I just watched the parachute death from Hollyoaks. I’ve never watched Hollyoaks, but oh my god, it was so haunting. I felt terrified.

I’m not sure I recommend anyone watching it! The only other times I’ve really been affected by tv was on This is England the tv series - the rape by the stepfather and then the crack orgy for the young girl with all the skanky men. Both made me feel really ill.

The only other tv that gets to me is Futurama at the end of Jurassic Bark - the dog WAITED 😭

Anything that you couldn’t watch again/haunted you?

@52andblue

On a similar theme I once saw most of a film on TV one afternoon about a child who was asked to keep a secret - the atmosphere was harrowing although almost nothing was shown. Plus I remember a film about a girl abuse victim who found her way to safety but didn't go there until she had handfuls of cash because she thought she had to buy her safety. it was a Uk drama - I wish I knew what it was called.

I wouldn't even attempt to watch most on this list.

The one with the abused girl is No Child of Mine. It's been mentioned up thread and is harrowing and a true story Sad

@Evenstar
Many years ago “The Woman in Black” was dramatised for television, there was a scene where the solicitor is lying in bed and a ball bounces across the room. He says “Nathaniel?” and she appears inches from his face screaming.
I remember seeing that one Christmas Eve, don't remember which year, and it frightened the life out of me, kept seeing her face when I was trying to sleep. I've never seen that version since and I think it was the scariest version of The Women in Black I've ever seen.

As a child (around 10/11) I was so upset by the scene in fried green tomatoes where the young man gets his show caught in the train tracks. It really affected me for weeks after and I've still never seen it again.

As an adult the film with Scarlet Johansson - under the skin. It's set in Scotland and the scene with the family on the beach with the dog and baby is just horrific.

@tattygirl I’ve never been able to finish Theatre of Blood…the stakes at the end…tried to watch it twice and have to turn it off

There’s a film called No Man’s Land about a Bosnian and a Serb and an unexploded landmine. I often think of the ending of that film, it was terribly sad and unresolved.

The ending of the Mist - just gut wrenching.

Rob Roy when Jessica Lange is washing herself in the loch

The two old folks lying down to die together in Titanic

Gottabesomethingbetterthanthis · 22/08/2021 00:48

Human Centipede - probably more psychos out there than we realise and god forbid they watch these sort of films and want to repeat what they see.

Makes me squirm when I think of how I crazily risked my safety when I was younger and careless.

HaveringWavering · 22/08/2021 00:49

“I love you Clarkey. Beeeeep.”

The episode of ER when Dr Rocket Romano gets his arm chopped off by the helicopter rotors.

@BikeRunSki

In one of the episodes of the first series of “Call the Midwife”, when the stories were still from Jennifer Worth’s memoirs, the voice of hit at the end said something like “Mrs Smith’s 9th pregnancy required in her first live baby, as she was able to have a c section on the new NHS”. That storyline was about a lady who had no difficulty in getting pregnant, but whose pelvis was deformed due to childhood polio, and all the previous babies had died in labour.

I watched that as I was feeding my 3 month old dd who’d been delivered by an emcs under GA on the NHS, after I’d haemorrhaged and her heart stopped. The surgeon told me afterwards that there had only a 50/50 chance that either of us would survive, and slimmer that we both would. That CTMW voiceover really resonated.

CTMW episode for me too… lots but specific one about the thalidomide babies and the doctors/delivery team left it out on a draining board near an open window. Was absolutely heart breaking
savagebaggagemaster · 22/08/2021 00:55

The whole of Henry Portrait of a Serial Killer (there is no earthly reason for this film to exist. Don't watch it. Sad)

Gottabesomethingbetterthanthis · 22/08/2021 00:56

@Floogal

Threads is horrible but when wind blows is more harrowing as they're a lovely old couple being left alone in a post apocalyptic world. Also it's set near where we live.( Great soundtrack though).

Definitely agree about this is England 86-90 with the rape and suicide references.

Also the abuse scenes in Sleepers.

The bullying of a learning disabled guy in dead man's shoes.

Precious is horrific. Her daydreams and celebrity cameos lighten it up very very slightly.

On Eastern promises. When the nurses uncle translates the dead girls' diary. And when the mob boss kicks his drunken son in the privates.

70s kid's show puppets- very disturbing.

70s puppets - yes! I was traumatised as a child by those two pigs, bloody Pinky and freaking Perky! Singing in that high pitched voice.. shudders!

