Does anyone actually only wear their clothes for ten times?!

There are so many adverts at the minute that have me shouting/muttering/cringing/scoffing at the telly that it’s difficult to pick one to moan about! But the vanish one has just been on - the one that says, on average, clothes are worn ten times before being thrown out

Who does that?! I don’t know anyone who does. I definitely don’t - I have clothes that go back 20 years (I can’t get into them mind, but that’s another story!)

Yeah, that's crazy! I keep and wear my clothes for yearsss. Apart from maybe special dresses etc which probably do end up being worn less than 10 times over the years and eventually let go of. But I talking 2-3 dresses every 10-20 years tbh 😂

LaurieFairyCake · 03/08/2021 08:38

I've probably got about 20 weddingy outfits/posh outfits I've only worn once

They really need to go to a charity shop

Sunshineandflipflops · 03/08/2021 08:39

I am currently wearing a t-shirt that is approx 10 years old. I find it difficult to find clothes I really like so I hang onto them when I do!

Anonymouslyposting · 03/08/2021 08:41

I think my clothes split into things I wear once a couple of times (either fancy dresses or things I realise I shouldn’t have bought as they don’t work on me) or things I wear until they fall apart. So I’d say an average use of 10 times seems low but could be right - it’s either once or hundreds!

MrsSkylerWhite · 03/08/2021 08:42

That’s shocking. I usually wear our kids’ hand me downs for a good 5 years (after they’ve worn them for at least 2, both adults now)

groovergirl · 03/08/2021 08:46

Ha, OP, perhaps I can set a MN record. I have New Wave clothes from 1981 (my own creations; it was a very DIY movement) plus a few of my mum's 1960s pieces -- and I still wear them! (Clearly I don't care about being cheugy. Grin) Everything else gets worn to shreds then chopped up for patchwork, or consigned to my archives for later use. Where I live, charity shopping is huge among teenagers, so fingers crossed it means more wear per item and less going to landfill.

BTW, Vanish is actually quite good. And no, I don't work for the company.

Oblomov21 · 03/08/2021 08:47

What? Nonsense.

Yes, I do too. My DS's age 12 Boden jeans are a good fit in all but length (I'm 5ft 5) but everyone's going about in too short jeans at the moment!
Serenissima21 · 03/08/2021 08:49

Today I'm wearing a tshirt I bought 30 years ago. I think it must be magic or something as it doesn't seem to have aged a bit, unlike me!

Arsebucket · 03/08/2021 09:00

@Nitgel

Do you all stay the same size ?
No. But i mainly live in cheap leggings and t shirts which have seen me from a 22 to a 16 just fine.

Yes, I look shit but that’s my lot.

JammyDozen · 03/08/2021 09:03

Explains why everyday basics like T-shirts tend to be so poor quality, doesn’t it. Wash them more than a handful of times and some of them are virtually transparent, as well as much smaller.

It’s a false economy, as well as being wasteful. I buy heavy-weight tops now which last, but when I was short on money I wouldn’t have felt able to.

HelgaDownUnder · 03/08/2021 09:03

Some teenagers do this. By the time you reach adulthood most people know what they like and don't impulse buy based in fashion. I have a cupboard full of nearly identical clothes, which is ok, because that's all I wear. When I was 17 I was always buying new dresses and outfits, many of whIch were hardly worn.
That age group can be disorganised so they might be less likely to donate too.
I'd be a bit Hmm about an adult coming home with bags of random clothes, but I can understand a teen.

Livpool · 03/08/2021 09:11

Not a chance! I keep mine too long - to the point they have holes in!

I use old t shirts and vests for bed when they are too scruffy to wear as clothes

DoTheNextRightThing · 03/08/2021 09:14

No! I have clothes that are over a decade old. I'll wear everything until it falls apart.

Parrotanne · 04/08/2021 19:42

I forgot about this thread, sorry Blush.

I definitely don’t stay the same size but that doesn’t stop me hanging on to the clothes that will one day (in my dreams) fit me once more.

And previous posters have reminded me that I too have some clothes that my now late dm wore in the sixties!

Will this be according to some poll on the internet?
I have lots of clothes older than my children.

lljkk · 04/08/2021 19:47

adult teen DD... I'm sure she has bought stuff she only wore 2 or 3 x before chucking it.

She has favourites she wears repeatedly, too.

Theworldisquiethere · 04/08/2021 19:49

I buy most of my clothes second hand anyway but stuff either gets sent back to charity shops if I no longer want them, worn til they’re literally falling apart at the seams (but even then some charity shops can make money from them), or worn until they mysteriously disappear. I recently found a single sock that I’ve owned for more than 15 years, haven’t seen the matching sock for at least 12 years…

LysistrataVickers · 04/08/2021 20:02

No way! This reminds me of my beloved vest top RIP sniff .

It was a lovely pinky purple and thick material and I wore it so much it fell apart (partly due to age) I bought it from C&A in 1997 when I was 16 and it eventually fell apart in 2018. It even stretched from my size 8 teenage self to my size 12 30 something self. It was THAT good!

My DH has a jumper my parents bought him for his 20th birthday. He will be 72 this year!

I have a sleeveless T shirt that is nearly 40 years old. Very faded but not a bobble in sight.
