How long do you keep clothes for? People at work have made feel a bit shit

Work colleague was talking about her nephew earlier saying he’s started to get a bit mouthy. She said he’s 10 though so I guess it’s fairly normal. I said I’ve got clothes older than him and the 3 of them all looked rather shocked and said they can’t believe I’m wearing stuff that’s so old

Please tell me I’m not the only one

I definitely have clothes I had 10 years ago. If they are still in decent condition, and you still like them, why wouldn't you keep them?

Also, it's eco-friendly to keep things longer.

I also buy a lot of things on ebay.

xYerDaSellsAvonx · 09/08/2021 18:00

I still have and wear a long black fine knit cardigan my mum bought me from Kookai for my 15th birthday. So that's 27 years old.

KirstenBlest · 09/08/2021 18:01

I have some clothes from the 1980s.

xYerDaSellsAvonx · 09/08/2021 18:03

Just to add I recently bought a mens vintage levi jacket for my dd in Afflecks Palace for £50 that is almost 50 years old. It belonged to the store holders uncle.

I fluctuate on my weight sadly and have clothes in at least four sizes but I do keep wearing them. I am more about fewer clothes that get hammered for a short time because they fit than a lot of clothes I think I have stuff that's about 11 years old. I respect wholeheartedly people who keep clothes for years!

MolG5276bvfg · 09/08/2021 18:15

Lol, I’m 55, I have a bat wing sleeve jumper from the 1980’s, I love it and wear it every time it comes back in fashion. So that’s over 35 years old.

fussychica · 09/08/2021 18:18

I've still got the top I wore for the evening of my wedding, that was 43 years agoShock
I have lots of clothes that are in excess of 10 years old. If I like something I wear it until it's worn out.
Ignore them.

Summerbreeze4 · 09/08/2021 18:30

Until they wear out which is hardly ever, I have lots that are 20 years old.

BuckarooWithBruceGrobelaar · 09/08/2021 18:32

@EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall

I did until I lost a lot of weight
Yep, me too. I did keep a couple of favourites that my mum altered for me, including a Johnny Cash tshirt I bought 15 years ago. The oldest item I currently have is the blanket my grandad bought for my mum and dad on their wedding day nearly 40 years ago. It's massive (big enough to cover my superking bed) and it keeps me warm through the winter months

@TeapotCollection

SofiaMichelle I didn’t think they were suggesting I’m poor, more like tight I think (which I’m absolutely not). It was the looks on their faces

This has made me see that it’s their problem though and not mine, thanks everyone 😊

Ah ok, definitely their problem not yours! Smile

I bought a pair of dungarees that were made in the 80's the other day

CovidCorvid · 09/08/2021 19:11

@DoucheCanoe

Until it's wrecked, I don't like it or it doesn't fit.
This.

My oldest dress I bought when I was 19yo, I'm now mid 40s. I get compliments every time I wear it. Quality, classic stuff lasts. Your colleagues probably buy cheap fashion from Primark and are too concerned with being bang on trend, the issue with that is 12 months later it might be dated.

For the sake of the environment I'm really trying not to buy stuff just for the sake of buying stuff or even because it's nice. I think do I need it, is there something else I can wear for x occasion which I already have. Saving the world and more money for other stuff!

One of my favourite summer dresses is the dress I wore for my 20th birthday and I'm 46 Grin I have LOADS of my super old stuff. Far less fast fashion than these days, clothes from years ago last longer! Also not many people are able to wear clothes from years ago as their body isn't the same shape.
xsquared · 09/08/2021 19:25

I have my very first pair of Levis that I saved up for when I was 14. I am 42 now and it's in far better condition than the pairs I've bought within the last 10 years.

Your colleagues are being ridiculous.

OoglyMoogly · 09/08/2021 19:38

In winter I usually wear a huge woollen cape I bought in M&S in 1990. It's toasty warm, washes like a dream and I remember thinking “will I get the wear out of it as it's £25” Grin

felulageller · 09/08/2021 19:40

My dad still has a belt from the 60s!

Dp has plenty of 90s clothes.

My fav jeans I bought in 2006.

My mum has 4 wardrobes and has every decade from the 70s in there I'm sure.

SunSeaSurfGin · 09/08/2021 19:44

I still wear a jumper which I got when I was 11-15!!

Super comfy stuff my mum brought stuff big so I'd grow into it.

I wore a vintage dress the other day which was from the 1970s

MrsBirkett · 09/08/2021 19:45

My daughter has(and wears) a pair of cotton trousers i bought when I was pregnant with her sister. In 1989!

Funnylittlefloozie · 09/08/2021 19:50

I have a DvF wrap dress (a FUCKING ORIGINAL!!!) that I bought in NYC in 1998 when I was working there. I lived on packet noodles for a month after but omg it was worth it. I still wear it occasionally, it is still drop-dead gorgeous and I still get compliments on it. I've never owned anything so iconic or glamorous before or since... there is NOTHING I could buy in a high street shop now that is so amazing.

Nearlyadoctor · 09/08/2021 19:55

The other thing to someone told me once is ‘ the shops will never run out of clothes’. It’s been good a mantra to remember.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 09/08/2021 19:58

I wear clothes until they wear out or I out grow themBlush

But I know lots of people who refresh their wardrobes every season, and know a couple of people who won't wear the same things 'out out' twice. Hugely wasteful in my opinion.

milcal · 09/08/2021 20:02

I have a fleece that I bought about 20 years ago and still wear it occasionally. The colour is back in fashion 😁

Wishihadanalgorithm · 09/08/2021 20:02

DD was shocked when I, at the weekend, wore shoes that I wore when I was pregnant with her. DD is 7.5yrs old.

I’ve got dresses that are getting on for 15 years old (plus other bits even older) all expensive and only worn on certain occasions.

Be proud to wear vintage!

speakout · 09/08/2021 20:05

I have a pair of Ecco walking boots I bought for a holiday when I was 21. I still wear them 38 years later.
