Little girl handed over to US soldiers

JardinVibe · 20/08/2021 14:22

Has anyone seen the video on the BBC website showing the little girl being handed over a wall to US soldiers at Kabul airport? She can only have been under 2 years old. I can't stop thinking about it. I wonder what on earth happened to her. I have a toddler myself and it's so upsetting (obvs upsetting regardless but the idea of feeling your only chance to save your child is to hand your baby over to a soldier is just terrifying).

Has anyone seen this or know any more if this story? Sadly I know it's just a tiny moment in a catastrophe full of horror stories.

I would pass my daughter over the fence knowing the other choice was to have the Taliban stripping her freedoms away

The ex army mp was on the radio saying that even the Afghan army didn’t know the US were leaving Basra airport till two hours after!

I hope he actually said Bagram, not Basra, but yes the US Forces pretty much pulled out of there in the early hours of the AM without any warning.

As to the issue of why people didn’t flee earlier? Families, kids, homes, careers, and maybe wishful thinking …all the things and considerations we hear about routinely in this place in the context of other countries…

There were routine flights out of Kabul up until a week or to, it might have been possible but dangerous to drive out to other countries in the region but WTH would you be going to ultimately and what Visa would you be using? Chances are you’d be turned back at the border, possibly even now that might happen if you tried to enter many countries in the region…

I have nothing against you personally but I hate a world that has created people that think like you. Is there any other atrocities that you are in denial of?
wewereliars · 20/08/2021 17:37

We have always acted in our own self interest, we are not the good guys and never have been.

Even the much lauded kindertransport was a private effort, nothing to do with the government of the day.

The ex army mp was on the radio saying that even the Afghan army didn’t know the US were leaving Basra airport till two hours after! By which time it was taken and looted. The Afghans had no hope! And I don’t blame them for never imaging the U.S and U.K. would pull out in this absolutely disastrous chaotic way!
I'd read that report, and was trying to find it, so thanks for sharing. The poor sods apparently woke up and the Americans had buggered off, and taken the contractors who maintain all the equipment. Taliban pelted in, took everything, and the Taliban are now armed to the teeth with all the equipment they stole..

I don't think any Afghans expected the West to stay forever, but they didn't expect to be abandoned overnight, either. I'd been reading on Twitter (I think) that Afghan embassy staff were abandoned by European staff at the Embassies. Given that the UK Embassy has told security guards that they don't qualify for help because they weren't directly employed by the UK, it doesn't surprise me. Such shitty behaviour. I don't care if it's standard procedure, it's still shitty.

It's a humanitarian catastrophe out there, and it's all down to the West. I'm really disgusted with Biden. He had a choice, and has left millions with no choice and no fucking hope.

StarttoFinish · 20/08/2021 17:41

We have a government that was elected on the back of making the UK a hostile environment for foreigners in need and cutting aid budgets. Why would they do anything to help? Their electorate has made it clear they don't want them to.

itsgettingwierd · 20/08/2021 17:43

I've read lots of reports of how soldiers are really struggling with the metal load because they just cannot process everyone who wants to leave due to the rules.

I hope they get proper care when they return home from this. The scenes must be devastatingly heartbreaking in real life.

I read that. You posted that, and you have the gall to complain it was deleted? The removal of your post is nothing to do with me. I wanted to leave that there as a shining example of the absolute lack of empathy and understanding facing those poor sods in Afghanistan.
SwimmingUnderwater · 20/08/2021 17:45

The situation out there is utterly horrifying. To be a woman or anyone who helped the West in any way just means you are the walking dead. Absolutely terrifying.

Xoxoxoxoxoxox · 20/08/2021 17:46

My friend's sister is there and is outside the airport, she was evicted from her house by the Taliban a few days ago, her husband was killed in a bomb and she has 4 children, they are sleeping rough in an enourmous crowd of people, and are relying on handouts for food and water.
She's just one of thousands, I think this is heading for a humanitarian disaster, even if no shots are fired.
There's very little water, all the banks are shut and people there are cash based, there are thousands of displaced people living on the streets.

Correction: a small percentage of the UK electorate has made it clear they are ignorant, xenophobic and mean-spirited, as well as gullible. There are millions of others who are not. I'm one of them.

