Neighbours have put panelling up on their did of the garden, it goes right up over our side of the fence & looks so ugly😢 what can we do our side to improve its appearance?

How tall have they made it as 2m is all that's legal without pp.

Kithic · 09/08/2021 11:43

Photo?

You could put a trellis on your side, no higher than the top of their fence, and grow climbing plants along it.

IME roses are too slow-growing. Clematis grows fairly fast, you can get various colours and flowering seasons, and even some scented ones. Honeysuckle smells good, too.

SheWoreYellow · 09/08/2021 11:45

Grow creepers up it?

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 09/08/2021 11:46

Same here, I have a 6 foot wall and hideous 2 foot panelling on top of that blocking all light from my garden and making it look like a prison compound without the barbed wire. So 9 foot in total, I only have a tiny courtyard.
I put a formal complaint in to the council planning and was told they can have it as it not solid fencing, I was livid, me and the neighbours put in an appeal and lost.
I'm supposed to be putting my house on the market but nobody will buy it like this.

This is the most discreet shot I could get.... We just had our garden done last year & loved our pink fence😢

I was thinking the same as because its not a solid fence & the existing fence still exists we would have no complaint as such... Its so ugly & I actually mentioned to DH its giving a prison vibe...

Paint a 2 foot trellis pink and get it put up..

Recycledblonde · 09/08/2021 11:56

Is your fence pink on their side? I would always prefer the higher fence as I like privacy and wouldn’t particularly like looking at a pastel pink fence. I’d rather have a natural wood fence.

Homeontherangeuk · 09/08/2021 11:59

We'll have to do something... I'm quite upset to be honest.. When we got our garden done last year next door messaged to ask us to take them into consideration when we did our planting as they loved their light... I said no problem what so ever... They told us they were erecting the panelling but never mentioned how it would effect us our side... I don't want to fall out with them or have a confrontation but I just want our side to look pretty again😢

No their side is painted a different coulour, they can't see our side. The natural wood is the colour or the panelling at the moment.

I think that's your best bet. I know it's maddening, but as a pp said, they've had to live with your pink on the other side, and probably disliked it as much as you dislike their fence.
saraclara · 09/08/2021 12:02

Oh - how did you manage to paint your side pink without it bleeding through on the other side?

ZeroFuchsGiven · 09/08/2021 12:02

Sorry op, no help at all but if my neighbour erected a pink fence on our boundary Id do what I could to cover the monstrosity. Not everyone likes pink!

Homeontherangeuk · 09/08/2021 12:03

But they can't see our pink unless they looked out the upstairs window! The original fences were 2m high, we could never see their fence unless we used a step or a ladder !

MoonlightWanderer · 09/08/2021 12:06

Oh, that is ugly!!

How high is the fence now? I thought they needed planning permission for anything over 2m, even if it’s just paneling or a trellis.

Homeontherangeuk · 09/08/2021 12:06

Very carefully! Thanks for all the advice, will look into our options. They are lovely neighbours so we don't want to fall our with them.
Ps this is the back garden & we already have lots of privacy so noone has to live with our pink except for us & we love it!

I think you have to have a chat with them. They probably have no idea how awful it looks from your side. You don't need to fall out with them over it but I do think you need to speak to them, especially as they asked you to be considerate when planting your garden.

MoonlightWanderer · 09/08/2021 12:08

Sorry, crossed posts. I’m pretty sure it’s not legal then. Do some Googling and maybe talk to them that it’s over height regulations.

It's over 3m.... I don't know the ends & out of planning but it stretches all the way down the garden... I don't want to go down that road as they are lovely just want to make our side presentable 😢

The only solution I can think of would be pleached hornbeam, but they are very pricey.

AmIEmptyOrNumB · 09/08/2021 12:09

@Homeontherangeuk. I know what you mean. I don't understand how people think you painted both sides 😂 Everyone paints their side whatever they want! Flowers

AmIEmptyOrNumB · 09/08/2021 12:10

Pink trellis and clematis montana will be your friends xxx

Technically, I don't think you are meant to paint a fence that doesn't belong to you. This argument comes up on MN fairly regularly where people are horrified that their neighbour has painted their side of the fence a different colour.
