How long do you keep clothes for? People at work have made feel a bit shit

Work colleague was talking about her nephew earlier saying he’s started to get a bit mouthy. She said he’s 10 though so I guess it’s fairly normal. I said I’ve got clothes older than him and the 3 of them all looked rather shocked and said they can’t believe I’m wearing stuff that’s so old

Please tell me I’m not the only one

I also have an Etsy shop (not clothes) - but anything over 20 years old counts as "vintage". That's 2001, people.
I feel old every time I think about it.

WeatherwaxOn · 09/08/2021 17:32

I've got a lot of stuff that's over 10 years old. If it fits, and I like it, and it still fulfils its purpose, why not?

PattyPan · 09/08/2021 17:33

I am wearing leggings right now that I’ve had since 2010 and I’m 26 so it’s not even an age thing particularly, I care about the environment so I wear my clothes until they wear out! (Or give them to charity shop if they don’t fit/suit me any more)

Thewinterofdiscontent · 09/08/2021 17:33

I wear my dads Harris tweed coat from when he was a teenager. So that’s nearly 60 years old.
I have one of the first items of clothing I bought as a teen myself. A Benetton cardigan from Oxford street bought in Boxing Day sale. That one is 33 years old and looks amazing.

I guess if you are only 25 you won’t have anything over 10 years old.

I keep clothes until they fall apart or wear out. I have them in MANY sizes......
Thinking carefully I think my oldest, regularly worn, item is a dusky pink hooded sweatshirt I bought with money I got for my birthday when I was 25. I am now 53. The cuffs are a bit baggy but it is warm and cosy and a good length and I love it. It was, I remember, expensive when I bought it. However it was well made and has absolutely stood the test of time.
I also have a towel I was bought at the age of 13/14 while on holiday in Belgium. It is my 'hair washing towel' now as it is the perfect size to wrap my long hair up in a turban. Several other of my towels came from my Grandparents' house when they died well over 25 years ago.
I do still have several other items of clothing I'd wear a lot if I was thinner including my rather fabulous biker jacket.
I'm not, it has to be said, a follower of fashion.

lalalapurple · 09/08/2021 17:35

I have a t-shirt I bought more than 20 years ago at the age of 12. If it fits and isn't falling apart why not keep it?

Although a while ago I did sadly get rid of my size 8 clothes as I thought I should admit to myself I will never fit in them again...
But I gave the decent ones to charity so someone else could wear them..

Tiddlywinkly · 09/08/2021 17:36

I love vintage clothes. I have some items that are clearly homemade in the 70s that are still amazing quality.

lanthanum · 09/08/2021 17:36

I have a jumper I bought in 1988 and still wear occasionally. It's stretched a little, but so have I!

Chloemol · 09/08/2021 17:38

I have clothes prolly 15+ years, linen tops that come out each summer and are just as good as when I got them

Terhou · 09/08/2021 17:38

I'm still wearing a Festival of the Sea sweatshirt that says it's from 1994.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 09/08/2021 17:39

I did until I lost a lot of weight

PickAChew · 09/08/2021 17:40

I have stuff more than 20 years old. If you like it, why be wasteful?

Ivyiris · 09/08/2021 17:41

I've definitely got clothes over ten years (I'm in my late twenties) most don't fit now though Grin two babies later

user68901 · 09/08/2021 17:41

I have plenty still from 00,s . I rarely throw anything out and if we do it goes to a deprived area where I know they are grateful to receive .
I’ve noticed the stuff that has lasted has been mostly from Jigsaw . Back in the days when it wasn’t quite so dirgy.

Most of my clothes are over 10 years old (My eldest is 10) 😀

Redsquirrel5 · 09/08/2021 17:44

I am so glad you have asked this question.

I have some that is easy ten years, some twenty and a Laura Ashley velvet suit that is at least 25 years. It doesn’t fit but I am hopeful that it will fit one day.
I have a few old t shirts too. One is my painting t shirt now. PJs my daughter bought me when she was 5 she is 30 but they are still good and still fit.
I have some skirts that are past their best so I am wearing them every day around the house and I have been lovely and cool when it has been hot. My friend used to do this and I suddenly remembered and it has made me happy because I love the fabric and the colours.

AtillatheHun · 09/08/2021 17:44

My Barbour is 38 and has my Mum’s handwriting on the name label - she bought it for me to grow into but sadly I didn’t really! I’ve also re worn the dress I wore for my 21st quite often / recently. Tell your colleagues that they’d do the same if they could still fit them.

Lovemusic33 · 09/08/2021 17:46

Some things I keep for years, bit mainly things like jackets, shoes and maybe good jeans. Most things 3 years max, usually because they get stained or damaged.

AllforOnsies · 09/08/2021 17:47

I wore a green velvet dress to a posh do at the weekend. Mid calf, simple sweetheart neckline and plain short sleeves.

My mum bought it for me for my 16th Birthday from Laura Ashley.

I was 48 in May. It has done my graduation, my engagement party, my going away dress, countess friends weddings, christenings and work things and now my daughter's graduation.

Now sells for more on the vintage market then it cost new.

Ourlady · 09/08/2021 17:48

You need to confidently own it OP.
I'm very proud of myself when I'm wearing something Ive had for about 20 years(and that's lots of things)
I actually brag about it I'm so proud

Jmaho · 09/08/2021 17:50

I wore a pair of jeans on Saturday that I bought in 2000

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 09/08/2021 17:51

My 16 year old wears clothes older than she is sometimes Grin (a leather jacket and a couple of summer dresses of mine, DH's old/ vintage band t-shirts, all from well before she was in existence Grin )

Totally agree.
There are such a number of reasons to hang onto clothes.
I do it with pride!

Half my wardrobe is 15-25yrs old. I have 2 double wardrobes. One has 2 rails higher and lower as well as 5 roomy shelves for tshirts, leggings, jumpers, shorts.

I rarely buy really cheap stuff. Never bought anything from primark.
