£31 for two bags of fudge?! 😲

I was at a seaside festival with dd yesterday, and looked round the food stalls before we left. There was a pick & mix fudge stall, you fill your own bags and get them weighed.

I picked a small selection for dd & I for the journey home, and a slightly bigger one for my parents, as we're seeing them tonight.

Lovely fudge - salted caramel, candyfloss, oreo, every flavour you could imagine, but I couldn't believe it when asked for £31!! Paid it, wasn't allowed to put any back, so we'll make it last! 😋

Ha, this reminds me of the time I went into a (very lovely) fudge shop in a touristy town with a friend who is a jeweller. She remarked that gram for gram the fudge was quite a bit more expensive than the market value of gold on that day.

BrilloPaddy · 12/08/2021 19:59

We got stung by one of those awful pirate themed pick and mix shops in Prague. DD's both got a small bag each, and muggins here ended up paying the £40 as neither had enough money Hmm Worst part was that most of it was inedible........

Reminds me of the time my DC got pick and mix from Winter wonderland Shock

@YogaLite

Those food fairs are such a con.
They are. I know they've got their overheads at ye olde foode fayre and have to make a living but you end up paying a fortune for 'artisan' produce handmade in their own organic farm, when honestly 9 times out of 10 it's no better than what you could get in Lidl or make in your own kitchen.
mumofthemonsters808 · 12/08/2021 20:13

I had a similar experience buying overpriced fudge, in a holiday resort, I nearly fell over when we got to the till and the price appeared. To add insult to injury it was the most sickly, awful fudge I had ever tasted, it ended up in the bin.I’ve not bought any since.

DrGoogleSaysSo · 12/08/2021 20:14

It's the same @ the Christmas Markets. What a rip-off! Angry

WiddlinDiddlin · 12/08/2021 20:15

Once you've made fudge with clotted cream (watch out for it on the bargain shelf in the supermarket and snaffle the lot, you can also make a glorious salted caramel sauce that lasts ages if jarred properly), you will NEVER go back to bought stuff OR condensed milk stuff again!

It is divine!

Lovemusic33 · 12/08/2021 20:16

I have been caught out several times with fudge, prices are displayed but it’s hard to judge price by weight 🤣. I love some good fudge as do the kids but buying 6 cubes often costs a bomb.

woodhill · 12/08/2021 20:20

I hate being ripped off. Is the expression- they saw you coming

IcedPurple · 12/08/2021 20:22

On a slightly different note, I love fudge (although not at that price!) but the amount of sugar horrifies me! No getting around it either. If one of those 'artisan' food sellers could invent low-sugar fudge I'd be queuing up for it!

onelittlefrog · 12/08/2021 20:29

@BarbaraofSeville

How can they not allow you to put it back? They can't force you to pay for it, so what's to stop you putting it on the counter and saying 'I'm sorry, I don't want to buy it at that price'?
Quite a few food shops have an "if you touch, you buy" rule, even outside of Covid times. It's just hygiene.

You should have checked the price before you started filling up bags... doesn't everyone do this with pick n mix?? It's often crazy expensive!

Littlekittyscupcake · 12/08/2021 20:32

@Onelittlefrog well you’d hardly 4xpect it to cost £31 quid would you? 😂

GlutenFreeGingerCake · 12/08/2021 20:34

I would stand there and tell any other customers how much they charged.

spongedod · 12/08/2021 20:34

I would still put it down and laugh at them for trying t to charge me £31 for fudge. What can they do? Take me to court to force me to buy their fudge Confused

Thesearmsofmine · 12/08/2021 20:35

I’ve been stung like this before. Fudge is heavy and you don’t realise!

Also nearly fainted once at the price of a small bag of Lindt pick and mix.

scully29 · 12/08/2021 20:35

haha reminds me of the time i was a kid in woolworths and totally misunderstood the pricing of picknmix! Totally filled a huge bag and could no way afford it so had to leave it at the counter!!!! was so gutted and embarrassed!

mrsbeeton999 · 12/08/2021 20:35

That’s bad. My daughter bought 8 cola bottles at a pick and mix at a concert in the park last week and the man charged her £9. How can you do that to a child? Horrible people

scully29 · 12/08/2021 20:36

But yes £31 is too much fudge!

BloomingTrees · 12/08/2021 20:36

I once wanted to buy 1 piece of baklava from a stall for DC who was hungry, but was told could only buy 100g min, so I chose a few other pieces (which they put in bag for me). Got to the till and was told it would be around £25. Totally shocked I walked away with an upset DC who didn't get a treat.

I did once get stung at an artisan cheese stall. Bought 2 smallish pieces, one for me and one present- over £30. I paid but I should have walked away.

scully29 · 12/08/2021 20:36

8 cola bottle for £9! that is wrong!

Exactly but it is embarrassing - we've all been there
Marmite27 · 12/08/2021 20:38

That’s crazy! If you’ve got a slow cooker you can make fudge easily enough.

I did chocolate orange at the weekend. 4 chocolate oranges broken up, a tin of condensed milk and a teaspoon of butter.

Mix until melted then leave for 5 or so minutes until it forms a ‘crust’. Mix it up again and repeat. I pour out into a 9in square silicone cake mould and put sprinkles on (100’s and 1000’s this week, but we’ve done snowflakes, rudolf and red noses, jolly and red noses, unicorn mix, mermaid mix, dragon mix and at Easter mini mini eggs).

Leave it to set overnight then turn out and chop into pieces and store in the fridge. I’ve frozen some this time to see how it gets on.

spongedod · 12/08/2021 20:39

I wouldn't be embarrassed at all. They are the ones who should be embarrassed, not me. It's telling that you think it would be embarrassing for the potential purchaser though, that's how they get so many people sucked in. There is not a chance in hell I would pay it.

I didn't think the OP would be touching it, it's normally behind the counter and you ask for 6 pieces of rum raisin or 200 g or whatever.

Roystonv · 12/08/2021 20:45

I can understand having to buy if you have touched the fudge but surely you/the store owner use tongs, even before Covid this would be a basic good practice??
