If you have a daughter aged 8 or nearly 9, what is she like/what does she do/what sort of things is she in to?

Phineyj · 15/08/2021 07:58

Why do you want to know?

Paddingtonthebear · 15/08/2021 08:21

Because I have one and I wondered if she is similar to others 😆

Operation Ouch, Horrible Histories, Pokemon, Wizards of Once and more Pokemon

Magicstars · 15/08/2021 08:28

Toys with enormous watery eyes! watching tv, playing with friends, going to the park, brownies, swimming, loom bands, skating, reading…
She’d like to have more time on her tablet talking to friends & gaming.

TheChild · 15/08/2021 08:34

Mine is a natural coach potato (just like me!) who would like to spend most of her time playing on her tablet or PlayStation or watching the ipad. She likes to draw, write stories and still is very much in to imaginative play which she does a lot with her younger sister. And she is not so much a fan of physical activity (again, she gets that from me!) and still can't ride a bike without stabilisers, hates evem trying to learn.
Despite having a lot of books, she isn't massively fussed about independent reading like I was at her age.

Noshowwithoutpunch · 15/08/2021 08:39

Likes playing with her friends making videos on her tablet.
Loves photography.
Loves swimming.
Loves bike rides.
Reads in bed. Wimpy kid or Jacqueline Wilson usually.
Will occasionally bake with me.
Not into computer games.
Loves rearranging her bedroom and desperate for Led lighting.

Phineyj · 15/08/2021 08:46

OK, it could have been that you were an auntie looking for ideas to entertain a child of that age.

My DD is very physically energetic: she likes swimming, the climbing wall, scooting, cycling, archery, football, basketball and she's just got some new skates. Thank goodness Decathlon just opened in our town.

The rest of the time it's Roblox, Minecraft and Among Us, word games and fidgets plus chain watching CBBC shows on iplayer (currently Still So Awkward which mostly goes over her head, but I'm finding it very funny).

Her favourite activity of all is playing with the slightly younger kids next door.

Paddingtonthebear · 15/08/2021 08:48

Thank you, lots of interest similarities here.

Mine has a tablet but doesn’t have Roblox or access to YouTube. Is that strict for this age group?

Ledkr · 15/08/2021 08:50

Friends drawing a lot, Roblox, loom bands, animals, going out to places and charging about like a demon.
Very sweet and loving but can be a little nervous and shy.

Ledkr · 15/08/2021 08:51

I allow you tube and Roblox but only downstairs so I can monitor

Ninjawannabee · 15/08/2021 08:51

Mine is into reading, reading, and books.
Also fantasy, dragons, magic amulets, and loves animals, especially cute ones like owls and llamas.

She's a bit lazy but can get energised when she comes up with her own ideas, eg to write a series of books about her cat. She'll go with it for two weeks then drop and move onto the next obsession.

She loves her friends but tbh loves her teachers even more!

melonhead · 15/08/2021 09:05

Mine loves drawing, dancing, swimming, anything Japanese or Korean, tie dye, doing anime drawing and make up, making clothes for her American Girl doll. She's awesome!!

qualitygirl · 15/08/2021 09:10

She's likes to swim, surf, kayak, paddle board and cycle.
She loves the ocean and the beach.
She likes team sports and plays football on a Saturday morning.
She loves to watch nature programmes, operation ouch, Mia and me and Harry Potter
She adores arts and crafts, she does pottery classes too.
She plays out in the garden with her brother (when they are not killing each other 🙈)
She hates reading but loves crosswords and word searches. She lives for her National Geographic issue each month

LBOCS2 · 15/08/2021 09:16

Mine is into playing roblox with her friends online, watching YouTube and FaceTiming her best friend so they can chat for hours. She's just started to be interested in reading, but mostly listens to audio books on Alexa for fiction and reads non fiction herself - she's been through a Tudors phase and is now quite into ancient Greeks. Horrible histories has supported that a lot. She loves musicals and singing, and often has bedroom discos with her little sister - they have LED lights linked up to alexa so it's actually like a real disco!

