If you ordered a whole trout from a supermarket online delivery what would you expect to get?

A) a whole trout - not gutted, not scaled. Entirely untouched
B) a whole trout - gutted and scaled
C) a whole trout - gutted, scaled and pin boned

Follow up question, if you got A, would you know you needed to do B/C before cooking?

I think the tradition is to weigh the whole fish for the price and then offer to gut

I'd be surprised to get a whole intact fish from a supermarket.

SarahAndQuack · 11/08/2021 20:14

@LST - oh, no, they were in a little bag, like you get with a turkey, it's just I wasn't expecting them. It would have been roast plastic, appetising!

AlternativePerspective · 11/08/2021 20:14

Oh yes definitely a head/tail, even if it had been gutted.

TBH if you want gutted/boned/scaled you should buy butterflied trout.

I'd expect A.

I'd know what to do. If it happened to DH, he'd sooner pretend it hadn't arrived at all than touch it.

godmum56 · 11/08/2021 20:17

I would expect gutted but not scaled....wouldn't blench at not gutted and can do it all but I loathe trout so it wouldn't happen.

PegasusReturns · 11/08/2021 20:18

@Mpsister

“Disgusted not discusted”

Everyone knows that when someone is really appalled at a situation they can only be DISCUSTED

Iknowtheanswer · 11/08/2021 20:21

I'd expect it to be gutted, but tbh, my dad used to trout fish and he'd gut straight away.

CrunchyCarrot · 11/08/2021 20:22

A.

Yes I know how to scale, gut and bone a fish. My ex was a fish chef! Possibly the only good thing I got out of the relationship. Grin

User7458 · 11/08/2021 20:22

I would have probably read the reviews, Tesco and Waitrose have them , not sure about other supermarkets as you can generally get an idea from them what to expect. I would expect A though

5zeds · 11/08/2021 20:22

Definitely gutted, and hopefully scaled. As soon as anything is dead it should be drawn surely???Shock

Latenightreader · 11/08/2021 20:22

I once bought a mackerel and forgot to ask for head off and innards out. I was a bit horrified when I realised, but told myself that if Susan (12ish?) can manage it on an island in Swallows and Amazons, I could cope in a kitchen in my 30s...

I always remember these days, but did once accidentally ask an Italian fishmonger to cut my head off rather than that of the fish. He looked very confused at first.

Sparklfairy · 11/08/2021 20:26

@Mpsister well that backfired for you didn't it? Grin

Mintjulia · 11/08/2021 20:27

A and yes, I'd know what to do.

But I'd have to be convinced it was fresh. Leaving a fish ungutted for too long does not improve it.

User7458 · 11/08/2021 20:28

DH usually deals with fish, he goes fishing so doesn't mind handling it and the smell, I prefer it frozen and crumbed if I have to do it.

pastabest · 11/08/2021 20:29

Yes I was hoping it would be gutted, just because. But in fairness it looked and smelled very fresh so I wasn't concerned that it wasn't.

It was from Morrisons.

Tbh pasta all I can think is that you have really let the side down. Trout on a Wednesday, what the fuck do you serve on a Friday night Swan?

DotBall · 11/08/2021 20:34

OP I just knew you were going to say Morrisons. They’re fish is excellent in our branch but trout in particular often come whole straight off the slab.

DotBall · 11/08/2021 20:35

Their fish ffs 🙈

MarianneUnfaithful · 11/08/2021 20:36

B.

MistySkiesAfterRain · 11/08/2021 20:37

A. and yes.

ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia · 11/08/2021 20:39

Option A - so whole fish unless otherwise stated as being prepared. Fresh or frozen at source but complete.

As an aside seafood is my preferred go to protein staple especially because of taste and added bonus of heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids. Fan of crustaceans and all fish especially turbot, seabass and sashimi. Ideally we should be more continental European and have a more developed, knowledgeable, acquired but less squeamish seafood culture particularly of British waters caught fish just than good olde classic fish and chips of meaty white fish you can’t see covered in batter with no favour like cod and haddock over fished in the North Atlantic. Not that there is anything wrong and indeed everything right too in the British national fish supper.

KingdomScrolls · 11/08/2021 20:39

I would've been the same OP hoping for B but braced for A. I paid my way through uni working in restaurant kitchens so I can do it, but would usually get the fishmonger to

Had the trout been gutted it may have been intended for Friday.

But I took one look at it and decided it needed dealing with immediately.

Tonight's Crispy Swan Pancakes will now have to wait until Friday.

Crispy Swan Pancakes

Haha! Grin

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 11/08/2021 20:46

Ah ! If it was a Rainbow Trout I would expect, either a coick of gold or a small unicorn to be attached to it's tail.
