So, a sort of AIBU, but really trivial.

I got a tattoo when I was forty not that long ago. It’s representative of my kids and sort of a reminder that whilst my partner left me for his affair partner when my youngest was very young, we’re all happy.

I really like the artist Keith Haring so it’s that sort of style.

Someone said to me today that it’s really tacky to have a “cartoon tattoo” sort of a “what were you thinking?!”

I still like it!

If you like it and it has meaning then sod them! Not my style (I don't actually have any tattoos) but think it's so much better than some of the Copt and paste trendy tattoos. Bet your kids love it too!

CathyTre · 01/08/2021 20:37

In my mind it’s my three sons all together iyswim

Your body, your tattoo - I wouldn't give any thought to anything anyone else says.

It’s also on my foot and I live in England so don’t have my feet on show all year round!

I like it. And if you like it that is all that matters

Galassia · 01/08/2021 20:45

I do not have any tattoos and I’m not particularly keen on them but it’s not really much different from being rude about someone hair style/colour is it?

I bet they wouldn’t say to someone that their hair looks awful would they?

Unless you asked them their opinion it’s unkind to be so rude especially when they know it represents your children, regardless of what the image is.

I love Keith Haring’s work so as tattoo’s go, yours is not remotely offensive to me!

RicherThanYew · 01/08/2021 20:46

I had THE most offensive word tattooed on my foot in beautiful handwriting, my ex knobhead laughed and said "what a total waste of your skin". He was right, it is indeed my skin and I'll do with it as I darn well please. Yours is very nice and the colours look sharp, I haven't seen one anything like it before.

Shirleyphallus · 01/08/2021 20:48

I think it’s really rude to tell people unasked what they think of something, people would never say “oh I hate your handbag!” or “god your hairstyle looks shit”.

That said, the tattoo isn’t to my taste but no tattoos really are and I think a lot of people dislike tattoos generally but if you like it then it’s no one else’s business

CathyTre · 01/08/2021 20:49

Aww thanks everyone! I do really like it and I’m not easily offended but “tacky” and “cartoon” sort of upset me a bit (only a bit, I’m not really pissed off or anything!) 🙂

I think all tattoos are tacky, but I like Keith Haring. I hope you asked the person you were talking to whether they meant to sound so rude!

VodkaSlimline · 01/08/2021 20:50

Also, what sort of Philistine doesn't know the difference between Keith Haring and a cartoon? Hope you made them feel small for that.

Neondisco · 01/08/2021 20:53

I'd think they didn't know who Keith haring was. So it's a bit embarrassing for them not you.

Mumdiva99 · 01/08/2021 20:54

I love the meaning behind it. It's fab it means something to you. It's not really anyone else's business. That person was rude. I think it's quite unique....I haven't seen much like it. Wear it with pride....on the odd days it's warm enough to go sickness.

CathyTre · 01/08/2021 20:55

I just sort of said “oh, right, well I really still like it, more tea?” 😂 because I’m rubbish and polite, but thank you for recognising that, even if you hate tattoos, mine isn’t THAT awful 🙂

OP posts:
Pinkclarko · 01/08/2021 20:56

It’s not tacky. I I really like that and also the idea behind it. The person who said that is most odd.

BunnytheFriendlyDragon · 01/08/2021 20:58

I don't like tattoos but it's your body your business. I would have said "are you always so rude?"

BunnytheFriendlyDragon · 01/08/2021 20:58

And I would say it's cartoony.

CathyTre · 01/08/2021 21:01

Well it is cartoony but that’s the style of Keith Haring? So yes, cartoony but I didn’t represent my kids as Mickey Mouse (not that if I’d wanted to that’d be inherently bad, I don’t want to offend anyone!)

OP posts:
Standrewsschool · 01/08/2021 21:03

I love the sentiment behind it and I think it’s a lot of fun - cheery.

CathyTre · 01/08/2021 21:06

That’s exactly what I wanted - cheery 🙂 We all had a tough time and fur some reason that’s how I wanted to represent our still surviving family iyswim?

For!

OP posts:
TheSkatesOfCoachBombay · 01/08/2021 21:08

I like it. You've hardly got Tinkerbell tattooed on your shoulder with "powered by fairy dust" next to it 🙄

It's colourful, artistic and has meaning. 👍🏻

CathyTre · 01/08/2021 21:10

Well at least I didn’t have it years ago and now need to cross out their father 😂

OP posts:
Cheeseycheeseycheesecheese · 01/08/2021 21:13

I really like tattoos and I love the thought behind this one, it's well done and as above, sharp, the colours pop. And most importantly, you like it.

They're rude, and I hope you do tell them so in the future.

CathyTre · 01/08/2021 21:14

My eldest son played professional football for a blue club, middle one just loves the colour red (ans his dad supports Liverpool FC so so does he 🤦‍♀️) and youngest was so little and cheerful in general I thought yellow was appropriate 🙂
