If it's their boundary, how come you've put your own fence along it? Isn't the fence on their side their responsibility? Or did you just want all your fences to be matchy-matchy and thought they'd go along with it?

Cameron2012 · 10/08/2021 10:30

I think your fence is lovely and I can absolutely see how upsetting it would be to find that next to you.
If the fence is over the legal limit I would be requesting that they take it down.
If it isn’t I would go with the clematis and honeysuckle idea.
If your neighbours are as nice as you say I would invite them round so they can see your view and maybe suggest taking your fence down and asking if they are ok with you painting your side.
We have a 5 ft fence in our garden and I put up a 6 ft trellis rather than upset my neighbour, I think you need to chat to yours about this, because that just looks ugly.
Good luck

gogohm · 10/08/2021 10:32

You aren't allowed more than 6ft without permission. If it's 3m you can complain to the council

SheWoreYellow · 10/08/2021 11:38

Looks like a standard 6’x6’ panel to me. The OP says she can’t see over it.

And of course you can paint the other side of their fence. It’s protective too. You don’t just leave it.

What does everyone else think should happen?

Of course you can't, it's someone else's property. You wouldn't paint someone else's garden furniture and you're not allowed to paint their fence unless they give you permission. Only if the OP put up her own fence on her own property then she would be allowed to paint it.

Its illegal to paint someone else's fence.

If it was OP fence just on its own they are not allowed to paint the side facing them without her permission, not allowed to attach anything like flowers or hanging baskets either without OP permission. Thats the law on boundary fencing.

They have put up their own fence in their own property boundary on their own land which they are entitled to do, tough shit if its looks horrible for OP, so long as its no more than 2m otherwise they need planning permission. Its also not a boundary fence. If OP paints it she could be charged with criminal damage its not her property.

Your advice is 100% wrong.

@SheWoreYellow you are talking rubbish. The OP can’t paint her neighbours fence. It is not her fence to paint.

What? Where does she say that and no she can’t just paint their fence. Confused
SheWoreYellow · 10/08/2021 13:19

Oh maybe I’m remembering wrong. She guessed it was 2m though.

I’m really confused about the not painting their fence though. Do people really have tatty faded fences on one side of their garden?

LST · 10/08/2021 13:26

I have never had a problem painting a fence facing my side of the garden and next door have always done it too. It's only on mn it's seen as an issue.

They should ask to come round and paint it.

It’s not just an MN thing though. It’s the UK law. You can google it quite easily.
LST · 10/08/2021 13:41

@MoonlightWanderer one that has never ever in all my life been followed by me, my neighbours or anyone I know closely in fact! It is literally only a problem I have ever seen on mn. As I have already stated.

No its not just mn issue its the law.

Your neighbour might not care lucky you but I would never chance it without asking permission from neighbour whether I can paint their fence. Otherwise if your neighbour did care they can take legal action.

LST · 10/08/2021 13:43

Again. Read my previous post. The fence between me and my neighbours currently is I think mine. Since we have been here both us and next door have painted their own sides. No issue! There were drips (shock fucking horror) that came through my side.. so you know what I did? Wiped them away

Yes or you put up your own fence like OP neighbour has done.

I'm doing the same, my neighbour fence is too low and they then had to chnage a post and its not the same color. Looks really ugly. Ill be putting my own fence up withij my property bounds alongside theirs to hide their ugly fence.

SheWoreYellow · 10/08/2021 13:57

@Bluntness100 and @Howshouldibehave

You both were pretty rude in your ‘where? Where does she say she can’t see over it?’

I think there was no need for that, even if I had been wrong.

And she did say “The original fences were 2m high, we could never see their fence unless we used a step or a ladder !”

So I took that to mean she couldn’t see over?

Laiste · 10/08/2021 19:07

@Homeontherangeuk

I have said countless times DH is measuring properly tomorrow
Any luck with DH and his measurements?

By the way it was twice. Hardly ''countless''. Tendency to exaggerate?

HeronLanyon · 10/08/2021 19:14

Omg op ! Forgot about this. Have you managed to measure today. Any clearer thoughts about what to do ?

ZeroFuchsGiven · 11/08/2021 14:12

It must be a lot taller than we all think if it is taking 2 days to measure Grin

Any updates on this, @Homeontherangeuk?!
