@Sparklingbrook Life was mad in the 50s. Basically we had to knit an oblong, sew in a lining and then fold it in 3 so you had a doubled over bit sewn up at the side and the other third was the flap on the front of the pencil case. Amazingly most 7 year olds, boys and girls, seemed to do OK but mine was a disaster. I think part of it was I was so unhappy and intimidated by her that I couldn't actually get anything right. I so remember the feeling of utter despair and I would just start to cry which just made her really angry. She didn't need to shout or anything in the end, she had made my life so awful that I couldn't cope.

My parents took me out of that school and I was perfectly happy at the next one so I don't think it was me. She just hated me.

Me too. I can't knit. I did try when I was much younger, but was just so crap at it! Have you tried crochet, I'm pretty good at that. I think I have a mental block about knitting because of Miss Pierce. Maybe I should try again. It might be therapeutic.

No I haven't tried crochet? Maybe I will. Smile

Interesting that a derail about Harry Styles, complete with several photos, was not only allowed by MNHQ, but was indulged by the same posters who bristled at the idea of anyone talking about anything other than Tom Daley’s knitting.

We were also forced to do stuff in school that not all of us were good at.

I was better at drawing and writing stories than 'craft' stuff!

There was no derail. The subject of the thread was knitting. Harry Styles came up due to him wearing a knitted cardigan, A poster said they had indeed knitted the Harry Styles cardigan.

Oh do give over FGS. As if a few posters talking about how much they like Harry Styles, is the same as several people trying to derail the thread with nasty comments about Tom Daley and (according to them,) his dreadful act of forcing a poor woman to be his surrogate.

You derailers are getting super desperate now. Aren't you bored yet? Coz you're boring the rest of us. Change the record FGS.

Sparklingbrook · 08/08/2021 00:02

@ancientgran I can tell from your posts how much that teacher affected you, and you can vividly remember the knitted pencil case.

Men who take up women’s activities are welcomed by women because they are upping the status of it.

It’s kind of irritating but credit where credit’s due. He’s an amazing knitter.

True. Smile

So there you have it, you can now chat about surrogates - or anyone else, other than Tom and his cuddly knitting, as long as there's a cardigan involved.

Warmduscher · 08/08/2021 00:13

Yes, knitting. Not surrogacy, but knitting. Exactly.
Sparklingbrook · 08/08/2021 00:20

WTF is 'cuddly' knitting? Confused

ArcheryAnnie · 08/08/2021 00:21

Millions of women knitting over centuries: ~crickets.

One young man knitting: OMG he's the best thing ever!

Very bored with men getting lauded for doing perfectly ordinary things that women do all the time.

Have you RTFT?

Don’t be daft. The derail is the change in tone and spirit. Tom Daley and his use of surrogacy is a whole lot more serious than Harry Styles and his cardy.

Some derails are more equal than others, it seems.

But people were making out he’s some kind of perfect specimen as a man, top bloke etc....when he has done something very controversial, it’s going to come up on a thread about him. That’s how chat in public forums work. You might not like it but it is.

If some posters are saying how lovely he is, I don’t think it’s unreasonable to point out that actually, he’s done something which many people would find immoral I agree

PandemicAtTheDisco · 08/08/2021 00:47

I saw a clip and it looked like he was crocheting not knitting?

He does both.

Yes, Sparklingbrook, I have RTFT, and am agreeing with some other posters. Tom Daley isn't "smashing gender norms", as some other poster said. He's doing what men have always done: whatever they bloody want, and getting lauded like a bloody saint for it, whatever it is that they've chosen to do.
