I just watched the parachute death from Hollyoaks. I’ve never watched Hollyoaks, but oh my god, it was so haunting. I felt terrified.

I’m not sure I recommend anyone watching it! The only other times I’ve really been affected by tv was on This is England the tv series - the rape by the stepfather and then the crack orgy for the young girl with all the skanky men. Both made me feel really ill.

The only other tv that gets to me is Futurama at the end of Jurassic Bark - the dog WAITED 😭

Anything that you couldn’t watch again/haunted you?

The impossible

Harrowing scenes of The Boxing Day Tsunami

So many already mentioned that were disturbing to watch and still haunt me, Especially anything based on real-life people or events.
I think one of the first that stuck with me was a 2-part film called Sybil, played by Sally Fields. It was based on a woman being seen by a psychiatrist because she had multiple personalities. She had no idea why, and in each session different personalities spoke to the doctor. Turned out she was so horrifically abused by her mother. I still remember the bit she goes back to her childhood house and remembers what happened.

CarbsAreNotMyFriend · 22/08/2021 03:52

@Crunchymum Oh God yes, etched in my memory too 😭

HurryUpAndStandThere · 22/08/2021 06:27

The scene in the train station at the end of Cathy come home, where the social services and police are forcibly removing her children while she's screaming and begging them not to. Has me sobbing every single time.
The end of the kids film The land that time forgot. I was heartbroken.

‘haunting’ doesn’t seem quite the right word.

Most examples are scenes of violent crime (including sexual crime), war or horror. Written and filmed to shock etc.

Mumoftwinadoes · 22/08/2021 08:37

I remember sneaking downstairs as a young child and catching a glimpse of Goodfellas, the scene where someone was in the boot of a car being stabbed by a really really big knife. That stayed with me for a long time.

Precious and the terrible sexual abuse she experiences.

Sons of Anarchy... Gemma's rape scene, and Tara's death.

I started reading this thread last night as I was falling asleep. I googled and watched the Hollyoaks parachute scene. I woke up this morning to a very vivid dream of my daughter falling out of the window. Horrible!

Thanks for this, just watched Jurassic Bark on you tube, poor doggy.

whynotwhatknot · 22/08/2021 09:54

MrsMaizel · 22/08/2021 10:10

When Brodie is hung in Homeland . I was convinced it was a joke .

NoProblem123 · 22/08/2021 10:13

Passion of the Christ - the whole film.

Easter is no longer about chocolate eggs & bunnies once you’ve watched that.

This is an incredible film and Sally Fields absolutely delivers. No one I know has watched this so thankyou for mentioning it.

Yes, getting rid of a main character is a cruel trick. There was a series on S4C called Parch where the main character died unexpectedly at the end. I was angry for a while.

Threads

The episode of inside no 9 called Christine, it showed her having flashbacks to quite a regular life as she was dying but you didn’t know she was dying.

Scum, the greenhouse rape scene and subsequent suicide

City of Life and death, almost all of it and it’s based on the true story about the rape of Nanking by the Japanese. State sanctioned rape and there are still a few so called comfort women fighting for justice,

Another two films that stand out for similar reasons
Casualties of War
The Accused

Both feature gang rape, the herd mentality is truly terrifying.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 22/08/2021 10:56

And yes, Schindler's List - though not the bit where Oskar loses it at the end (sad as it is) but the scene where they're taking the children away by truck and, realising, the mothers scream and try to follow

Goes straight through me ...

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 22/08/2021 11:16

Episode of traffic cops I think it was. With the sisters who kept running across the motorway and getting hit by cars. The whole event is surreal yet disturbing. Especially the aftermath when one went onto murder a man the following day

Redannie118 · 22/08/2021 11:21

2 more. The scene in Slumdog millionare where they gouge the street childs eyes out with a hot spoon because they make more money begging if they are blind. I know its fiction but you can bet your life stuff like that really goes on.
A safety advert a few years ago about speeding. This man kept seeing a little dead boy wherever he looked. The bit where he looked under his desk and theres his crumpled little body all bent and twisted to fit in small space and staring back with those glassy dead eyes. I couldnt sleep or look under my desk for months. Utterly horrific, but a fantastic safety message.

@LobotomisedIceSkatingFan
YES = that's the one! Thanks. I was training as a Counsellor then and working in a project that supported young women who had had CSA. We viewed it one evening and many of them said it was very accurate. I'd like to get hold of a copy but can't find it on Ebay or Amazon sadly.

Pebbledashery · 22/08/2021 11:55

This is quite ridiculous because you can quite clearly tell the film is fake.. But. The exorcist... The bit with the crucifix.. The bit with her mum.. The bit where her head does a 360, that fucking devil voice.. The whole thing.. I remember I recorded it on VHS on the TV.. After I watched it, I threw the video in the bin as I was so traumatised it would bring evil spirits into the home.. It's a hideous film.. I could never watch it again.

52andblue · 22/08/2021 11:57

@MydogWillow

I have read the book: 'Sybil' - it is an excellent examination of a person fragmenting into different people to cope with sustained and horrific abuse. Fascinating and very moving. I'd be interested in the film too.

Grammy78 · 22/08/2021 12:00

Hillsborough - the film by Jimmy McGovern, just awful knowing it was based on real life people and experiences. JFT97

When Yvonne got locked in the underground holding cell by Jim Fenner in Bad Girls.

iklboo · 22/08/2021 12:02

The Inside Number Nine episode 'Bernie Clifton's Dressing Room' reduces me to a blubbering wreck every time.

I thoroughly recommend it.

WTF0ver · 22/08/2021 12:07

The ending of the film Ah Ma Souer (Fat Girl), absolutely shocking and came out of nowhere. It wasn't a very pleasant film all in though, I started watching it randomly one night when I still lived with my parents.

Quick99 · 22/08/2021 12:27

Just read the synopsis for that @WTF0ver and wow did not expect that?!

floridana · 22/08/2021 12:44

@JedEye I am exactly the same. I admit I am sensitive and have always had low tolerance for scenes with violence, drugs and such things, but I think nowadays most shows are written to shock and disgust as much as possible. I can't watch a lot of the series everyone seems to talk about because I find them too dark. There are very few feel good or light hearted shows at the moment, everything has to be hard hitting and deal with difficult themes. Some things I watched years ago have stayed with me and can ruin my day if I think about them. Ive accepted I just have to not watch.
