Neighbours have put panelling up on their did of the garden, it goes right up over our side of the fence & looks so ugly😢 what can we do our side to improve its appearance?

I’d paint the top part pink, using loads of paint so it drips down in between the slats of their side Grin

Honestly, with a bit of clever planting and/or trellis you can make it look ok. But if it’s cutting out the light from your garden then they need to rethink it.

Could you invite them round for a bbq or something?! At least then they can see how awful it looks for themselves.

I think painting it a light colour would help the light issue a bit, but depending which side the sun shines from it could end up making your garden unusable if there’s no sunshine at all, which is not fair. They need to know how it’s affected you even if you tell them in a really polite and nice way.

My garden also looks a bit like a prison yard. Last year I started a mural which has really helped brighten it up - excuse dodgy selfie, it’s the only photo I have of it! (Never quite finished!) It’s still on my to do list. If you fancy a mural to disguise it a bit give me a shout Grin

I would paint it pale blue and greys so it blends with sky. Saw this Alan Titmarsh programme last week. Very effective. Put climbers on top.

HeronLanyon · 09/08/2021 23:28

Or you could paint it as trellis with climbing plants on it just until yours grow (only if it’s under 2m though!). Inspiration from shoelady above.

uktrippin · 09/08/2021 23:31

You can't start painting their fence 😂

3 metres? Doubt that but if you're right then it'll be over by October anyway

Howshouldibehave · 09/08/2021 23:32

What have they attached their panelling to?

Beecham · 09/08/2021 23:50

I would just plant lots of climbers. Clematis and rambling rose. If course they'll need a couple of years to really get going and spread.

There are some very vigorous roses that would be lovely in the summer eg: www.davidaustinroses.co.uk/products/minnehaha

You can't paint someone else's fence.
victoriaspongecake · 10/08/2021 00:41

Why have the added the extra fencing? Do they have a very large dog they are trying to contain? Or noisy children on trampolines they are trying to avoid? Just seems a high fence if you and them are good neighbours. ?

timeisnotaline · 10/08/2021 00:47

I don’t think they are that lovely if they expect you to plant carefully allowing for the impact on their garden then whack a great big 3m screen up. They should have planning permission. I’d plant whatever I wanted that’s for sure, and tell them it’s a fast growing tree to cover the huge fence they put up.

StrawberryPuff · 10/08/2021 01:13

Agree with trellis and clematis suggestion. But along the top of that loop some flashing fairy lights that definitely show over the top of the panel.

MoonlightWanderer · 10/08/2021 02:55

@SeasonFinale

To be fair your fence looks super short. Why aren't you answering when people ask how tall yours is? I suspect theirs is a standard height fence whereas yours is shorter. As stated before just top yours with trellis and plant some climbers.
She has said that her fence is 2 m and the paneling is 3 m but her husband will measure again tomorrow. Not sure how clearer the OP can get than that. Confused
cabbageking · 10/08/2021 03:16

You could take your fence down completely and run a washing line along the boundary. Peg up some pretty sheets or quilts for the summer whilst pot plants grow.

cabbageking · 10/08/2021 03:19

That's plants in pots and not cannabis

Justa47 · 10/08/2021 04:13

@Homeontherangeuk

3m Hugh fence is not allowed.
Go to your council

NoNotYou · 10/08/2021 08:18

@ZeroFuchsGiven

We both own our own homes but the panelling is on our side

How is it on your side? The pics show behind your fence/boundary. Confused

Please tell us the actual height of your fence op, I asked earlier and others have too but your neighbours fitting a 3m fence seems unreal and something I have never seen. Are You sure your fence is 2m?

OPs fence panels are less than 6 foot as they don't reach the top of the posts and they are not taller than they are wide.😀👌🏼 I suggest the OP keeps to the facts
Pinkywoo · 10/08/2021 08:33

Just to clarify, 3m is nearly 10ft, that's one massive fence!

Dreamstate · 10/08/2021 08:43

Alot of wrong advice on here.

Your neighbour is entitled to put up a fence next to yours so long as its not attached to your fence. Its int heir property boundary so nothing you can do about it.

Fences including trellis can only be max 2m high from their ground before you require planning permission.

You are not allowed to paint their fence or attach plants to it or anything else without their permission. Just like they cant paint your fence that faces them without your permission. Now people here might say just do it but you need permission.

I have same situation in my garden where neighbours fence is bot 6fr, they did their garden up and now have a raised patio and ive lost all my privacy. I'll be putting up a fence alongside theirs soon enough to get my privacy back.

Only thing you can do is attach trellis to the maximum 2m or replace your fence panels to ones that go up to 2m including your concrete bases.

Bluntness100 · 10/08/2021 08:53

I’m also thinking you’ve got your measurements wrong, can you stand next to the fence aith your face blanked out! That looks like a waist height fence to me, not a six foot one.

DismantledKing · 10/08/2021 08:54

@Homeontherangeuk

This is the most discreet shot I could get.... We just had our garden done last year & loved our pink fence😢
Bloody hell, how high is that new fence?
HeronLanyon · 10/08/2021 09:31

Waiting with baited breath for ops DH to use the measuring tape (or op for that matter but perhaps it is a ‘man thing’ ?!)

Grin Must be a blue job.
ThankyouPeter · 10/08/2021 09:51

Well while we wait for the official measurements, I've counted the slats in my 6ft fence and there are 18 which is the same as the OP's. I agree it looks smaller in the pictures but that could just be because if the monstrosity behind it. If I viewed a house with a 9ft fence it would make me think the relationship with the neighbours wasn't very good and it would put me off. Obviously context is everything and if the garden us the size of a field then it probably wouldn't bother me.

lastcall · 10/08/2021 10:04

If the fence is 3 meters now on their side (*measurement coming), then I would let them know that it's too high and it has to come down. You might not mind, but if you had to sell you home, it would be disliked by a lot of potential buyers, especially if it impacts light coming into your garden in the darker months.

Howshouldibehave · 10/08/2021 10:12

Have they slotted it into gravel boards/concrete posts?

HeronLanyon · 10/08/2021 10:19

thankyoupeter obvious and important analysis, forensic investigation and data gathering, there.
