If you could spend a week shadowing someone else's job....

What job would you choose?

Weirdly sparked by the thread on ordering a whole trout –a few ex-fishmongers on there and I thought "ooh, I'd love to do that for a couple of days to learn the tricks"

I don't know if it'd be my first choice but it got me thinking –what job would you love a sneak peek into / to learn the basics of?

Ideally Chris Hemsworths masseuse but if I couldn't do that then a chef as I'm not a terribly imaginative cook

AfternoonToffee · 11/08/2021 20:28

Absolutely not a fishmonger, something to do with trains, either a driver or signal box operator.

BikeRunSki · 11/08/2021 20:28

Chris Whitty or JVT

I’d like to see how they handle the media circus around their work. I’ve am a much lowlier government scientist and found my work under much media scrutiny a few years ago. Hated it. Was told my technical opinion was “politically inconvenient”.

The Prime Minister. I would want to read all the Top Secret stuff & find out what’s really going on.

Obviously I would ask Sir Humphrey about this stuff, not Boris. He is notoriously lazy and he doesn’t read his briefings so he wouldn’t have a clue.

ILiveInSalemsLot · 11/08/2021 20:33

The next astronaut going on a mission.

ILiveInSalemsLot · 11/08/2021 20:33

Or Elon Musk. Must be interesting following him around.

That does sound like fun! Would you pick a particular route? Trans-Siberian railway, perhaps?! Grin

Jason Mamoa for me 😁

I'd love to shadow someone like Boris Johnson, I just have to know if my assumption that he basically prats around saying nothing of any worth, flitting in and out of meetings as he wants and eating/drinking expensive things paid for by someone else, is an accurate representation of his job.

GrrRightBackAtYou · 11/08/2021 20:36

Zoo keeper hand rearing lion or tiger Cubs

Redcrayons · 11/08/2021 20:38

Chris Witty and JVT are a good shout. Who would have ever predicted they would have been so famous a couple of years ago. I reckon JVT secretly loves the limelight!

MrsTerryPratchett · 11/08/2021 20:39

Criminal lawyer, me in another life!

WhoWants2Know · 11/08/2021 20:39

Zookeeper/Wildlife conservationist

AnonymousCheerleader · 11/08/2021 20:52

999 call handler.

YanTanTethera123 · 11/08/2021 20:55

The Queen or a Forensic Scientist

Wow - yes, that'd be fascinating. Tough, but fascinating.

  • A brain surgeon
  • Someone who designs complicated things e.g. bridges
  • Air traffic controller
OneMorePieceofCheese · 11/08/2021 21:08

Theme park planner - the logistics and the psychology behind influencing customers' behaviours - eg driving them to quieter areas of the park, keeping them in queues etc. Always weirdly fascinated me.

Eirefairy · 11/08/2021 21:08

Archaeologist hands down. Would absolutely love to be one (I have a very different job!!)

Wombat64 · 11/08/2021 21:08

I did shadow my MP as work experience. It was excellent!

I only suggested it as I cba to actually go work anywhere. Plus na change!

Redcrayons · 11/08/2021 21:10

I’d love to see what the day to day life of the Queen is like.

ThreeWitches · 11/08/2021 21:12

Forensic scientists! I would love to go to a crime scene.

ZealAndArdour · 11/08/2021 21:16

I’d like to shadow an upholsterer to see if it’s a realistic second career option for me (currently a nurse).

Have daydreams of running my own little independent upholstery business and coming up with these gorgeous creations giving peoples old furniture a second lease of life in the most vivid colours and patterns of velvet and shot taffeta. Headboards and occasional chairs, curtains, entire three piece suites, etc.

Komandoo · 11/08/2021 21:19

Wildlife photographer working with David Attenborough.

I do also love the suggestion above about theme park planner though. I used to want to be a town planner after playing a lot of simcity but after some work experience in the local planning office came to realise it was a lot more boring than the computer game.

Summernamechange2021 · 11/08/2021 21:21

Gold mining -like in the programme Gold Rush. Just watching a person going out as self employed and asking his friends to leave their jobs and go working with him for the season.

I have a boring desk job with long hours and would love to get an opportunity like that. I'd love to work outdoors.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 11/08/2021 21:22

Estate agent. I want to know how much of the job involves the bits I like (poking around houses, handling negotiations).
