£31 for two bags of fudge?! 😲

I was at a seaside festival with dd yesterday, and looked round the food stalls before we left. There was a pick & mix fudge stall, you fill your own bags and get them weighed.

I picked a small selection for dd & I for the journey home, and a slightly bigger one for my parents, as we're seeing them tonight.

Lovely fudge - salted caramel, candyfloss, oreo, every flavour you could imagine, but I couldn't believe it when asked for £31!! Paid it, wasn't allowed to put any back, so we'll make it last! 😋

Got bitten the same way in Ludlow - same sort of artisan stall run by a swarthy gent selling glacé fruit.

Passenger42 · 13/08/2021 18:22

I don’t understand why you weren’t brave enough to just say I am not paying that and leave it on the counter and walk out! They make profit out of trying to make out you cannot change your mind. They cannot retain you and call police for refusing to buy sweets.lol.

Same as those signs that say all breakages must be paid for.. like no I don’t think so. It’s a civil matter not a police matter, I would like to see anyone try to sue in small claims for two bags of fudge, would cost more to start the legal action.

Yourcatisnotsorry · 13/08/2021 18:23

I know someone who once paid £35 for 2 sandwiches in subway. They kept asking do you want extra cheese/more of this etc and he thought it was all included and just said yes to everything 😂

[quote MoonlightWanderer]This one. 99 Euros on three bags of sweets.

Yes, it was that one! I'd totally misremembered the amount by quite some way Blush

Peraltiago · 13/08/2021 18:27

I remember when DM took me and Dsis to Hamleys when we were small. We got some pic n mix that was a lot more than we thought it would be, mum had to pay about £10 each (this was back in the 80s) - she was very annoyed and we were told we had to make it last!

ExtremelyDisorganised · 13/08/2021 18:27

We've been caught with the artisan olives, about £25 for two small tubs and they weren't even very nice.

purplebunny2012 · 13/08/2021 18:28

That's GBP, BTW. €99 would be less

labazslovesliving · 13/08/2021 18:29

thank you for the Carnation recipes some lovely makes

132orbust · 13/08/2021 18:32

To all the people saying just leave it and the shop will put it back - no they cannot do that if its a mix.
What if there is a piece of fudge with nuts in there? or some of the lives are with chilli flakes? A shop/stall cannot risk cross contamination like that. As a student I worked in a sweet centre and this was before there was as much awareness of anaphylaxis and we would never put things back so it had to be binned.
You can just ask amounts as you go along - the cost a business money like this is terrible.

132orbust · 13/08/2021 18:34

Obviously that is meant to be olive not lives...
and to cost.... Blush

I've only been to Subway once and I was under the impression you could have as much as you wanted as a filling too. Glad I only went for cheese and ham now! Shock

They could serve it themselves into a bag on the scale in front of you, or do a cost per slice.

sloutside · 13/08/2021 18:42

The whole point of pic and mix is that people end up spending WAY too much because it's almost impossible to judge how much 100g is.
The price for 100g might not seem too bad but before you know it you've got 500g in the bag and can't put it back!

browneyes77 · 13/08/2021 18:42

Blimey! Shock

I remember holidaying in Cornwall and me and my DP visited Rick Steins bakery in Padstow.

I eyed up the most delicious looking meringue. We had one each they looked so lush. They were £6 each! For a meringue!

And I thought that was expensive. I’d have fainted at £31 for fudge! GrinGrin

Our place was a serve yourself and people did come up to check. The point of my post is all the people saying just leave it, they'll put it back. They won't or if they do they risk killing someone.
kowari · 13/08/2021 18:42

@Wills

Must admit I wondered if it was Broadstairs Folk week where it was 2.69 per 100g but the £2.69 was in very large letters and visible behind the queue and the 'per 100g' was in tiney tiny letters only visible after I'd agreed to my youngest having a bag. £6.00 later and she'd got 3 chunks!
That seems reasonable, I've paid £5 for a huge 175g slice.
dryasaboner · 13/08/2021 18:43

Even rolys fudge pantry isn't that bad

Gilly12345 · 13/08/2021 18:46

They saw you coming unfortunately.

We’re the prices displayed?

I think they were profiteering due to COVID restrictions and are making hay while the sun shines.

kowari · 13/08/2021 18:46

They won't or if they do they risk killing someone.
The staff can take it home then. It's a risk the business owner takes when they choose a business model designed to trick people into spending more than they'd intended.

CoastalSwimmer · 13/08/2021 18:47

I've been stung by the olive trader at our local farmers market. £19 for a small pot of olives! Never again, I'm very suspicious of food traders now unless their prices are clearly displayed.

purplebunny2012 · 13/08/2021 18:52

@MyDcAreMarvel

Worse rip off I have experienced was M and M world shop in London, £65 for pick and mix!
You must have got rather a lot of sweets for that, I've been a couple of times and got 2 rather filled bags (1 each for me and DS) each time and I've spent nowhere near that
TomRaider · 13/08/2021 18:52

Had the same thing at a kebab shop(seriously) was told I couldnt change the order so the debit card went back in the pocket and out the door I went. Miraculously he offered to do it half price (the price in the menu). But thought sod it I'm not being treated like that so went and cooked something. I think he decided there was a tourist charge and a card surcharge.

cushioncovers · 13/08/2021 18:52

Friends of ours bought a medium size pot of mixed olives at a festival and it costs £18 and that was 12 years ago. My then dh stood there with our jaws dropped open.

Gosh maybe I am not being clear so I'll say it again in a different way.

Many people are saying the business will put it back and resell it.
The business cannot risk reusing something that may be cross contaminated so they cannot 'just put it back'. That is the point I am trying to make - obviously unsuccessfully!
I'll leave it there.