@SnoopyLights

A scene from a programme called One Summer, which I think I was far too young to watch. Two teenage boys run away from home and end up somewhere in the countryside. I remember there's some kind of car accident and one of the boys is trapped and dies in a burning car. I had nightmares and can still remember them trying to get the door open and the panic as they realised he was trapped.

Bianca giving birth to their stillborn baby in Eastenders. I can remember at the time thinking that must be the worst thing anyone could ever have to do and it stayed with me. Sadly, years later, I had to do it myself and I hope I never have to do anything worse.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire - when Cedric's Dad shouts "That's my boy. MY BOY!" and it kills me ever time.

I loved One Summer when it was on TV. I managed to get a copy of it on DVD and rewatched it about 10 years ago. God it was bleak. Icky and Billy, Billy was played by David Morrisey.
texinthecity · 22/08/2021 01:06

When Cyril OReilly is executed in Oz

Oz is such a great, well acted series - there are actually lots of scenes they stayed with me.

NoProblem123 · 22/08/2021 01:15

@Kay1111 was it The Killing Fields ?
I remember the men loading up the bodies on a pickup and commenting on which women had the best figures.

One that’s stayed with me lately was a Stacey Dooley documentary where a little old lady in a hot country somewhere was the sole Carer for her adult son who had severe learning disabilities and medical needs. He spend all day on a cold floor in a back room.
They literally had nothing.
On the credits it put a message up saying she was hit by a car soon after filming and died.
I wonder what happened to her poor son Sad

midsomermurderess · 22/08/2021 01:16

As someone said upthread, the deep-fat-fryer scene in Spooks. It still randomly pops in to my head. The ending of a French film, La Vie rêvée des anges, it takes your breath away. And recently, the opening episode of Hit and Run.

Floogal · 22/08/2021 01:19

56Gottabesomethingbetterthanthis

Was thinking of Mr nosey bonk and the original bungle from Rainbow 😬😬😬😬😳😳

AmazinglyGraceless · 22/08/2021 01:22

The series Happy with Christopher Meloni.

It was weird but I was enjoying it - until a scene where he went back to a flat where there had been a mother and baby with an abusive dad. The mother was dead and the baby was in the (still going) microwave.

I didn't watch any more, totally unnecessary and really affected me.

smallgoon · 22/08/2021 01:23

French film called Martyrs. Horrible

TonyThreePies · 22/08/2021 01:26

@Puddingypops

The negan killing scene season 7 of the walking dead. It really disturbed me
Same. It was by chance the last of TWD that I actually saw, I'm not sure I could have watched any more after that anyway. And of course Carol telling Lizzie to look at the flowers. That whole storyline Shock
Iaccidentlykillplants · 22/08/2021 01:51

@LunaBunaTuna It sounds like The Vikings 1958 with Kirk Douglas

Almut Berg as the actress who has her hair pinned.

Dotoallasyouwouldbedoneby · 22/08/2021 02:02

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nil_by_Mouth_(film).
This film with Ray Winstone and Kathy Burke from 1997. I can't bear the fact she stayed with him, even though he caused her to miscarry through violence.

JedEye · 22/08/2021 02:05

I just can’t watch this stuff anymore. Scenes from things I watched long ago still stay with me years later.

I wonder about the mentality of the film makers and the need to shock. I need joy not harrowing misery from films and tv!

MsIreneWinters · 22/08/2021 02:12

A Miike Snow video called The Wave, which begins with a shot of several dead children. It was on in the hairdressers for some reason and still disturbs me now.

biwinoone · 22/08/2021 02:38

can I add a book instead? The whole of 'god of small things' is a depressing read which made my heart heavy and just brought me down so much.

Amortentia · 22/08/2021 03:42

@grapewine

Years ago I watched a two part miniseries called I Know my First Name is Steven. It was the true story of a seven year old boy abducted and held captive for 7 years. I was absolutely haunted by it, and over 30 years later still think about it.

And this. I've never forgotten it. It was based on true events, and I still get the rage when I think about it.

It ended tragically for Steven, and his family experienced even more awfulness through his brother Cory Staynor (I won't mention it here, but it was widely publicised and is easily found online).

Bloody hell, just had a look at Steven Stayner wik page and his brothers. Also, a tragic outcome for the other abducted boy.
CarbsAreNotMyFriend · 22/08/2021 03:50

Also came on to say the male rape in Hollyoaks. It must have been about 20 years ago but I can still picture Gary Lucy's face vividly. Horrific.