@catgirl1976

It all makes me think of the poem Home

no one leaves home unless
home is the mouth of a shark.

you only run for the border
when you see the whole city
running as well.

your neighbours running faster
than you, the boy you went to school with
who kissed you dizzy behind
the old tin factory is
holding a gun bigger than his body,

you only leave home
when home won't let you stay.
no one would leave home unless home
chased you, fire under feet,
hot blood in your belly.

it's not something you ever thought about
doing, and so when you did -
you carried the anthem under your breath,
waiting until the airport toilet
to tear up the passport and swallow,
each mouthful of paper making it clear that
you would not be going back.

you have to understand,
no one puts their children in a boat
unless the water is safer than the land.

who would choose to spend days
and nights in the stomach of a truck
unless the miles travelled
meant something more than journey.

no one would choose to crawl under fences,
be beaten until your shadow leaves you,
raped, then drowned, forced to the bottom of
the boat because you are darker, be sold,
starved, shot at the border like a sick animal,
be pitied, lose your name, lose your family,
make a refugee camp a home for a year or two or ten,
stripped and searched, find prison everywhere
and if you survive and you are greeted on the other side
with go home blacks, refugees
dirty immigrants, asylum seekers
sucking our country dry of milk,
dark, with their hands out
smell strange, savage -
look what they've done to their own countries,
what will they do to ours?

the dirty looks in the street
softer than a limb torn off,
the indignity of everyday life
more tender than fourteen men who
look like your father, between
your legs, insults easier to swallow
than rubble, than your child's body
in pieces - for now, forget about pride
your survival is more important.

i want to go home, but home is the mouth of a shark
home is the barrel of the gun

and no one would leave home
unless home chased you to the shore
unless home tells you to
leave what you could not behind,
even if it was human.

no one leaves home until home
is a damp voice in your ear saying
leave, run now, i don't know what
i've become.

So powerful. I read The Beekeeper of Aleppo recently. Heartbreaking.

Umm. It's the ones that gave the current government their mandate.

Akire · 20/08/2021 17:56

It’s awful, at some point hours or days the last plane will leave and then what. If they don’t shot everyone who is left they still be then behind closed doors of the world to do what they like.
The wheels turn so slowly in situations like this now Qatar is it saying we don’t want any more planes and they can’t fly out even though ready to go. So sky news just said. Surely countries have enough authority to say we will removing anyone you take in next few weeks they will not be your problem for long. Only those on a promise of a country can even get on the plane. I hope they see sense and save who they can

Wheretoeattweenandteen · 20/08/2021 17:59

They like evry one else probably assumed their army would protect them?
Maybe some were not aware of what would happen they have mostly lived peacefully for twenty years.
Now the full sheer horror of brutal animals stalking their streets is sinking in they want out.

Since April the US has been asked to process visa for the aghagn helpers.
Those lists never materialised and many of their passports were actually burned in the US embassy.

NinaBallerinaShoes · 20/08/2021 18:06

@Doodlebug71 @Bashfull900 - according to Sky news and the Independent, the child was apparently reunited with its parents - as other pp have pointed out.

Your point of view is abhorrent. I can’t believe you have the audacity to complain it removed.
wewereliars · 20/08/2021 18:08

I don' think bad language is worse than a complete lack of empathy towards people in a desperate and terifying situation.

But maybe that's just me

Dontwatchfootball · 20/08/2021 18:10

This just makes me sob whenever I see it. Can you imagine the terror of those children. And the desperation of those parents. I just cant stand this, it is breaking my heart.

StarttoFinish · 20/08/2021 18:10

I agree the POV was abhorrent, but I don't think that's a reason to delete it. It's not an uncommonly held view, it needs to be challenged, not banned.

TSSDNCOP · 20/08/2021 18:13

We have the President of the USA on the news unable to recall advice he was given by his own joint chiefs, what the fuck hope did the normal Afghan have of getting out in time?

The Taliban, people with no possessions and a belly full of hatred have just had to sit tight in Pakistan for 20 years. These people can wait a fucking long time, because they have all the time in the world. The US President seriously underestimated them.

And now, like a fire that's been locked in a room, the door is open and the oxygen is in.

Pretty soon all those people at the fence that have helped the US and UK are going to be faced with no more planes and when they inevitably have to turn back round, guess who will be waiting armed to the teeth.

SimonaLynn · 20/08/2021 18:20

It is just the saddest thing - what an utterly unthinkable and awful. My heart breaks for them.
