've always loved it. I liked being the oldest at school. Don't know why! The weather is usually lovely.

HilaryBriss · 21/08/2021 22:05

Mid-September here. I was one of the oldest in my year at school but other than that, have never really though about it. It's my birthday, that's all. It's never affected anything.

Ginger1982 · 21/08/2021 22:07

I'm December and I wouldn't choose it. Too close to Christmas so have to wait all year for presents, 'joint' presents, no-one free or having money to go out to celebrate due to other Christmas parties, venues hike prices up, shitty weather.

ToooOldForThis · 21/08/2021 22:07

In Scotland that makes you one of the young ones!

Saz12 · 21/08/2021 22:08

Late October. But in Scotland that made me amongst the youngest in my year. I went to uni at 16 (turned 17 a couple weeks into first term), so can’t honestly say it made a difference academically.

I loved my October birthday - was perfect through school as everyone had settled into year. Great at uni as had got to know everyone enough to arrange a meet-in-the-union (in first year but then in tutorials/ lectures/ interest groups in subsequent years), same for “graduate job” thereafter.

Papergirl1968 · 21/08/2021 22:24

Late October here so often half term which was good. I don’t think I really cared about being one of the oldest in the year.
Could someone please explain about Scotland? So kids born in January are the oldest in the school year, and those born in December are the youngest? Instead of kids born in September being the oldest and those born in August the youngest like in the rest of the UK?

Justgettingbye · 21/08/2021 22:28

My birthday was the start of December and I always liked it as the rule was the Xmas decos couldn't go up until I'd had my bday Grin
Parties were a downside as everyone was booked up for Christmas and we were doing fun stuff at school which overshone.

But I like it now

EileenGC · 21/08/2021 22:31

Where I grew up it was also Jan-Dec, so it goes by year of birth. Primary school starts the year you turn six, so for this September:

Year 1 will be all those born in 2015
Year 2 born 2014
Year 3 born 2013
Year 4 born 2012

And so on. About a third of the kids will of course not be 6 yet, but they will turn 6 before January. In my class the youngest girl had a 27th December birthday.

I believe Scotland is a little bit different due to flexible deferrals etc, but not that far off this model.

Restingbitchface01 · 21/08/2021 22:31

In Scotland children born in February are the youngest and children born in March are the oldest. Cut off date for August intake is 28th Feb. Children need to be 4 on that date to start school in August the same year.

MancMum2000 · 21/08/2021 22:32

Mine is Boxing Day…it’s shit!

LizzieSiddal · 21/08/2021 22:33

I don’t like my birthday which is in the winter, as is both my Dds birthdays, all within a month plus Xmas. It’s a busy time!

Onfire · 21/08/2021 22:35

I love my October birthday

CormoranStrike · 21/08/2021 22:36

November birthday here - absolutely middling when it came to class ages, and honestly none of us ever thought about it.

DukeOfEarlGrey · 21/08/2021 22:37

I never have it much thought, though remember it was very meaningful at the time to be one of the first in our year who was allowed to start driving lessons!

Katefoster · 21/08/2021 22:39

Our first baby is due on the 1st Dec and I'm hoping the come on time or a little early 🙏🏽 me and DH are summer born and while I liked it DH deff struggled more in school so he's very happy our child will be on the older side. I am sad that they'll have presents so close together but nothing we can do now

userxx · 21/08/2021 22:42

As a child used to love my December birthday but went off it as I got older. Going out for a meal is a nightmare because of all the Christmas parties. I'd love a summer birthday, bbq in the garden!

groundcontroltomontydon · 21/08/2021 22:44

As a kid I loved my birthday - it falls on a holy day of obligation and I went to a Catholic school so we all got a day off!

mrsjoyfulprizeforraffiawork · 21/08/2021 22:44

My birthday is 1st September, which made me the youngest in my school year in my area of SE England. Apparently, had I been born a day later, I would have been in the year below. This was a LONG time ago and things have probably changed now. I didn't like being treated in a slightly patronising manner by some of my classmates in my secondary school, I assume due to my age.

scrivette · 21/08/2021 22:44

September birthday - I have always liked having a September birthday. Some years the weather has been lovely and it meant that going back to school wasn't too bad as I had my birthday to look forward to. I liked being the eldest too.
