Mushroom. Fucking. Risotto.

We're on a rare trip away, been looking forward to it for ages especially about having some lovely food.

Now I discover tonight's veggie option is mushroom risotto. Mushroom. Fucking. Risotto.

What's the meal that makes your heart sink?

Goats cheese always used to be the veggie option but isn’t anymore. Lots of places have now gone for vegan options rather than veggie (presumably too expensive to have both veggie and vegan on the menu). I miss the cheese ☹️

The best meal I ever had was mushroom risotto, in a mountain hut bar in Italy. The flavour delicious, texture was not mushy and it wasn’t grey!!

My veggie heart sinks at bay kind of “tartlet”, which is essentially a disc of frozen puff pastry, slice of courgette, slice of aubergine a slice of goats cheese.

NeedNewKnees · 01/08/2021 14:10

Beetroot. So many places have beetroot in their veggie options. Bloody stuff tastes like soul, can’t abide it.

NeedNewKnees · 01/08/2021 14:11

*soil! Damned autocorrect

Concestor · 01/08/2021 14:12

Sweet potato/butternut squash curry makes my heart sink.

I'm also going off all the meat free burgers because it's often the only choice and I prefer something less processed.

I'd love to see something with tofu but restaurants never seem to cook with that.

BeenAsFarAsMercyAndGrand · 01/08/2021 14:12

Are you obligated to eat at the place with only one veggie option because it's all inclusive? That's utter crap.

Fuck that shit.

2bazookas · 01/08/2021 14:12

@HPLikecraft

I like mushroom risotto!
Me too.
GameSetMatch · 01/08/2021 14:13

Vegetarian chilli or vegetarian lasagna,I don’t mind either but hate those options whilst out for dinner.

Littlegoth · 01/08/2021 14:13

Anything with rhubarb.

I once had a tasting menu in a posh restaurant. 5 out of 7 courses had rhubarb on. Worst meal ever.

Sillysuzie · 01/08/2021 14:16

I'm not veggie but usually eat veggie out cause I'm so lucky with meat quality.
My biggest bugbear is that the vegetarian option is often vegan too, as if to kill two birds with one stone so to speak.
Vegan cheese is rancid and stinks. Spoils everything...

Greenrubber · 01/08/2021 14:21

I used to hate mushrooms but since going vegan I'm really starting to enjoy them more and more I wish there were more variety in my local shop tho

Must be annoying for all the vegetarians who are getting less choice as vegan options are pushed tho

There's an interesting program on netflix called Fantastic fungi! It may give you a new love for them

Kanaloa · 01/08/2021 14:22

Another thing I hate is all-in-one dishes. So there will be a full menu of meat and fish dishes to choose from, then one dish that is vegetarian/vegan, gluten free, and low calorie. As if they’re trying to sort all the dietary needs with one dish, and you just have to be grateful they’ve even considered you.

Disfordarkchocolate · 01/08/2021 14:23

I like it but I can trace the years of my relationship with my husband by the veggie option he was offered when we went out. We are now in the Cauliflower Era. The Risotto Era lasted a bloody long time.

StevieNix · 01/08/2021 14:24

I bloody love mushroom risotto so I’d be over the moon!
I hate when the vegetarian option is ratatouille- it’s always watery tomato sauce with almost raw vegetables and zero flavour

BIoodyStupidJohnson · 01/08/2021 14:27

Fish pie.

I like fish, and I like pies. But I’ve yet to have a fish pie that doesn’t taste like trawler scrapings disinterestedly heated in a Persil sauce.

lostinthejungle22 · 01/08/2021 14:28

I love mushroom risotto! I'm vegan now and it's a very rare occurrence :( About 5 years ago the only vegan option was falafel, or a curry, which I hate with a passion, that was not a fun time to go out for a meal.

Sadly I'm not a great cook and never succeeded in making a good risotto :(

DoTheNextRightThing · 01/08/2021 14:32

I love mushroom risotto! I would be thrilled Grin

Slothkin · 01/08/2021 14:32

@Kanaloa I was recently trying to work out a menu for a group with consisted of three vegetarians, one of which can’t eat chilli and another who hates coconut; someone allergic to eggs and dairy; someone who hates mushrooms, aubergine, courgettes, broccoli and pulses and two people with no dietary requirements. I was looking hard at that Venn diagram with a pile of recipe books for a while!

Kanaloa · 01/08/2021 14:36

To be fair I think the correct menu for that bunch is called ‘bring a packed lunch.’ Hopefully you managed a dish that sorted everyone happily!

Formaldeheidi · 01/08/2021 14:38

for me it’s stuffed peppers/mushrooms. Or a veggie burger with an uninspiring processed plant based patty. I’d rather have a slab of halloumi in a bun or some chargrilled veg or falafel if I’m going out. Hmm

HunkyPunk · 01/08/2021 14:43

Another here whose heart sinks when I see butternut squash. Not because I dont like it, I do, in moderation, but it's become the ubiqiutous 'bulker-upper' of meat-free dishes in so many restaurants.

moonbedazzled · 01/08/2021 14:44

I hate mushroom risotto. Its either over cooked slime, or there's still that hard kernel in the rice Yuk. I once had pea risotto at Warwick Castle and it was delicious. I remember when the only veggie option was veggie lasagne, then it went to ricotta and spinach cannelloni, then to risotto. Now it's curry or burgers, and the burgers are just dry on a dry bun. Yuk. Its all very unoriginal and uninspiring. We went to Nepal a couple of years, ago and half their food is vegetarian because of the Hindu population. And it's delicious. Chilli paneer. Mmm.

AbsolutelyPatsy · 01/08/2021 14:45

i dont like goats cheese

AbsolutelyPatsy · 01/08/2021 14:46

when i was first a vegetarian in the 1980s, the option was omelette usually, or perhaps a quiche

1forAll74 · 01/08/2021 14:50

Quiche and Pizzas.