Physically she has absolutely no interest in riding a bike, but prefers going out on her Heelies and for her birthday has asked for some roller skates. She's fascinated by the natural world - apparently they play at being archaeologists at school - and on a recent holiday to Devon her favourite part was fossil hunting. She and her sister also still play playmobil together a lot, and love making clothes for their barbies out of socks and scraps of material.

qualitygirl · 15/08/2021 09:29

Oh and she loves cooking and baking.
She adores Asian food

Blueeyedgirl21 · 15/08/2021 09:34

Brownies, roblox, baking, watching Norris nuts and Tiana on YouTube (irritating), watching Netflix series about animals (spirit etc), gymnastics around 5 hrs a week plus a 1 hr tennis fun class weekly. She is really good at gymnastics, but won’t be an Olympian 😂 spends a lot of time doing backflips outside in the garden and asking me to film her. She is tiny and doesn’t eat much and is fussy. Likes a trip to H&M to clothes shop but bored after 20 mins. Likes colouring a lot too.

Blueeyedgirl21 · 15/08/2021 09:35

Oh also reads a lot - Harry Potter and wimpy kid and random animal stories mostly.

InterstellarDrifter · 15/08/2021 09:40

loves animals especially cats and horses
Enjoys, swimming, cycling, walking, exploring, being outside, baking, tv, minecraft, coding and reading.

ChittyChittyBoomBoom · 15/08/2021 09:44

Mine is a bit of a screen addict so roblox, minecraft and Harry Potter. She also loves listening to her Harry Potter audiobook (on her Eco) whilst colouring in her bedroom. She loves craft in general and also reading books (Harry Potter of any animal based story). She still loves going to the park and is very active…running, climbing and general bombing around. Roller skating and swimming are favourites too, She doesn’t really play with toys anymore (which makes me sad) but will play Lego with her brother occasionally. She’s very sociable, loves her friends and will makes friends wherever she goes.

ChittyChittyBoomBoom · 15/08/2021 09:44

Oh and she goes to Cubs and plays in a girls football team.

ComeonJulia · 15/08/2021 09:47

Mine loves Lego, craft & sewing. Always making something. She also loves cooking.

Very sporty; does dancing 3 times and a week and gymnastics and runs.

bizboz · 15/08/2021 09:50

Very dramatic. Loves role play still, especially with LOL dolls and teddies and makes pretend YouTube videos with them. Loves drama and singing/dancing - is always making up pretend shows. Watches a lot of YouTube (Norris Nuts) or Disney plus (Bizaardvark)/Netflix - likes the Investigators.

However, I have another DD and when she was 8 she was quite different. Liked to be outdoors on the trampoline. She played with toys but would prefer drawing or writing in a notebook. She liked unboxing videos on YouTube and watched a lot of Spirit on Netflix. A lot will depend on personality.

Logoplanter · 15/08/2021 09:57

Mine likes gymnastics, playing cricket and football with her brother and just generally spending time with him. She enjoys watching Netflix and kids YouTube, watching films, helping me bake (well tasting all the food), going swimming and for walks, playing with her teddies and making videos, playing on her Kindle. She'll also come for a run fairly happily, but that may be limited to the fact she'll often get a treat afterwards. She'll read, but mainly only at bedtime. She is happiest being around other people.

Divebar2021 · 15/08/2021 10:01

She’s into “ screens” including games on my phone which is pretty annoying… but simultaneously useful occasionally. She watches a few You Tubers - some who have screechy voices and are into “pranks” but some who are arty or animal rescue. She likes playing with any animal - - particularly dogs but only has a cat herself. She likes to do art and crafts -colouring, painting, beading and jewellery making, origami etc Shes getting keener on reading since discovering Wimpy kid but still has to be told to read although she does like the Beano. She’s very keen on any young woman with fake nails /tan/eyelashes and bling ( god help us) and would have acrylic nails if I’d let her. She mainly wears leggings and hoodies though and discovered those big stacked trainers were not as comfortable as her old New Balance ones. She’s fascinated by rocks, minerals and fossils and has just spent £20 holiday money on a variety of sparkly minerals and fossilised sharks teeth. She likes listening to music - currently Jason Derulo. She likes the idea of Billie Eilish more than listening to her music. She rides a bike if we go out together and is learning to horse ride. She swims and is good at it. She wants to play football but is nervous about going to proper organised sessions. She’s pretty gorgeous - has fantastic long beachy hair but she doesn’t see it and says no boys at school fancy her. ( thank god). She doesn’t like boys anyway - they’re annoying.
