Do you say 'Goodnight God Bless' at bedtime?

I was just speaking to my dad on the phone and when he said goodbye he said 'Goodnight God Bless'

I haven't heard anyone say that since I was a kid it bought back some nostalgic feelings about being tucked up in bed! It would always be the last thing I heard at night until I left home so really bought back some memories.

Is this a usual Goodnight for kids? Do you say it or is it unique to my mum and dad?

Just thinking of that phrase has immediately transported me back to the box room at my Grandma's house (that I always thought of as "my room") with its Care Bear posters , super snuggly duvet and view out to see. She always said "goodnight, god bless" when she came to tuck me in.

FunnyWonder · 01/08/2021 22:31

We used to say to DS1 'Night night, don't let the bedbugs bite'. He would reply with 'And if I see them coming, I'll shoot the boots off them'. No idea where that riposte came from! Tried keeping up the tradition with DS2 and he just looked at us as if we were mad! So he just gets 'Nighty night'.

Azure · 01/08/2021 22:36

That's also made me a little teary. My mum used to say it right up to the end. She passed away 19 months ago.

Ifonlyiweretaller · 01/08/2021 22:37

Our parents said it when we were little, and now as a joke we say "goodnight, cobblers"Grin

LittleCatDog · 01/08/2021 22:41

Aww my Nan always said it to us, I'd forgotten Smile good memories!

IJustLikeBiscuitsOK · 01/08/2021 22:45

We say "night night, don't let the bed bugs bite!" although I remember when I was a kid, my babysitter said goodnight god bless to me every time she looked after me, happy memories.

ChubbyMsSunshine · 01/08/2021 22:45

My family never have but it's a familiar phrase albeit one I haven't heard for years.

I've started a new tradition with my DS - "see you on [insert tomorrow's day of the week]" ie tonight we said "see you on Monday". Trying to teach him the days of the week plus it's become a comforting part of our bedtime routine Smile

IJustLikeBiscuitsOK · 01/08/2021 22:46

Well, I should clarify, we start with that. It usually ends with "for God's sake, will you just go to sleep!?" hours after the initial goodnight haha.

OP, that's the spookiest thing reading your thread tonight (I don't mean your thread is spooky in itself, I mean that I was discussing this very same thing with my dad about an hour ago on the phone!)
My late and dearly beloved grandma used to say this all the time to us as kids. It's on her headstone now! Also every family member on her side has it on their headstone too. It's a very important phrase to us and I often wondered if anyone else ever said it. I sometimes say it to my DC too, it's comforting and feels like we keep the connection going.

Thecomfortador · 01/08/2021 22:53

Gosh yes, my parents used to say this, dad also said god bless babies. Neither parent is religious, my mum probably had more of a religious upbringing though.

I tend to be exhaustedly repeating, it's bed time, I'm tired and no I'm not making more food, shut your eyes please. Should probably aim for something a little more comforting and friendly maybe Sad

ParkheadParadise · 01/08/2021 22:55

I've seen Goodnight God bless on several headstones in my local cemetery.

CatherineMorland · 01/08/2021 22:56

Yes, I say it most nights to DC.

TigersandTeddybears · 01/08/2021 22:59

I say some combination of good night, sweet dreams, love you and sleep tight to my kids. We are not a religious household

SisterMonicaJoansHabit · 01/08/2021 22:59

Nope. In our home, we say goodbye to each other at bedtime, and I like to slip in a 'have a nice time', or 'it was lovely to see you'. I think the one which went down the best was, 'see you next week'.

The sort of thing we are aware others would be a bit Hmm about and kept quiet until a month ago when a friend on fb mentioned he says it to his partner at bedtime (goodbye - not the rest).

TigersandTeddybears · 01/08/2021 23:01

One of my DC always says "Goodbye until the morning" which I love

jaundicedoutlook · 01/08/2021 23:01

We say ‘oyasuminasai’ or ‘for ‘god’s sake just get to bed’ depending on how intransigent DDs are being of an evening.

Dementedswan · 01/08/2021 23:06

We say, goodnight, love you, see you in the morning.

SweatyBetty20 · 01/08/2021 23:11

We still do, for us it was always “ ‘Night God bless, see you in the morning”. My mum’s mum wasn’t catholic so she wouldn’t say it, she preferred “nighty nighty” and we had to reply with “pyjama pyjama”.

DramaAlpaca · 01/08/2021 23:13

@TheAwfuITruth

When I was a kid it was

'Na night, god bless'

Now to my kids it's,

'Na night, sleep tight. Sweet dreams, see you in the morning'

Exactly the same here Smile
GingerAndTheBiscuits · 01/08/2021 23:15

When DD6 was about three she went through a phase of saying “merry Christmas, happy new year and Gaaaawd bless!” every night for about six months.

merryhouse · 01/08/2021 23:16

Ah, my parents used to say that.

Na-night, God bless, wake up good in the morning!

TheSkatesOfCoachBombay · 01/08/2021 23:24

I say it to my children every night. Was always the last thing I heard before I went to sleep, too.

WillowintheUK · 01/08/2021 23:30

Mine are all grown now, but i always said ‘night night sleep tight, mummy loves you’
If I’ve grandchildren staying it’s the same but obviously mummy is substituted with gran.

With covid it’s been a while since I tucked a little person into bed.
