Anyone else see lots of people buying bottled waters?

Like those 1 or 2 litre multipack bottles?

I've just been to Tesco express (it's tiny) and two separate customers were complaining that there wasn't any big bottles of water about

I thought that was a coincidence, but thinking about it, I keep seeing lots of people in Asda and Aldi doing this too!

I mentioned it to the guy at the till and he said he'd seen an increase for sure, though he wasn't sure why. Last time he saw it was during the first lockdown and they ended up restricting the amount you could buy at once anyway

I know people like bottles water for various reasons, and I have a friend who's DS won't have anything else due to his autism. But surely this is unusual?

"I'm pregnant and my craving has been bottled water throughout my pregnancy"

Jesus wept 😂 this has got to be the best excuse I've read so far.

You're just thirsty.

The plastic bottles are usually imported Brexit There is a shortage of containers for many things not just water. My friend in a food manufacturing and is having a nightmare

I would just assume it’s because more people are holidaying in UK this year, so stocking up for camping, caravan etc.

Several reasons I reckon

  1. People’s personal choice
2.shortage of bottled water on shelf leading to panic buying
  1. Stocking up in case of isolation/ lockdown

Or according to my conspiracy mad friends panic because The internet is about to be switched off leading to mass panic / crime/ control from the government etc etc

(Most likely a combination of the first three)

I was told that the major chemical company producing sterilising for water bottle manufacturers was itself struggling with pingdemic on top of all other problems. We’ve become so complex that it’s a veritable house of cards - or domino effect.

PumpkinKlNG · 12/08/2021 13:13

what rubbish. Why do people keep sending their children in to school with water in any case - totally unnecessary. This is just a stupid fad initiated by the big bottled water companies. NO CHILD needs a supply of drinking water available in the classroom. A small water bottle for collecting a drink from the water fountain at lunch time, drink on the spot, carry the water bottle completely empty - problem solved.

Our school says we HAVE to, parents that don’t get pulled up for not sending their kids in with one. Heres a picture to prove it since you won’t believe me 😏 also it’s not “user error” I check them as soon as I buy them and they’ve all leaked, again I don’t care if you believe me or not I’m not buying them again.

I meant I haven't noticed a shortage 'cos there's no need to buy bottled water in Scotland. Although realistically, there's no need to buy bottled water in the UK as the water's fine. Stick some cordial in it and do your bit to save the planet.

liveforsummer · 12/08/2021 15:06

@Hdhdjejdj

All water in the UK is drinkable. Stop lying about it to justify your stupid, selfish behaviour.
I don't buy bottled water, I do just add squash (meaning extra sugar or, equally as bad extra artificial sweeteners) which is rather not do, when needed, but there are very few places I can drink the tap water plain. It can be really unpleasant. Thankfully the water where I live is lovely.
GingerAndTheBiscuits · 12/08/2021 15:31

I must have a seriously underdeveloped palate because I’ve never noticed a difference in the taste of water anywhere I’ve been. We live in a really hard water area so I noticed the extent of limescale but that’s it. Maybe it’s because I don’t drink tea?! DH would have me believe the water is Very Important for tea.

Sparklingbrook · 12/08/2021 15:33

Our tap water (Worcestershire) sometimes has a chemically smell and taste but the filter jug sorts it out.

Taste can be genetic. There is a science experiment where people taste a piece of paper that to some tastes absolutely bitter and vile and others it's like - tasting a bit of paper (obviously not just paper just can't remember what it's dipped in). Things like cucumber and melon that taste mild and watery to some can taste absolutely revolting to others. I think coriander is another common one that is mild and delicious to some and vile and unbearable to others. Just because many can't really tell the difference in waters it can be a strong reaction for others.
Bedsheets4knickers · 12/08/2021 15:41

Funnily enough I went into a supermarket the other evening and a couple walked out with a trolley load . So much so that I've remembered it .

gogohm · 12/08/2021 15:43

@OldTinHat

Buy a filter jug, works out a lot cheaper and saves a lot of plastic and mileage

WrongKindOfFace · 12/08/2021 15:45

I’ve been to Tesco today and there was loads of bottled water. A few small gaps down the aisle but that’s not much different to any other aisle at the minute. Bloody Brexit.

TAX PLASTIC NOW!!!

I am so angry at this thread!!! Environmental vandalism.Angry

AngelsWithSilverWings · 12/08/2021 15:47

Noticed this issue when I was camping last week. Tried to get bottled water ( we use the same bottle and refill it from the campsite tap rather than take one of those camping water carriers) couldn't get anything other than a massive bottle so we made do with that.

Also had lots of trouble getting supermarket own brand squash. Ended up having to pay for expensive Robinsons.

Ditto bottled coke - had to get cans.

Agree with this. Bottled water at 17p is madness.

then complain to the school - that is terrible - and if the school does not change, then report to ofsted

It’s no wonder the planets in the state it is…. Imagine the amount of plastic for something you can get out of your tap for free…. 🙄
Exactly. In our last house it tasted horrible so we filtered it, but now it's fine.
uktrippin · 12/08/2021 20:21

@PumpkinKlNG seriously. There are many many bottles that do not leak. Try SHO or Chillys

TheVolturi · 12/08/2021 20:31

My DC’s school doesn’t have a water fountain. I’ve been inside a lot of schools and don’t recall seeing one since I was attending my own primary school many moons ago. Even less likely to be used in Covid times I would have thought! I wonder if they’ll make a comeback

Fountains at my children’s school were closed due to covid.

Good times

54321nought · 12/08/2021 21:32

schools have taps

And children should be refilling their bottles every couple of hours anyway, bacteria will be multiplying very quickly in the bottle once saliva has been mixed in.

So they can't be drinking from the same water in the afternoon that they drank from in the morning.
