Do you say 'Goodnight God Bless' at bedtime?

I was just speaking to my dad on the phone and when he said goodbye he said 'Goodnight God Bless'

I haven't heard anyone say that since I was a kid it bought back some nostalgic feelings about being tucked up in bed! It would always be the last thing I heard at night until I left home so really bought back some memories.

Is this a usual Goodnight for kids? Do you say it or is it unique to my mum and dad?

We say love you with all my fart . Sweet dreams. 😘

SusannahSophia · 01/08/2021 23:41

We used to say,
‘Good night, sleep tight,
don’t let the fleas bite,
see you in the morning when the sun shines bright,
nos da, bonne nuit, gute nacht, good night.’

I think it started off with the first line and just grew!

Strokethefurrywall · 01/08/2021 23:43

Yes I say it to both my kids, my mum said it to us. I’m not religious (spiritual) but it always felt lovely when my mum said it so I guess it’s habitual.

Wallywobbles · 01/08/2021 23:44

Ah that bought back memories of my dad. He used to say it when he said goodbye to us.

sandgrown · 01/08/2021 23:45

My mum always said it to me and I occasionally said it to my children. It’s a sweet saying .

Melroses · 01/08/2021 23:48

Night night, sleep tight; mind the bugs don't bite x

VienneseWhirligig · 01/08/2021 23:55

My nan always used to say it when she left my granddad's graveside when I was a child (she went almost every day when she picked me up from primary school as we had to walk past the churchyard on the way home), and I seem to have picked it up. I'm not religious at all but if I visit a family grave I will say that when I leave, and when I visit the place I scattered DH's ashes. And also at funerals - I found myself touching SIL's coffin and saying it the other week, and did the same for DH.

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 01/08/2021 23:55

I'm religious but no. Normally it's "Goodnight - love you - see you in the morning."

Agree with @mrsrichardsglasses that it goes on and on down the stairs with my (still young) DD!

noblegreenk · 02/08/2021 00:04

I don't say it to my daughter (as I'm atheist and therefore it wouldn't mean much) but I do remember that my nan would say it to me when I stayed at hers as a child.

Summerfun54321 · 02/08/2021 00:08

My gran used to say it to us when we stayed at hers as a child “na night, god bless”. It’s brought a tear to my eye remembering that. Thanks for sharing OP, it’s nice to remember the little things.

I'm American, so it was never really a thing in my neck of the woods. Though my mum is from Ireland. She and her siblings all came into the States in the 1960s. They never said anything like God bless or bless at ANY time. And they were front pew church goers growing up in Kilkenny. It wasn't until I moved over here and heard it that I thought, "That's a very Irish thing." My Irish family is very unIrish in many ways. Maybe they lost their charms and ways somewhere along the Atlantic crossing. Who knows?
But I used to know a lovely lady here in London, originally from Liverpool, who used to say it to her grandkids. Good night, God bless. It's got a very warm, cozy, granny vibe to it. Smile

Yed

KatherineJaneway · 02/08/2021 00:17

Yes even

Hen2018 · 02/08/2021 00:19

No, none of us believes in God.

You're right, it was always a na night too for us too. This is giving me the warm and fuzzies 🥰

My mum always said it. It meant a lot when she was in the final days of her life that her named night carer at her residential home said it to her every night too.

My DS says “goodnight, god bless, love you all the way to Budapest, I’m gonna get some rest and not be a pest”

My grandparents used to say this to me each night I stayed at there's before bed so I appreciate the nostalgia hit you just gave me

NoddyMcdoddy · 02/08/2021 01:10

As a kid growing up in Ireland most goodbyes were finished with God bless. Even now, completely none religious I find myself occasionally saying ‘ God bless’ to family members. It’s just habit.

As kids Dad would tuck us in after we had given mum a kiss downstairs and he would say ‘ night night sleep tight, God bless’
My parents were not particularly religious yet God bless featured regularly.
I don’t believe in God yet still find it weirdly comforting.

Mockolate · 02/08/2021 01:29

My Nanna says it, still does Smile
Brings back childhood memories of staying over.
I personally usually say night night love you though

DustyMaiden · 02/08/2021 01:33

My DM said “night night sleep tight, mind the bugs don’t bite, if they do squeeze them tight, they’ll not come another night.”

I don't say that, but you've reminded me of my Nanna. Whenever she tucked us in, she would say "Goodnight, God bless, Nanny's Angel" with a kiss in between each bit.
(And I have something in my eye now... )

magicstar1 · 02/08/2021 09:17

My mother still says it to me on the phone.

BeyondMyWits · 02/08/2021 09:27

Sweet dreams my honey bee...

(apparently honey bees are nice but buzzy bees are not)
