Neighbours have put panelling up on their did of the garden, it goes right up over our side of the fence & looks so ugly😢 what can we do our side to improve its appearance?

Your own fence is no better. Its hideous.

AmIEmptyOrNumB · 09/08/2021 12:13

@SoupDragon. Had no idea!

Fluffycloudland77 · 09/08/2021 12:14

I don’t think that’s fence height is legal. I’d be gutted too.

Of course it is better because the neighbours aren't forced to look at it.

@Homeontherangeuk

This is the most discreet shot I could get.... We just had our garden done last year & loved our pink fence😢
Ours have done exactly this. At first I was really annoyed and considered reporting them to the planning people, as it breaches planning rules, but then I realised it at least meant we did t have to put him with looking over into our bathroom.

Just an aside, your fence is lovely. I wonder though, however careful you’ve been, it’s likely to have leaked onto their side. Could they be covering that.

CharlotteRose90 · 09/08/2021 12:15

Their allowed a 6ft fence which that looks like it is. I’d do the same. I hate low fences you have no privacy in your garden . Either put a trellis on it or get a taller fence and paint in pink. They won’t take it down and you have no right to ask them.

burritofan · 09/08/2021 12:15

I actually prefer their fence to yours, sorry. If theirs is 3m it’s too high, so you can shop em but it wouldn’t be good for relations. Either extend your pink fence with a panel, or go for clematis Montana as pp suggested, it grows like the clappers.

ThankyouPeter · 09/08/2021 12:16

Oh I would be really upset by that. It looks like your fence is already 6ft high from your photo? Adding a little bit of trellis to the top of one thing but that looks unacceptable. I would definitely send your photo to the council for advice. I thought 6ft was the maximum height for a fence and that looks like a fence to me.

ZeroFuchsGiven · 09/08/2021 12:16

It's over 3m

Are you sure you have your measurements right?

Whyemseeaye · 09/08/2021 12:16

I’d take your fencing down, (leave the posts) and paint the side that is in to garden a colour you like.
I’d also plant lots of nice climbers etc.

Can you pop round to neighbours and ask them to come and look what you’ve been left with.

It’s really inconsiderate but perhaps they weren’t happy being overlooked? Is your pink fence quite low?

ZeroFuchsGiven · 09/08/2021 12:17

It looks like yours is 4ft and they have gone to 6ft.

I've no intention of asking them to take it down! If you read my post you would see if asking for advice on how to disguise it on our side. I got some great replies thanks to all the kind mumsnetters that took time to read my posts.

If the pink fence is 4ft those are very narrow slats!
Gertie75 · 09/08/2021 12:20

That looks awful, if it was 6 ft before then I don't see why they've done it.
If they're as lovely as you say then be honest with them, explain you hate to complain and invite them round to see it from your garden.

saraclara · 09/08/2021 12:22

If it's 3m high it's illegal, in England at least. I didn't know you could even buy garden panels that size.

I know they're lovely neighbours, but you should still contact your local council and ask about it.

Don’t do this, you can’t paint their fence. If I were your neighbour and you painted my wooden fence pink and it seeped through I’d be furious.

CatM1nt · 09/08/2021 12:23

This happened to us.

You take yours down and put feathering up to covering the backside of the new fence. It will look better than you already have and then you can paint it pink.

Homeontherangeuk · 09/08/2021 12:23

On one hand the extra privacy is always a good thing. The issue is it just looks so ugly from our side but thats something we'll have to try & rectify ourselves... From what I can tell our light won't be affected🤞 it's just so unsightly at the moment..

I'm also fairly sure the pink fence is 6ft which I think makes a big difference.
Panickingpavlova · 09/08/2021 12:24

Actually whoever owns the boundary has the right to paint the fence.

saraclara · 09/08/2021 12:26

They will have needed planning permission for a fence that tall. And you would need to have been consulted.

Seriously, get in touch with the council

It didn't seep through!!! We asked numerous times when we painted & also offered to buy a tin of paint to cover if any leak happened!

OP can you clarify how tall your fence is as it makes quite a difference?

I was thinking the same thing. The op's fence looks quite low and the offending fence doesn't look that high. Certainly not 3m.
