How many pairs of shoes do you have, and do you recycle them?

I have 22.

15 are pairs of trainers - I take part in several sports, and have several pairs of trainers for each sport.

This is because I need different pairs for different conditions, so say 2 sports, with 3 pairs of trainers for each - one basic, one competition standard and one for particularly difficult conditions.

Thats 6 pairs of active trainers

And I have another 9 pairs that are too worn out for the sport, but not to worn out for day-to-day wear - some of which I coud possibly recycle if I found a way of recylcing them

Plus work shoes,(2 pairs)
plus boots for heavy rain, ( 2 pairs)
plus sandals, ( 1 pair)
plus shoes for special occasions ( ( 2 pairs)

This seems like an awful lot of shoes to me.

How does this compare to others?

@DDIJ

I have 1 pair.

There are lots of shoe recycling bins around so you could pop your old shoes in them.

no, I can't find a bin that will take old shoes and recycle the material. Plenty that will take wearable shoes and donate them, but my old trainers are not really in a fit state to pass on as wearable

Gosh, one pair only. I guess you don't do any sports?

@DDIJ

I should have said I don't think 22 is excessive at all.
o good, thank you!

5 pairs of heels that I very rarely wear but love.
Shoes I wear:
One pair boots
One pair trainers
One pair espadriles sp? :)
One pair work shoes. I replace once worn and recycle charity shop for old ones straight away.
One pair flip flops

Where do you keep 22 pairs of shoes?!

Boatonthehorizon · 15/08/2021 22:25

People can do sport without vast amounts of shoes. I know an older man who runs marathons in £3 plimsolls. Hes quite rich but stubborn!

Blessex · 15/08/2021 22:25

@DDIJ do you include boots in that one pair? Do you wear the same pair of shoes summer and winter?

lannistunut · 15/08/2021 22:26

I have about half a dozen pairs, I take them to a shoe recycling bank.

vampirethriller · 15/08/2021 22:26

Three. Boots, flip flops and some sandals. The boots and sandals were second hand anyway so I count that as recycling.

shakeitoffshakeacocktail · 15/08/2021 22:27

22 is fine

I have about 10 in boxes that I very rarely wear but still need to go with certain style dresses,

Downstairs in rotation

2 flat black shoes
1 sandals
1 flip flops
1 running trainers
1 any sport trainers
1 trail walking shoes
3 nice black ankle boots
1 below knee brown boots
3 brown ankle boots
2 canvas slip on shoes
2 garden shoes
1 wellies

I wear most of these fairly frequently
I generally go through 1 pair of canvas shoes and 1 pair of trainers a year most of the rest I've had for 5 years plus

megletthesecond · 15/08/2021 22:31

4 pairs of casual Nikes. (I walk almost everywhere).
2 pairs of running trainers (trail and flat).
1 indoor gym trainers.
Plus havianas and birkenstocks for summer.
Winter boots for proper cold weather.
Wellies.

Cheeseycheeseycheesecheese · 15/08/2021 22:32

20 odd

2x lifting trainers
1x running trainers
3x every day plimsol types
2x flipflop sandals
2x heeled sandals
4x going out heels
4x sensible flats
2x work heels
5x boots

All in various colours and all get worn throughout the year. I tend to wear shoes to death and then chuck them in the mixed textile bin at the local recycling facility as they're too trashed to be upcycled.

Boatonthehorizon · 15/08/2021 22:34

Blessex Ah the assumptions of the MC!
If you buy cheaper shoes, like I do, they dont last long so as the season changes you throw them out and buy different shoes. I wont wear last winters boots come sept as theyre wreaked. New boots in oct.

Theres a fable about it somewhere. The poorer man spends more on shoes or something...initial capital against ?

10 boots
1 slippers
1walking boots
1 wellies

WaitinginVain · 15/08/2021 22:40

I have so many shoes I wouldn't know where to start Blush.
When you have so many they rarely wear out though and I keep them so long they go out of fashion and come back again Smile,

54321nought · 15/08/2021 22:42

Cheap shoes are a false economy, I agree.

And having more shoes and rotating them doesn't cost more than having fewer shoes and wearing them every day

In fact, rotating shoes can work out cheaper, especially if you buy them in special offers, etc.

But I do feel that my 22 is quite a lot! I certainly could get rid of some of the worn out trainers, if I could find a way to recycle, rather than sending them to landfill.

However, I am reassured that others don't think 22 is excessive, and have similar numbers themselves!

Baycitystroller · 15/08/2021 22:42

At least 50 pairs. This includes boots, trainers and sandals. I have a thing about shoes tbh. Some pairs I’ve had for years though. They seldom wear out as I rotate them.

lannistunut · 15/08/2021 22:47

It is just a collection point in my town for any shoes.

Here is an example of the type of collection: www.variety.org.uk/how-you-can-help/recycle All shoes, in any conditions are accepted at 7,000 Variety shoe recycling banks throughout the UK. Most are located in car parks in front of shopping centres and supermarkets.
Please call 08000 902 321 to find out where your closest shoe bank is located. All shoes, in any condition are accepted.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 15/08/2021 22:47

3 trainers
2 pumps
At least 10 pairs of sandals Blush
4 smart shoes
4 boots

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 15/08/2021 22:48

**and yes I do charity shop them or put them in the shoe bank when I'm done with them.
