Does anyone actually only wear their clothes for ten times?!

There are so many adverts at the minute that have me shouting/muttering/cringing/scoffing at the telly that it’s difficult to pick one to moan about! But the vanish one has just been on - the one that says, on average, clothes are worn ten times before being thrown out

Who does that?! I don’t know anyone who does. I definitely don’t - I have clothes that go back 20 years (I can’t get into them mind, but that’s another story!)

Good god I keep them for years and wear them hundreds of times, basically until they're too far gone to be presentable. I did once know a guy who never washed his shirts, he'd wear them until they got dirty then throw them out and buy new ones.

M0rT · 02/08/2021 23:54

I haven't seen the ad but that is insane! The only clothes I have bought that would get that little wear are outfits for occasions.
Even then they are usually loaned out a few times and kept for the next time they fit/are in fashion!

Holothane · 02/08/2021 23:58

No some of mine are years old, good grief, my latest t shirts will fall to bits before they thrown.

nancy75 · 02/08/2021 23:58

No, that’s madness! My daughter went out today in a dress I bought about 25 years ago ( I don’t keep everything I’ve ever owned, this was one of those can’t stand to part with it but no hope of fitting in it items!)

GrasssInPocket · 03/08/2021 00:22

My daughter regularly wears a pair of jeans I saved from the 80s! and they look better on her than they ever did on me

SuperSecretSquirrels · 03/08/2021 00:26

Most things I wear until they fall apart, and then I mend them. However somehow I still end up with at least 1 bin bag full of stuff for the charity shop or for eBay each year. Just stuff that either doesn’t fit properly or I no longer want to wear.

StiffyByng · 03/08/2021 00:26

The top I wore today has lots of holes in the lower part of it but because it’s black and blends into most of my bottom halves I only really noticed how bad it was as I took it off. It really needs to be thrown out but I was telling myself it was still new - it’s around 8 years old.

EBearhug · 03/08/2021 00:30

I have posh dresses I probably haven't worn that many times (but then they've not gone to a charity shop, either.) There have been clothes I've only worn a couple of times and realised I don't like after all, so they go to charity, but the majority of things I wear till they literally wear out and I can't mend them any more.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 03/08/2021 00:35

My favourite shirt that I sometimes wear to work is older than some of my colleagues. I suspect it has been worn several hundred times.

allfurcoatnoknickers · 03/08/2021 00:38

I've probably passed on a few things that have been worn less than 10 time, but they don't end up in the bin Shock.

I have loads of clothes, but I also tend to keep them for years. I've got a Boden jumper I bought in 2008 that's still going strong.

BananaMilkshakeWithCream · 03/08/2021 07:01

I reckon the only thing I’ve worn less than 10 times is my wedding dress. Who makes these statistics??!!

Hissysnake · 03/08/2021 07:07

It's on average. So all the people who keep clothes from when the pyramids were built are being evened out by the people who buy a million things from primark, never wear them and chuck them out with the tags still on them.

I'm somewhere in the middle. I don't keep stuff until it's falling apart. Generally, I get fed up with things after a year or two and then chuck them. So yes, I probably have some stuff I've worn less than ten times, but I have plenty of stuff I've worn more than that too. Doesn't help last year that I ditched all my smarter clothes due to permanently WFH.

LemonRoses · 03/08/2021 07:15

I certainly have clothing items I’ve worn fewer than ten times, but it’s formal or evening wear generally and I wouldn’t put vanish anywhere near them.
Ordinary clothing gets good usage over several years. I but things to last.

Intherightplace · 03/08/2021 07:16

Hmm. I wear the everyday things I like much more, for years and years.

However, I do have special occasion things that don't get worn much and I have had many unsuccessful purchases that have been discarded barely worn and definitely things DC had "for best" when they were little wouldn't have had 10 wears before being outgrown. So on average....? I'd still be surprised if it's only 10 times, but not every item PP bought in the 80s is still being worn! Plus of course there's all the cheap stuff sold that genuinely doesn't last much more than 10 washes.

Rangoon · 03/08/2021 07:17

I keep most of my clothes till they fall apart and are no longer mendable. Sometimes though if I have made a dreadful mistake I get rid of the mistake to a charity shop. Right now, hanging up in our spare room is a coat. I am slightly above average height and a skinny size 8. The coat which is cream and belted makes me look chunky and short. I know it has to go. I wasn't going to wash it in Vanish though.

Rainbowsew · 03/08/2021 07:20

I thought this too! Wear stuff for years and years!
Apart from the odd special occasion out fit. Even wore my wedding dress more than once!!

MattyGroves · 03/08/2021 07:21

I have some clothing that is 20 years old and some that I wore less than 10 times before getting rid of it - basically sometimes I make mistakes and buy something I later realise doesn't suit me

countrygirl99 · 03/08/2021 07:22

I have a couple of occasion wear items that get worn less than 10 times because I don't go to enough occasions. But I'm currently wearing a Lowe Alpine top that I bought in 1998 and wear a lot and 3 yo joggers that I wear 10 times a month.

Disfordarkchocolate · 03/08/2021 07:24

If I like it I wear it. If I don't like it then it does to a charity shop. Very few clothes get thrown out none after 10 wears.

kowari · 03/08/2021 07:24

I understand some people have many 'outfits' they wear once or twice, but they wouldn't then be thrown out would they? They'd be sold or passed on.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 03/08/2021 07:26

10x and it’s still brand new.

I wear clothes til they fall apart. How wasteful are we?

BikeRunSki · 03/08/2021 07:26

Op, I don’t think this thread is going to attract any of the people who wear their clothes a handful of times before getting rid. I know 2 or 3 people like this though.

AlmostSummer21 · 03/08/2021 07:27

Other than things like the Olympics, I watch pretty much everything pre recorded, mainly so I don't have to watch/hear stupid adverts!!

What a lot of rubbish!!

Arsebucket · 03/08/2021 07:30

Christ, most of my clothes are over 10 years old!

I can only dream of having the cash to wear things a few times.

Nitgel · 03/08/2021 07:31

I have a few things that I've had to throw out as lve saved them and are now too fat fo waer them.
