If you ordered a whole trout from a supermarket online delivery what would you expect to get?

A) a whole trout - not gutted, not scaled. Entirely untouched
B) a whole trout - gutted and scaled
C) a whole trout - gutted, scaled and pin boned

Follow up question, if you got A, would you know you needed to do B/C before cooking?

Sorry @LST! No offence intended.

To be fair to supermarket fishmongers I think some people just don't really eat the bit near the head so don't mind - but I am 1) greedy and 2) have a child who begs for cheeks, so I notice.

A

No no none taken! I was regularly asked to remove the gills by people because the other people who I worked with never did!

I bought it hoping for B but anticipating and prepared for A.

DH is DISCUSTED Grin that it has arrived with the guts still in and isn't entirely convinced that it's not poisonous.

For a time I wasn't convinced he was going to agree to eat it (but we have just eaten it and it was delicious).

Although I don't now, I worked in a fishmongers in my youth (which he knows) so I was more than capable of preparing it properly.

But it came sealed in a generic sealed fish bag with generic instructions that it could be cooked in the bag, someone less observant might not have realised that it was still A and not B or C and chucked it in the oven whole.

The bag on further inspection doesn't actually include whole trout as one of the 'cook in the bag' options, but it's really not clear at first look.

DH admits that had I rung him and asked him to start supper off on my way home I would have been presented with steamed fish guts tonight...

Like previous posters, I’d expect it to be gutted but not scaled. And, yes, I’d know it would need scaled before cooking.

Disgusted not discusted

canigooutyet · 11/08/2021 19:48

Although most stores have a comment box so if you wanted it sent in a specific way I would mention it and be pissed off when arrived not as specified.

Lovemusic33 · 11/08/2021 19:49

Gutted but not necessarily scaled. Im happy to gut and scale 🤣, also it’s pretty hard to remove bones from a whole trout, easier to cook it hole then the bones just lift out by lifting the spine?

Yes I know. Hence the Grin after it...

A or B (or something in between) and yes.

SarahAndQuack · 11/08/2021 19:51

Oh, that is a bit grim not to make clear it's got the guts. Mind you I had this recently with a chicken - you rarely get chickens with the guts any more (I think you have to have a special licence or something?) and I nearly just shoved a lemon up there and popped it in.

I think the grin afterwards shows it was deliberately spelled incorrectly.
HeyManIJustWantSomeMuesli · 11/08/2021 19:53

It is a bit unhelpful that it came in one of those cook-in bags though!

Mpsister · 11/08/2021 19:54

Gutted, not scaled

bluebeck · 11/08/2021 19:56

TatianaBis · 11/08/2021 20:02

I’ve ordered whole fish many a time so I know it’s A.

Hardly a big deal. Just scrape out the guts and cook. Never bothered to scale it, its easy to take the skin off once it’s cooked.

SunshineCake · 11/08/2021 20:02

A and yes. I used to work on a fish counter.

riceuten · 11/08/2021 20:06

A

Unless they specified otherwise.

Plumtree391 · 11/08/2021 20:07

C

Hollyhead · 11/08/2021 20:07

A and I’d have a vague idea but would probably seek out a YouTube tutorial too!

ViceLikeBlip · 11/08/2021 20:09

Definitely gutted - I'm not Bear fucking Grylls!

I could deal with a fishes guts but I don't think I could gut a chicken!!
AlternativePerspective · 11/08/2021 20:10

B but yes.

But I rarely buy whole fish as I am visually impaired and trying to eat past the bones is difficult, and although I know how to debone it, the fishmongers look like surgeons as they do it, whereas the idea of just lifting out all of the bones is just something I imagine being able to do but in truth would probably balls it up. Grin

If I buy from the fish shop then I ask for fish to be filleted, and for prawns to be peeled/deveined, although actually I do know how to do that and have done it myself, as prawn shells etc are a delicious addition to make a seafood bisque.

LH1987 · 11/08/2021 20:13

Whole trout, I’d expect it with bones and possibly a head.

DoItAfraid · 11/08/2021 20:13

B and yes
