How many pairs of shoes do you have, and do you recycle them?

I have 22.

15 are pairs of trainers - I take part in several sports, and have several pairs of trainers for each sport.

This is because I need different pairs for different conditions, so say 2 sports, with 3 pairs of trainers for each - one basic, one competition standard and one for particularly difficult conditions.

Thats 6 pairs of active trainers

And I have another 9 pairs that are too worn out for the sport, but not to worn out for day-to-day wear - some of which I coud possibly recycle if I found a way of recylcing them

Plus work shoes,(2 pairs)
plus boots for heavy rain, ( 2 pairs)
plus sandals, ( 1 pair)
plus shoes for special occasions ( ( 2 pairs)

This seems like an awful lot of shoes to me.

How does this compare to others?

@lannistunut

It is just a collection point in my town for any shoes.

Here is an example of the type of collection: www.variety.org.uk/how-you-can-help/recycle All shoes, in any conditions are accepted at 7,000 Variety shoe recycling banks throughout the UK. Most are located in car parks in front of shopping centres and supermarkets.
Please call 08000 902 321 to find out where your closest shoe bank is located. All shoes, in any condition are accepted.

That looks great, thank you! I will give them a ring tomorrow

At least 100, never recycle but do throw away occasionally.

A pair of trainers, a pair of heels, water sandals, wellies and slippers. And an ancient pair of trainers for gardening. Replaced only when they are worn out, so I’ve not really considered doing anything with them except binning them. Shoes are of little interest to me and my feet are a difficult shape so I buy as seldom as possible.

About 20, including boots, but I’m difficult to buy for so can’t have many. I throw them away or take them to a charity shop.

Ninkanink · 15/08/2021 23:03

I used to have something like 75 - 80 pairs. Now I have about 30.

Frazzled2207 · 15/08/2021 23:07

There are shoe recycling banks all over the place here. Though I have to admit I’m not entirely sure that the shoes are all actually recycled the wording on them seem to be a bit vague

But why would anyone throw in landfill when there is a “shoe recycling” bin next door?

Anyway OP I don’t think 20 pairs in total is excessive. I Have similar but slightly less trainers and lots of sandals!

PickAChew · 15/08/2021 23:09

5 pairs of boots.

6 pairs of trainers.

2 pairs of crocs for around the house.

A pair of sandals that come out once a year.

I wear stuff until it's dead. Bought my crocs when my 15yo was a baby - they changed the shape so new ones don't fit me - quite a few have gone to the charity shop. In fact a lot of footwear that I end up not getting on with goes to the charity shop or gers passed onto my mum, who is same size, different foot shape. I have duck feet so end up with quite a few duds.

The good ones wear down to nothing or walk their way into the wheel bin by themselves.

In face

80sMum · 15/08/2021 23:16

I think I have between 20 and 25. It's surprising how they all add up. I didn't realise that I had so many.

PickAChew · 15/08/2021 23:17

Agree about taking advantage of special offers. I bought some Nike react escape for walking around town in, earlier in the summer - running trainers but quite a smart design, work with my wide feet, fallen arches, crap knees and our hilly city. A few other colours were half price in the Next sale, so I bought another pair.

PickAChew · 15/08/2021 23:18

No idea where "in face" came from

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 15/08/2021 23:28

2 pairs of comfortable "healthy" shoes in red and violet and one pair of black sandals - I will probably buy a pair of shoes / boots for wet and cold weather in the autumn.

Shoes I get rid of are usually no longer fit for their purpose and go into recycling.

SunSeaSurfGin · 15/08/2021 23:34

I have about 35 pairs
Don't really throw any away because they all have their own occasions and uses they don't get in a bad condition. Or if they do they get used in the garden or something

Only shoes I get through are flip flops

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 15/08/2021 23:51

About ten pairs of trainers which are my main footwear - Nike, Veja, Adidas.

Two pairs of DM monkey boots, one oxblood and one black

One pair of chunky black Chelsea boots

One pair of flatform brogues

Flip-flops, Birkenstock Boston clogs, and Ugg boots for in the house, depending on the time of year.

I have very wide, small feet, so tend to wear things out because I struggle to find comfy shoes. I bin them at that point.

Blessex · 16/08/2021 00:21

Gosh I dare not count. But I don’t need to throw them away every season. They all have their outfits. Different outfits require different shoes no?

Blessex · 16/08/2021 00:22

@Boatonthehorizon I have boots that last 20 years

WineGetsMeThroughIt · 16/08/2021 00:36

I cannot understand how someone could get through Norma day to day life with 1 pair of shoes!?! Must be a very boring and unsocial life? How do you wear 1 pair through all 4 seasons?

I haven't counted my shoes recently. But I would guess it's at least 85 pairs. Probably 2/3 of them are heels. They each have their own occasion and use. But I do wear many of my shoes quite often, and rotate between 10-12 quite regularly at the moment. If I get rid of them I normally just donate to charity shops. But I've also sold 2 pairs this month on Vinted

ErinAoife · 16/08/2021 00:54

Shoes are my downfall especially high heels, I have at least 20 pairs that I own I discard a pair each time I buy a new one. I am a high heel addict I am afraid.

HardStareBear · 16/08/2021 05:25

I have many, many pairs of shoes, boots and sandals. However, some of them are older than my teenager. When my dad died some of his shoes were older than me, so clearly we have the same attitude to shoe buying!
