£31 for two bags of fudge?! 😲

I was at a seaside festival with dd yesterday, and looked round the food stalls before we left. There was a pick & mix fudge stall, you fill your own bags and get them weighed.

I picked a small selection for dd & I for the journey home, and a slightly bigger one for my parents, as we're seeing them tonight.

Lovely fudge - salted caramel, candyfloss, oreo, every flavour you could imagine, but I couldn't believe it when asked for £31!! Paid it, wasn't allowed to put any back, so we'll make it last! 😋

That does sound steep. What was the weight per ounce or gram or however they do it nowadays?

The last time I had pick and mix in the 1980s it was about 20p for a quarter lb.

SquirryTheSquirrel · 12/08/2021 17:12

What was the weight per ounce or gram price, I mean, not weight.

PickAChew · 12/08/2021 17:14

I ought a small bag of fudge in York, a few years back and that was just short of £7.

It wasn't even made with butter.

Those things are always bonkers prices. Same with Turkish delight, baclava and olives.

£31!!

How many pieces?

Saucery · 12/08/2021 17:15

Were the prices displayed? There’s an ‘artisan’ market near me where a particular food stall does this. I was talking to one of the other vendors at another market and said we didn’t go to the artisan one any more because of the ridiculous price of the olive stall and she said he has been warned several times about not displaying his prices and ripping people off.

KupoNutCoffee · 12/08/2021 17:19

Fudge works out stupidly expensive at places like this.

Fudge is quite dense so you always underestimate how much its going to weigh. A couple of chunks, of the homemade, packed with chocolate oreo etc., could be 100g on its own. How much was it per 100g. Its always more than regular pick and mix

MintyGreenDream · 12/08/2021 17:19

That takes the piss.Id want a 20 pound note in my fudge for that

LubaLuca · 12/08/2021 17:20

I've been stung by one of these ripoff merchants on 'artisan' stalls, about 20 years ago at a food fair. Olives, of course Hmm

It's a shame because it's made me suspicious of all stallholders; unless their prices are clear, I won't even approach.

womaninatightspot · 12/08/2021 17:21

We had this experience in a pick and mix shop, it was about four quid for a tiny bag of sweets x 4 children. Apparently it's 6 quid for 100g. Steady influx of tourists in the season dead the rest of the year.

omgthepain · 12/08/2021 17:22

Fudge is so cheap and easy to make we make it at home when we bake and do all sorts of flavours
I use a lot of carnation milk recipes they work well and it costs about £2 to make tonnes of the stuff

I had this experience in a pick n mix in Dubrovnik. It was a pirate themed shop and I remember thinking it was a fairly accurate description!

stupiduser · 12/08/2021 17:26

Look up Roddas clotted cream fudge recipe. You will never bother buying fudge again.

MistySkiesAfterRain · 12/08/2021 17:28

Oh yes pick n mix. Bastards.

Moonlaserbearwolf · 12/08/2021 17:32

Fudge is so expensive, but £31 must be a record! I wonder how much it was per 100gr? Our local fudge place is about £2.50/100gr so you’d have to have two pretty hefty bags to reach £31 (easily done though with fudge!)

omgthepain · 12/08/2021 17:35

@stupiduser

Thanks I'll look at that later my little girl loves making fudge

aerosocks · 12/08/2021 17:38

I want fudge now.

MichelleScarn · 12/08/2021 17:40

Did you get a photo of the bags?! Were they actually bib bag size?

MarmaladeToastAndAMarmaladeCat · 12/08/2021 17:40

I was stung by some olives at a farmers market a while ago. It worked out as literally £1 per olive Angry

purpledagger · 12/08/2021 17:42

I'm going to have a go at making fudge.

Chocolatier9 · 12/08/2021 17:42

Mmm… carnation milk fudge… schlurrrpppp

adagio · 12/08/2021 17:42

Now I want fudge. Godammit.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 12/08/2021 17:44

I'm going to have a crack at that clotted cream fudge now. I live close to Lakeland so I will be getting a sugar thermometer ASAP! Thanks @stupiduser

BarbaraofSeville · 12/08/2021 17:44

The price per 100 g must have been huge, or else you literally bought a sack of it.

Lidl's luxury fudge is amazing and costs about £1.50 for a small box maybe 125 g.

You can make it without a thermometer, you just need to Google how to test it by dropping a small amount in cold water.
