I don’t know if I like mushrooms or not

Sometimes I fancy them but when I cook them they are all watery and tasteless. Does it depend on the mushroom?

No, they are blanket awful so I can confirm you don’t like them

userxx · 01/08/2021 20:42

Shrooms are good to bulk recipes out.

Lovemusic33 · 01/08/2021 20:44

I prefer them raw or on pizza 😬

If they're watery and tasteless you're cooking them wrong.

Tinkerbellfluffyboots79 · 01/08/2021 20:45

I love them, in anything. Cut them thicker maybe? Don’t over cook them and get decent ones. Just try them in different dishes as they can taste different depending how you cook them

cardoon · 01/08/2021 20:45

I feel the same, I love loads of them in spag bol so it's not too meaty but other than that I'm not fussed

Absolutely!
LysistrataVickers · 01/08/2021 20:46

I find chestnut mushrooms tastier than white or button mushrooms. I love mushrooms but the DC don't so don't get them very often.

OhWifey · 01/08/2021 20:46

How are you cooking them?

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 01/08/2021 20:49

Cook them in butter. Whatever you are planning to do with them, melt butter in the frying pan and cook them slowly. Loads of water will come out of them and you have to cook until they soak it all back up again. You might need to put more butter on them plus lots of salt and pepper. Either just eat them like that or do this before you use them as an ingredient and they taste so much better. If you don't like them like this, you don't like them. Worth a check!

clickychicky · 01/08/2021 20:50

Have you had shitake ones?

This. That’s all.
clickychicky · 01/08/2021 20:51

Or those big ones you grill

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 01/08/2021 20:53

Roast them whole or halved in a bit of olive oil. It really concentrates the flavour and they're not at all watery.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 01/08/2021 20:54

@ElizabethinherGermanGarden has it, they need plenty of salted butter and black pepper. I love mushrooms but its the butter that makes them delicious

Unfashionable · 01/08/2021 20:54

If they are watery & tasteless you are not cooking them right.

Try buying the big flat ones, put them stalk-up on a baking sheet topped generously with garlic & parsley butter & black pepper and roast for 20 minutes. Serve in a soft roll to soak up all the juices. Divine. Smile

clickychicky · 01/08/2021 20:55

Or dried ones in a risotto

Mrsjayy · 01/08/2021 20:55

Cook then them in butter first like a pp suggested then put them in stuff I think because it's a fungi it needs to absorb flavour.

5togo · 01/08/2021 20:55

I fry them in oil or butter but they take ages to cook. The pan goes all watery and the mushrooms end up wrinkly.

blahblahblah321 · 01/08/2021 20:56

I can't stand the texture if they are too chunky - so hate stuffed mushrooms etc. Happy to have them on pizza

Favourite soup - mushroom! Grin

Miliao · 01/08/2021 20:58

First cook them in a dry frying pan, this will release all the water. If you add fat before the mushrooms, it mixes in with the water and they’ll get mushy. One they’ve been dry fried and have a nice crisp, then add butter and salt and pepper.

Mrsjayy · 01/08/2021 21:00

I think maybe you are cooking them too slow mine never go watery bung up the heat. I think you either like them or not my DD hates them !

Yes, and more butter = more delicious

JulesRimetStillGleaming · 01/08/2021 21:01

I used to hate them but suddenly liked them in my 20s. Second trying chestnut mushrooms. They're much more flavoursome and have a better texture than the white ones.

You need to whack the heat up and stir fry them briskly, not stew them.
