Little girl handed over to US soldiers

Has anyone seen the video on the BBC website showing the little girl being handed over a wall to US soldiers at Kabul airport? She can only have been under 2 years old. I can't stop thinking about it. I wonder what on earth happened to her. I have a toddler myself and it's so upsetting (obvs upsetting regardless but the idea of feeling your only chance to save your child is to hand your baby over to a soldier is just terrifying).

Has anyone seen this or know any more if this story? Sadly I know it's just a tiny moment in a catastrophe full of horror stories.

@Wheretoeattweenandteen

Aside from the the obvious sanitation issues I'm just thinking of covid, being issued through body waste.

It's a covid disaster too.

No. Covid will be the very least of their worries. Covid is a luxury 1st world worry to them right now
Wheretoeattweenandteen · 21/08/2021 00:51

Um.. Yes... If someone is standing there with the taliban over the them yes they are not going to be worried about covid.

I'm not sure what your getting out.

I'm merely also remembering that we are in a pandemic and I hope someone somewhere has realised that somewhere there needs to be a proper medical facility set up because some who do get through this mess might end up fighting covid Hmm

HmmmmmmInteresting · 21/08/2021 00:52

@rooarsome

I've also seen a video of a baby, probably about 1, being passed over the crowd towards the fence. It's utterly heartbreaking
I saw that one. It was distressing how the soldiers were handling her, like she was a chicken or something.
Wheretoeattweenandteen · 21/08/2021 00:52

Oh the brink.

Yes. It will be a covid disaster actually if many people end up dying of covid and we have scenes worst then India.

Unfortunately what we are witnessing is a seismic continental shift of power from west to east.

Every organisation in the west has been shown to be totally impotent.

Wheretoeattweenandteen · 21/08/2021 00:55

Hmmmmm

I noticed that too.. Sort of grabbing the baby in a strange way although obviously working at difficult angles to help.

Maybe they were as shocked as you would be to be handed a tiny baby and forced to make the decision as to how to proceed from there.
BettyAndFrank · 21/08/2021 01:01

These people are desperate…they have been failed by us and everyone 😥

HHSchultz · 21/08/2021 06:39

OntheBrink, do you really think I don't know that. This is a Humanitarian crisis and it needs boots on the ground.

HHSchultz · 21/08/2021 06:40

Oops, sorry for the Bold.

GreenTortoise · 21/08/2021 07:35

It's just so sad. We will do anything to protect our children. Well, most anyway.

They just want their child to be safe. They don't hand them over with no thought in the world. Their hearts would be breaking.

KaptainKaveman · 21/08/2021 08:03

@NinaBallerinaShoes

The comment was a point of view. Is this no longer allowed?
No, it wasn't really a 'point of view', more an expression of contempt and denial of the hard facts on the ground.

HTH

KaptainKaveman · 21/08/2021 08:05

@BestZebbie

Were they handing all the children straight back? I thought I read that they just weren't transporting unaccompanied children so they'd take a parent/family too - if so, there is a huge incentive to throw a child over the wire if it also buys an adult a way out.
Is that you Katie?Hmm

Every organisation in the west has been shown to be totally impotent.

Not organisations but 'western leadership - there is none, even the EU, often criticised for its slow responses, told the yanks that Kabul will fall very quickly if you pull out on the timetable you have.

A ex RM "Pen" Farthing, who runs an animal charity, is still in Kabul, just had an email from the British Embassy "Please make your way to the Airport, for your repatriation flight" yeah like how do i get there !!!???

He wont leave without his 71 staff in children - he said that the US had the biggest airbase in the world Bagram but closed it down, leaving the evacuation flights to use a small commercial airport.

You could hear the stress in his voice.

What on earth have we gone and done?
People like Biden Johnson need to be held accountable for this unfolding humanitarian disaster.

HarrisMcCoo · 21/08/2021 10:04

Greece isn't messing around. That's the 25 mile wall up with the border to Turkey.

Wheretoeattweenandteen · 21/08/2021 10:34

It seems Biden doesn't care to work with anyone, his pulling out surprised us as well?

I don't think there is any special relationship between UK and US anymore, I don't think Biden cares much for us.
He's coming across to me as a man of absolute steel.

Wheretoeattweenandteen · 21/08/2021 10:36

He said he can get Americans out but then said he's not sure.

Apparently helicopters are going into kabul to retrieve Americans from an hotel.

What on earth happens next!

SwimmingUnderwater · 21/08/2021 10:50

Biden's constant talk about 'American lives' is sickening. What about the lives of those poor Afghan people? It's as if there is a scale of worth , and Americans are at the top. I understand he needs to think of the population he represents, but I can't imagine Johnson or any other PM talking about 'British lives' as if they are something very special and more important that anyone else.

Wheretoeattweenandteen · 21/08/2021 10:55

Well to be fair to Biden it is American lives he's responsible for first and foremost.

That's every governments first role, to the people who put them there and who they represent!

Wheretoeattweenandteen · 21/08/2021 10:56

The baby had medical treatment and was reunited with dad.

Lillypup · 21/08/2021 11:04

Gosh! Why was my comment deleted? I was expressing a point of view. Beware of fake news. I didn’t call anyone a cunt unlike some.
If it looks like a cunt and talks like a cunt...........

Why wouldn't they?

Greece knows they'll be left with huge numbers in camps as europe refuses to share the burden.

Doodlebug71 · 21/08/2021 17:22

@Xoxoxoxoxoxox: I am so, so sorry. I just found out that Clarissa Ward and her team were evacuated yesterday, and they're in Doha. I've been without internet connection since last evening, so didn't know. I hope your friend's sister can find a way out of that insanity.

MrsTerryPratchett · 21/08/2021 17:29

Well yes, but you can still acknowledge and care about others.

It's like 'God Blass America' that they spout constantly. Really? I wouldn't believe in a God that chose to bless people based on nationality. Utterly unfathomable concept. They are a people very focused on themselves.
