I have actually thought this over the last few days but I think because it's August it's actually making me think maybe autumn isn't far away. It's a bit cold outside, I'm considering putting the heat on and we have back to school shopping to do this week. I live in NI so kids have been on summer holidays since the end of June, we are almost ready for back to school!

Anyone else feeling the upcoming change in the seasons approaching? There's just something in the air when autumn is coming isn't there. Although maybe we'll get a last minute heatwave through August and one more big blast of summer?

24 degrees and sunny in my part of London.😎

sleepyhead · 01/08/2021 16:20

Nope. Really stuffy here in Glasgow. Keeps threatening rain but doesn't amount to anything - my garden's fried and it was hard to sleep last night although forecast cooler.

SoddingWeddings · 01/08/2021 16:37

Not here. I'm in Cornwall, it's been pouring with rain half the day but still very warm. and it's now 20c broad sunshine and stuffy as hell.

Traditonally in Ireland autumn started in August. The Irish for September is Meán Fómhair which means the middle of autumn and October is Deireadh Fómhair which means the end of autumn.

It definitely felt a bit breathy here this morning in Perthshire but it’s ok now.

We too are now on the countdown to back to school. Uniform shopping tomorrow but we are still relaxed uniform so black joggers, hoodies and trainers.

DGRossetti · 01/08/2021 17:14

The light in the evening has changed - definitely got a slightly autumnal cast to it.

Babyroobs · 01/08/2021 17:46

I said the same to dh last night - definitely cool here in the midlands in the evenings.

SisterAgatha · 01/08/2021 17:48

Yeah I felt that today. Loved it. Out of nowhere was a little chill and that leafy feel

Words · 01/08/2021 17:51

Yes. Definite autumnal hint in the air and in the light. Don't normally notice it till later on in the month.

Burtknowsbest · 01/08/2021 17:52

It actually smelt like autumn to me the other morning - I do hope we go straight into autumn, no Indian summer.

Freefalling22 · 01/08/2021 17:55

Feels like that a bit here too.
I've been tempted to put the heating on, I'm wearing my thicker dressing gown and have been having porridge for breakfast the last few days.

Traditonally in Ireland autumn started in August. The Irish for September is Meán Fómhair which means the middle of autumn and October is Deireadh Fómhair which means the end of autumn.
In the Middle Ages in England August was the first month of autumn too, as that's when harvest started.

It's a lovely, sunny summer's evening in North Wales, definitely no hint of autumn yet Smile

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 01/08/2021 17:58

Sheet rain here .. again….se England, weird summer weather for sure as been so regular.

sadperson16 · 01/08/2021 17:59

What are the other seasons in the Irish system please?

Katekarate · 01/08/2021 18:10

Yes for me it's the evenings getting darker earlier, really noticed it the past couple of days

Indigopearl · 01/08/2021 18:11

I think I have had heating on in May, June and July at times in SE England. It does not feel like we have had any summer yet other than 4 days last month.

Runningquestion · 01/08/2021 18:16

I have thought this for the past few days. We had that horrible heatwave then a couple of nights later I went to bed and was cold all night. I’ve felt chilly at night even since a d my house had felt slightly uncomfortably chilly every day for some of the day. There’s a feeling in the air of autumn somehow. It’s upset me a bit because I usually notice this right at the end of august, not the beginning. I hate being too hot, it I’m not ready for summer to go yet.

niceupthedanceagain · 01/08/2021 18:18

I bought a jumper today .

LoveFall · 01/08/2021 18:28

Not here. I wish. We have had another heat wave and there are many wildfires.

It is cloudy and a bit smoky in Vancouver. 27 degrees outside and very muggy. 25 inside our condo and also muggy. Even the dog is lethargic.

My sister in Kelowna says it is so smoky there it is almost like nighttime.

Please send the autumnal feelings.

LoveFall · 01/08/2021 18:29

Even some summer rain would be good. Thinking about doing a rain dance.

DrCoconut · 01/08/2021 20:41

Yes and it's rubbish. I want summer first. I'm considering putting the heating on tonight it's so cold and it's just been miserable and wet for ages apart from a few days of excessive heat a couple of weeks ago. Autumn is horrible and depressing.

Hm2020 · 01/08/2021 20:42

I am in central London and just thought the exact same thing!

lovescats3 · 01/08/2021 20:52

Yes in London and felt it was autumnal today. My Irish mother says in Ireland they count August as the beginning of autumn and no whilst I don't love the heat am not ready for summer to be over

MrsFlinch · 01/08/2021 20:53

I said this this morning, was chilly enough to need my hoody felt like late September.
But did brighten and warm up this afternoon, I’m actually feeling rather warm now am sitting with a vest on!
