£31 for two bags of fudge?! 😲

I was at a seaside festival with dd yesterday, and looked round the food stalls before we left. There was a pick & mix fudge stall, you fill your own bags and get them weighed.

I picked a small selection for dd & I for the journey home, and a slightly bigger one for my parents, as we're seeing them tonight.

Lovely fudge - salted caramel, candyfloss, oreo, every flavour you could imagine, but I couldn't believe it when asked for £31!! Paid it, wasn't allowed to put any back, so we'll make it last! 😋

I remember my parents having a near heart attack when they let my DC choose M&M pick and mix in Leicester Square. It cost a lot so that's never been repeated. It was around £15 per large bag so not overly bad but still a lot compared to a bag from the supermarket

stripedbananas · 13/08/2021 16:41

In future if you can't put it back you can refuse point blank to pay for it as I can assure you they will happily put it back in your behalf.

Just put the bag down and walk away.

Wisteriabloom · 13/08/2021 17:16

I wish I'd just put it down and made out I didn't have enough money, (or pretended to go and find someone I was with, to get extra cash and then just not come back)!! The benefit of hindsight🤔

To the poster who asked if it was Broadstairs Folk Week, it wasn't, but you're close! It was a small event in Whitstable, Kent! We've been to Folk Week several times over the years though😊

Coming home on the train, I saw a couple who'd obviously been to the festival, opening one of those gift boxes of fudge with a picture of the sea on. I know for a fact they're about £2.50 each, I wish I'd just got a couple of boxes of those! 😀

That's ridiculous. I am surprised this are having pick and mix - not very hygienic/Covid safe. I would not be eating anything like that just now.

LouLou198 · 13/08/2021 17:26

This reminds me of Peter Kay telling the story of taking his gran to the cinema. She was getting pick and mix but wouldn't let her get fudge because it was too heavy, she could on have flumps marshmallows Grin

LittleMissPlant · 13/08/2021 17:31

I would have just said no, left it and walked away.

More fool you for paying it.

SunshineCake · 13/08/2021 17:36

Fair enough not to put back but I'd just say no thanks and walk off.

Yespresh · 13/08/2021 17:38

Artisan is another word for expensive

I've been stung by the olive stall too. They were delicious but they want to be for just over £15

MyDcAreMarvel · 13/08/2021 17:42

Worse rip off I have experienced was M and M world shop in London, £65 for pick and mix!

Courgetteandbeans · 13/08/2021 17:45

I got caught out by that on the olive stall at a chilli festival, no prices on display, I went a bit crazy and chose a lot, couldn't believe it when they wanted upwards of £40. Luckily we were able to put back anything that hadn't been mixed. Daylight robbery.

Carpedimum · 13/08/2021 17:45

We bought some stuffed baby aubergine at a market deli (amongst other stuff) £5 each (didn’t realise until it was all totted up) & although I thought they were nice, DP spat his out!

PandemicAtTheDisco · 13/08/2021 17:48

I got some marrons glacés and other candied fruits from a Christmas market stall. I expected to pay about £20 for the four chestnuts and maybe £10 for the fruit. They asked for £73. They had misleading prices for everything so I put it all back. They were really angry so I complained to the market organiser. I went back the next day and all the prices had been changed and were much clearer.

PeachyPeachTrees · 13/08/2021 17:51

I just bought 2 tiny bags of Roly's fudge in their Lyme Regis shop and they are £5 a bag. As others have said it's heavier than it looks and buying by weight is expensive!

ElsieMc · 13/08/2021 17:58

Not read the whole thread so sorry if someone has mentioned this. In York there is a wonderful fudge shop where you can watch it being made and can try samples. It is very expensive but prices are displayed and they do warn you it will be around a tenner. It is so nice though and we always go for a treat. Having said that, I have never ever paid £31! I like the lovely white vanilla one.

Wills · 13/08/2021 17:59

Must admit I wondered if it was Broadstairs Folk week where it was 2.69 per 100g but the £2.69 was in very large letters and visible behind the queue and the 'per 100g' was in tiney tiny letters only visible after I'd agreed to my youngest having a bag. £6.00 later and she'd got 3 chunks!

ASongOfRiceAndPeas · 13/08/2021 17:59

The Aldi clotted cream fudge is life changing.

FreddieMercurysCat · 13/08/2021 18:00

Blimey! And we thought we were done when we bought 2 bottles of water, one Fanta, one beer, one mini Pringles tub and a kinder egg and got charged £38!

HarrietsweetHarriet · 13/08/2021 18:03

Buttermilk brand caramel sea salt fudge is just the most delicious thing ever. It's got a Great Taste award and is about £4 a box. I can easily eat a box on my own so buy two if I know I'm going to have to share. So lush but very carolific- obvious really since it's pure sugar. But this stuff is some kind of magical fudge-alchemy.

paddlingon · 13/08/2021 18:08

@Incywinceyspider we also had the Dubrovnik pic and mix experience 🤣

MrsDisney · 13/08/2021 18:15

Think we visited this shop. Nearly fell through the floor at what my some spent!!

purplebunny2012 · 13/08/2021 18:16

@Incywinceyspider

I had this experience in a pick n mix in Dubrovnik. It was a pirate themed shop and I remember thinking it was a fairly accurate description!
I remember a thread about this shop. I think it came to £41 for the bag IIRC
Sniv · 13/08/2021 18:18

I appreciate these regular reminders to overcome my politeness gene. If someone is trying to screw you over with scammy pricing strategies, you owe them nowt.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 13/08/2021 18:18

No way would I have bought that. Id have put it down and walked off.
