Little girl handed over to US soldiers

Has anyone seen the video on the BBC website showing the little girl being handed over a wall to US soldiers at Kabul airport? She can only have been under 2 years old. I can't stop thinking about it. I wonder what on earth happened to her. I have a toddler myself and it's so upsetting (obvs upsetting regardless but the idea of feeling your only chance to save your child is to hand your baby over to a soldier is just terrifying).

Has anyone seen this or know any more if this story? Sadly I know it's just a tiny moment in a catastrophe full of horror stories.

I agree Mrs Terry I was responding specifically to that point re Biden and right now it's American citizens who he needs to get home

I am still taking in the enormity of what he's done with this horrific withdrawal and fuck up.

I think this will go down as one the worst turning points for the worse in history. And one of the many awful issues is the lack of communication between Biden and allies. He's pulled the rug out from under us all, weakening us all whilst simultaneously giving extremist groups a massive boost.

The whole world is a far far more than dangerous place.

Here you go Nina Ballerina. Still thinks it’s all a publicity stunt?

That's OK.
No phone call from her today, her sister is very worried.
The Government has pledged to evacuate 5,000 people but their scheme has not even opened yet, they are so slow to react to this and it seems pretty hopeless now.
There was just a small window of opportunity to help her but her phone battery is dead now, we can't contact her anymore, we feel so helpless.
The situation at the airport seems to have deteriated and there is crushing and panic looking at twitter, #Kabulairport. I think the UN should have sent troops and there should have been more thought and co-ordinated effort into the withdrawal, it looks like descending into chaos.

Agree with all of this.

Do we know why he has done the withdrawal this way? What was his official reasoning and what doe we suspect is the real reasoning?

IMHO don’t think it’s any more sinister/complex than the President went along with the basic withdrawal scheme/deal, as signed last year…(albeit with a slight delay on the original date)…that would be seen as a good thing by his voters…and I think it then suited him to belief those who told him the ANA would hold of the Taliban long enough those that needed to to get out of the country.

FUBAR.

^^ seems very casual and lassiez faire.. Weeks and weeks ago people were asking about a saigon.

Wouldn’t disagree…as others with expertise/knowledge in this area have commented elsewhere it takes a special sort of screw up to withdraw almost all your combat forces and then have to reinsert them PDQ because you have been completely blindsided by the opposition’s rate of progress.

There are apparent parallels with Saigon but if I remember it correctly the south Vietnamese Army (ARVN) held out for about two years after US ground combat forces had left South Vietnam so maybe Biden and others were hoping the ANA could do similar, not collapse in a matter of days.

TSSDNCOP · 21/08/2021 20:48

@notimagain I think you are overestimating Mr Biden's cognitive reasoning skills.

Those asking about the US withdrawal: it seems that the US withdrew from Bagram base overnight, and didn't tell the Afghans they were leaving. The Americans had the power switched off shortly after they left (whilst the afghans were sleeping, about 3am local time).

The Americans left behind about 3.5 million items, Gen Kohistani said, including tens of thousands of bottles of water, energy drinks and military ready-made meals, known as MREs. They also left behind thousands of civilian vehicles, without keys, and hundreds of armoured vehicles, the Associated Press reported.

They took heavy weapons with them and detonated some ammunition stocks, but left behind small weapons and ammunition for the Afghans, Gen Kohistani said.

Oh, and that image of the baby being handed over? Safely reunited with father, apparently. www.independent.co.uk/asia/south-asia/afghanistan-kabul-baby-airport-marines-b1906231.html

Wheretoeattweenandteen · 22/08/2021 12:02

Apparently they couldn't defend bagram and kabul so they chose kabul but again didn't bother to share info with us and allies

I suspect all these supplies have now found their way into the hands of the Taliban. Angry

blueberrywaffle · 22/08/2021 12:07

I seen on bbc news that the us marines confirmed the child was passed to her father

New York Times is reporting that a toddler has been trampled to death today.

WanderingFruitWonderer · 23/08/2021 02:21

This is all so beyond horrendous. I'm guessing I'm not the only one lying awake at the moment worrying about it?
Knowing there are people at Kabul airport this very second, running for their lives, and desperate for their children, is so devastating. I want to do more to help. I feel so helpless. Surely the world can get together and do something? We need to take in far more refugees than the proposed amount; and warmly welcome them into our communities, and love and nurture them.
Oh, good people of Afghanistan, I'm so sorry that the western world has done this to you. So very sorry Sad

That article is heartbreaking. Sad I 100% agree with WanderingFruitWanderer that we need to welcome as many refugees as possible. The MOD housing that I used to live in, mostly sat empty. I’d estimate half of the houses had no one living there. 2-3 bedroom houses.

