Do you say 'Goodnight God Bless' at bedtime?

I was just speaking to my dad on the phone and when he said goodbye he said 'Goodnight God Bless'

I haven't heard anyone say that since I was a kid it bought back some nostalgic feelings about being tucked up in bed! It would always be the last thing I heard at night until I left home so really bought back some memories.

Is this a usual Goodnight for kids? Do you say it or is it unique to my mum and dad?

@mrsrichardsglasses

We just say "sweet dreams, love you, see you in the morning, night night" which DD repeats over and over as I go downstairs Grin My grandad always said god bless and I'd forgotten about it until I read this. Now I feel a bit teary, it's a very comforting saying.
Yes that's the word - it is very comforting. It threw me a little when I heard it. Feels like a little cuddle 🥰

Ugh, no.

I normally say sweaty dreams :o

TheAwfuITruth · 01/08/2021 22:05

When I was a kid it was

'Na night, god bless'

Now to my kids it's,

'Na night, sleep tight. Sweet dreams, see you in the morning'

Findmeatthebeach · 01/08/2021 22:05

This is so strange. As I left my 9 year olds room this evening I said 'goodnight, God bless.' my parents still say that to me now (not religious) but I've never said it to my children until tonight when it just popped out. And now here is a thread about just that!

AsanteSana · 01/08/2021 22:06

In Swahili - usiku mwema, lala salama, Mungu akubariki = good night, sleep peacefully, God bless you

MrsCrosbyNRTB · 01/08/2021 22:06

My Scottish Catholic granny always said this to us when we were little. Aw. Nice memories Smile

SaveWaterDrinkGin · 01/08/2021 22:06

My parents said it (and still do) to all of us and my older siblings say it but it’s just occurred to me reading your thread that I never say it to my kids. We’re not a religious family at all, but I guess it was said to my parents when they were children. It gives me the warm and fuzzies when my dad says it to me Smile

IveGotASongThatllGetOnYNerves · 01/08/2021 22:07

My mum did sometimes I think.

I'm more of a "for god's sake will you put a sock in it and go to bloody bed, it's the middle of the damned night and I'm knackered, you gits!" type of mother

gogohm · 01/08/2021 22:08

Good night. Sleep tight don't let the bed bugs bite - if what was passed down to me. Dp also says it

BelleClapper · 01/08/2021 22:09

This gave me a start. My dad would always say goodnight, god bless. His mum, my nana, was welsh.

It morphed into a song, good night, sleep tight, see you in the morning, god bless.

Not religious at all by the way.
MotionActivatedDog · 01/08/2021 22:10

My nana says god bless. She even writes it in our birthday cards. She’s a devout catholic.

We aren’t so we say “night night, love you.” And sometimes “have a good sleep” which is a joke from when my eldest was small and would get up after being in bed for 30 seconds and tell me he “had a good sleep” so was getting up now Grin

MavisBeaconTeachesTaiChi · 01/08/2021 22:11

My DF always used to say it to us - I think his parents must have said it to him. It was the last thing he said to me, as I left him to sleep in hospital, and I said it back automatically. Night night, God bless. I'm glad I didn't have to think too hard about last words, but that they ended up being those.

Itsbeen84yearss · 01/08/2021 22:11

I think I said it tonight to dd7. I’m not particularly religious but I do say a little prayer with her every night after story. My mum did with me too when I was small.

BrilliantBetty · 01/08/2021 22:11

Not said here. I remember a friend's parent saying it to us when I went there for sleepovers as a kid. I didn't know the saying at the time, thought it was a little odd but nice. I liked staying there.

Fairyfalls · 01/08/2021 22:12

Aw getting emotional too yes my dad used to say it when I was little. He is Irish Catholic.

FluffMagnet · 01/08/2021 22:13

Ahh this made my grandmother's voice pop into my head! Parents, grandparents and I'm sure my sister's godmother used to say this to us as children and now again to my children. I guess we were a vaguely religious family (Christmas and Easter sorts), but from the above people we've got CoE, Methodists and a Catholic, plus backgrounds from SE, E and NW England.

Heatherington · 01/08/2021 22:20

Yes! My (fairly religious) parents said it to me.

I say all kinds of nice stuff to DS. DD usually gets something along the lines of ‘I told you to turn your light out hours ago!’

HermioneKipper · 01/08/2021 22:20

Oh that just made me flash back to childhood. My Nan always used to say this to me, if I talked to her on the phone or I stayed at her house. Ahhh my lovely Nan ❤️

I don’t say it to my children though

Clawdy · 01/08/2021 22:20

None of my family were religious and no one ever went to church, but my mum, gran and aunties all used to say " Night, God bless!"

NotMyCat · 01/08/2021 22:20

My gran would say it to us. It's on my younger cousins memorial Sad (33)

Inastatus · 01/08/2021 22:22

@SingingWaffleDoggy

I say “if I see you out of that bed one more time…..” Grin I’d like to say the last thing I say is goodnight, I love you, but that comes earlier on in the evening!
😂 I can relate to thar
Inastatus · 01/08/2021 22:22

that

Abracadabra12345 · 01/08/2021 22:26

Yes, we say goodnight God bless

goddessofmischief · 01/08/2021 22:28

We're not religious but when DD still had family members left (not my side) Scouse lapsed catholic, it was a staple "goodnight, god bless".
