Do you say 'Goodnight God Bless' at bedtime?

I was just speaking to my dad on the phone and when he said goodbye he said 'Goodnight God Bless'

I haven't heard anyone say that since I was a kid it bought back some nostalgic feelings about being tucked up in bed! It would always be the last thing I heard at night until I left home so really bought back some memories.

Is this a usual Goodnight for kids? Do you say it or is it unique to my mum and dad?

We're not religious in the slightest so no. We say 'Goodnight DS, sleepy time'

StarDanced · 01/08/2021 21:44

I don't say it to my children, but my dad still says it to me on the phone which I love. Also reminds me of my childhood.

tiredanddangerous · 01/08/2021 21:46

No because I don't believe in God.

BingBongToTheMoon · 01/08/2021 21:47

No, we’re not a religious family.

NannyR · 01/08/2021 21:48

My mum and dad used to say that to me (and still do!).

Orangeinmybluelightcup · 01/08/2021 21:48

I think it was quite normal for that generation. Not really in my house and I don't say it to my kids, not religious.

FreshFancyFrogglette · 01/08/2021 21:49

No, I say "good night, sleep tight", each to their own though. And it's nice to have nice memories associated with it :)

Wtfdidwedo · 01/08/2021 21:49

I don't but my parents and grandparents did, not religious either, just in the Welsh valleys where "Chapel" type sayings were probably passed down.

Xmasbaby11 · 01/08/2021 21:50

No, we aren't religious.

Workinghardeveryday · 01/08/2021 21:51

We sat sweet dreams god bless 😊

Workinghardeveryday · 01/08/2021 21:51

Say

Yoyooo · 01/08/2021 21:52

I think it is a generational thing - I don't say it to my DC even though it was said to me nightly. With my DC now it is just 'Good night love you'

My Dad always said that. My sister put it into his funeral eulogy.

Doesn't "goodbye" mean "God be with you," - much the same thing

Inastatus · 01/08/2021 21:54

My mum and dad always said this to me and my sister. It was my final goodbye to my dear Dad. However I have never said it to my two DC.

dementedma · 01/08/2021 21:55

My mum used to say " Goodnight, sweet dreams"

DrMadelineMaxwell · 01/08/2021 21:56

God Bless was said by my uncle to my Dad's coffin at his funeral and it's written on his gravestone.

Every night as children we'd say
Good night.
God bless.
Sweet dreams.
See you in the morning.

Totally not a religious family, it was just handed down from his parents to mine and to us.

I went with g'night, sweet dreams, see you in the morning with our dds.

mrsrichardsglasses · 01/08/2021 21:57

We just say "sweet dreams, love you, see you in the morning, night night" which DD repeats over and over as I go downstairs Grin
My grandad always said god bless and I'd forgotten about it until I read this. Now I feel a bit teary, it's a very comforting saying.

I'm not religious at all, born Irish catholic, but I say it at the end of a phone convo or saying goodnight/goodbye! Must be an Irish thing all my lot say it!

MuchTooTired · 01/08/2021 22:01

I have a little mini speech that I say nightly to mine, DS likes to finish the end.

My mum always used to say sweet dreams, god bless. Quite funny thinking of it now, as she’s an atheist 😂

SingingWaffleDoggy · 01/08/2021 22:03

I say “if I see you out of that bed one more time…..” Grin
I’d like to say the last thing I say is goodnight, I love you, but that comes earlier on in the evening!

stayathomer · 01/08/2021 22:04

I'd say that yes, or bless, or god bless. There's times it slips out and once I've gotten the impression it pissed someone off but it's a habit (I'm 41 and believe in god and heaven but not gigantically religious, it'smore it was said to me by my parents and also I find it kind of comforting!)

NeonJellyBaby · 01/08/2021 22:04

My Nanna used to say it. She’d be over a hundred now if still alive, also from a Welsh chapel background though not especially religious.

PullTheWeeds · 01/08/2021 22:05

My dad still says it to my children, my mum has ever said it, my dad is religious and my mum isn't it. We don't say it to our children, we say 'night night, love u'.