Soubriquet · 23/08/2021 07:22

I can’t read that link as it’s paywalled but that is heart breaking if true

It’s nice to see so many people on here actually wanting to help when I see shit like this on fb and people actually agreeing. It makes me furious and they are actually saying that it’s a very good point. How?! They are no way comparable

Doodlebug71 · 23/08/2021 12:11

@boogiewithasuitcase: Yes, reports would sugggest that the Taliban were waiting around and when the power went off (about 20 minutes after the Americans left), they knew they could help themselves. The "looters" in the article I've read thus far would appear to be The Taliban. The equipment they using and driving around in certainly indicates they stole whatever they could get their mitts on.

It turns out that Embassy staff arrived to work and experienced similar: doors locked, and when they emailed colleagues to check what was going on, the emails bounced. Completely shafted. So many of those poor souls at the Airport have ID and invitations to present for flights, yet the invitation is just to join that awful crowd. Bilal Sawary (I think ) has a video clip of a young woman n his twitter feed: the Americans directed her to present at the airport, so she is (or was) in that crowd, trying to get through. As are so many others.

@Soubriquet and others. I see shit like that, too. Worse, when I'm out walking, some of the people whose conversations I overhear (because they talk at the top of their bloody voices) are expressing some vile and incredibly unkind views. "Make them stay and fight." and that sort of nonsense. "We don't want more of these bloody forriners... they could be terrorists". (People fleeing terrorists are suspected of being terrorists? How does that work, except for the truly ignorant?) I'm not sure how ordinary people are supposed to fight extremists with guns.

My dad grew up with refugees from the Kinder transports and others, so I knew lots of them when I was a little girl. They faced the same nastiness and xenophobia that refugees tend to face now. I remember reading Judith Kerr's biography, and dad's friends told me about their experiences. I just wan tto help, so am off to find ways.

boogiewithasuitcase · 23/08/2021 21:39

Doodlebug thank you. This is all worse than I realised.

WanderingFruitWonderer · 23/08/2021 21:48

Yes @Doodlebug71, I overheard someone (a stranger in passing, as I was walking along the seafront) today saying the kind of things you mention. It's unbearably painful to listen to isn't it. That level of ignorance and cruelty. Hopefully they're minority views, and more people are compassionate?
I hope those poor souls stuck in Kabul airport know that many of us are heartbroken for them, and very sorry and ashamed. I honestly can't believe the world has allowed this to happen Sad
Let me know if you can think of a way to help. I desperately want to, but feel so helpless. Don't know what to do?

Wheretoeattweenandteen · 23/08/2021 22:10

Well, I'm totally behind taking refugees, I think it's horrific what's happening and pm angry but unfortunately the fact is it's already been reported that actually people's who want to kill us have already tried to break through and get on planes.

People with a no right to fly on our danger list.

Obviously.. It looks like they are heavily vetting people they are even scanning small Children.

The two arnt mutually exclusive...

@Wheretoeattweenandteen: that report about he person on a nofly list: one person got through, and on closer investigation, the links they were suspected of having don't exist.

Refugees are going to face enough struggles wherever they are sent to settle, without that sort of chinese whispers and rumour flying around.

@WanderingFruitWonderer: I've just had a look at my twitter feed, and Brian Chesky (Co-founder and CEO of AirBNB) is reaching out to ask for people to host refugee families. Linky here: twitter.com/bchesky/status/1430067315228352512

FWIW the French took 5 refugees into custody (actually hotel room arrest) on arrival here yesterday..seems they rang bells somewhere when they set foot on French soil.

Not sure if their situation has been resolved yet or not.

Oh well, it's all over for the poor people now, i can't fathom why Biden did this in this way and who it benefits.

He's also totally side swiped Europe.

I'm not sure what on earth we can do after the pull out.
I guess keep espousing and being proud of our Western values, born of much bloodshed over the centuries which at least try and value each life offering liberty to all, all born free and equal.

Bythemillpond · 25/08/2021 09:05

I’m not sure what on earth we can do after the pull out

I think there is going to be safe passage put in place if people want to leave and can get themselves to the boarders.
Not an easy journey but one which if they can make it they will at least know they can cross when they get there.

I think there will be so many that eventually they are going to have to divide the numbers up between other countries.

I wonder what type of people choose to stay?
