Ideas to make the coming autumn lovelier ( or at least a little more bearable)

Labradabradorable · 08/08/2021 19:31

Looking out at the garden this evening I can see the light is a little more golden and the shadows a little longer. Autumn is around the corner, which I normally greatly look forward to on a hot late-August drive home through France, piled high with wine, well-read and dripping with idleness. I suspect this year’s bracing camping in Wales might just be a reminder of the rain and mud to come.

Any ideas to make the coming season a little nicer? So far I’ve come up with :

Blowing my birthday John Lewis voucher on a nice candle ( Diptyque Feu de Bois) and a couple of velvet scatter cushions
A houseplant for my bathroom window
Booking some riding lessons for all of us
Embracing the darker mornings and getting up early to walk the dog. Also, joining a beginners agility group.
Regular swimming and encouraging the kids to come too
A lovely bath foam ( I like L’Occitaine almond)
Buying good pyjamas and new boots
Planning some pretty woodland walks
Planning some good autumnal food (crumbles, stews)
If possible, doing a few days extra work and booking for DD and I to go to Paris. That might be wishful thinking as my summer energy ebbs.

Any other ideas welcome! 🍂

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 09/08/2021 20:39

I forgot gingerbread, whoever mentioned that - I have a lovely recipe from an ancient Mary Berry book - published 1970! It’s lethally moreish.

Making a big batch of Delia’s 5 star mincemeat, and a load of apple chutney from all the windfalls in dd’s garden. Must start saving jars!

BunnyRuddington · 09/08/2021 20:44

Whyemseeaye · 09/08/2021 21:20

The best thread on MN ❤️

Needhelp101 · 09/08/2021 21:43

Great thread!
Jo Malone used to do a great autumn candle but I can't remember the name, annoyingly.

Firebird83 · 09/08/2021 21:59

I have SAD so usually dread summer ending. This thread is really helpful for ideas to make autumn/winter more bearable!

SarahAndQuack · 09/08/2021 22:31
@SarahAndQuack FlowersStar thank you for wanting to research that area, it will always be so close to my heart.

And I hope this autumn brings you some positive job news!
What a lovely thing to say! I feel really encouraged now. Thank you for cheering me up.

SarahAndQuack · 09/08/2021 22:33

@Labradabradorable

SarahandQuack I hope autumn brings good news. I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you 🤞🏿
Thank you!

Now I shall go away and think about autumn leaves and smoke in the air and it'll feel much more hopeful. Smile

ZednotZee · 09/08/2021 22:39

Following because I hate September through December.

I'm a weirdo. My mood picks up in January.

I feel really anxious as soon as summer is over and need to put a positive spin on autumn.

Might join the gym for some endorphins.

ZednotZee · 09/08/2021 22:40

Oh and new scent!

All the heavy ones that can only be worn in cold weather!

Furries · 09/08/2021 22:52

Summer is my favourite season. I’m feeling VERY short-changed, it’s been totally pants where I am this year.

I’ve treated myself to a lovely new dressing gown from John Leis (found a voucher I’d forgotten about!). It’s really thick and soft, love it. My best purchase, a couple of years ago, was my heated faux fur throw from Lakeland. It’s about the only thing that gets me through autumn and winter. Oh, and my fleece duvet cover and sheet.

I’m going to make more of an effort this year with making stews, etc. And treating myself to some nice pies from the butchers.

Badgersdrift · 09/08/2021 23:00

I'm.going to try and knit some wrist warmers

Finish a patchwork quilt for dd starting uni (it's made out of her favourite children's clothes).

And every year I intend to start exercising and eating healthily when Strictly starts, keep going for the duration of the series, and lose some weight before Christmas. Have a reset period when they start training before the first dance off round. Weigh every Saturday. This year, instead of intending to do it, and not succeeding, I am going to go ahead!

I am.also going to totally shred, sort and organise the contents of the study and turn it in to a bolt hole for me!

Doghairismyglitter · 09/08/2021 23:55

I LOVE Autumn! My favourite time of year, I can already feel that slight nip in the air in the evenings and leaves are already falling, autumn is peeking it’s head out.
Slow cooker recipes, reading whilst the rain is pouring outside in the evening, putting the thick winter duvet on, cosy lighting of an evening, blanket on the sofa with the DC’s, hearty wholesome food… it’s bliss to me!
One thing though; can anyone recommend any socks that actually properly keep your feet warm? I have kidney disease and my circulation is awful, my feet are physically painful in the cold and I have yet to find any socks that actually warm them up!

I love Autumn. It's my favourite season.
I'm also very lucky to live rural and surrounded by woods and the scenery is breathtaking as the leaves all turn. Autumn walks are lovely..
I do an Autumn wreath on my door and also bought these to hang around my fireplace.

Getting orange little lights out for bedroom, orange case for my feather cushion, cosying with oodie I hope again soon. If my flushes will let me.

Boredmotherofone · 10/08/2021 00:51

Autumnal decorations - tasteful of course. TK Maxx can help you out with this

MotionActivatedDog · 10/08/2021 00:51

Not sure if this is the sort of thing you mean but I’m going go through my wardrobe this week and put together a winter capsule wardrobe, discard what doesn’t fit or is too worn and replace with some nice new layers. All a ploy to make me pretend the mornings are easy peasy because I have my outfit already selected Grin

Allhallowseve · 10/08/2021 07:05

Last year we went to a local gardens and picked the last apples off the trees then came home and made apple crumble. That felt a lovely end to summer/ start of autumn.
Iv just ordered some new boots ready thanks to this thread. On the lookout for a nice coat now.

We are having a bathroom refit so I'm looking forward to some bubble baths , candles , strictly on the tv and takeaways.

Roast dinners, with lots of root veg and pudding !
Halloween and bonfires. Because of lockdown last year (and we were recovering from COVID). we did trick or treat in our garden we have a play house and couple of outbuildings . We hid in the outbuildings and the kids came and knocked . We lit up the garden and decorated. The kids absolutely loved it more than any other year so we may do that again .

CarolinaWeeper · 10/08/2021 07:19

I adore Autumn. I think it's about embracing the changing of the seasons, the world doing what it needs to do despite the craziness of the past 18 months, appreciating that I'm here to see another changing of the seasons when so many aren't.

I'm looking forward to:

Wrapping up warm and exploring National Trust places.
Hot drinks in a new mug.
Using the slow cooker more.
Baking cinnamon buns with the children.
Meeting friends in coffee shops.
Curling up with a book when it's all warm inside.
Sitting with a cup of tea and watching the rain.
Pumpkin picking with the DC.
Blankets on the sofa and candles around the fireplace.
Looking up new autumnal recipes to try.
Making ahead food for Christmas...... Christmas pudding, sloe gin etc.
Red wine in the evening.

Rainallnight · 10/08/2021 07:22

Lovely ideas.

Every year I say I’m going to visit Westonbirt Arboretum in the autumn and never do. Maybe this will be the year?
