Feels a bit autumnal out there.

I have actually thought this over the last few days but I think because it's August it's actually making me think maybe autumn isn't far away. It's a bit cold outside, I'm considering putting the heat on and we have back to school shopping to do this week. I live in NI so kids have been on summer holidays since the end of June, we are almost ready for back to school!

Anyone else feeling the upcoming change in the seasons approaching? There's just something in the air when autumn is coming isn't there. Although maybe we'll get a last minute heatwave through August and one more big blast of summer?

Yes but l don't feel we have really had summer yet!

MovinOnUp · 01/08/2021 20:55

I just said this to my friend today, Highlands if Scotland definitely had an autumnal feel to it today!

lynsey91 · 01/08/2021 20:56

Definitely chilly in East Midlands. Quite a lot of rain too so I had to use the tumble dryer which really annoyed me.

Apart from those stupidly hot days we have so far had yet another shit summer. Here we have only had 1 week of school holidays but it always seems to be the same each year.

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 01/08/2021 20:56

Hot in London but we've had loads of heavy showers and it's cold in the morning. I put the heating on in the morning after DH leaves.

MrsSkylerWhite · 01/08/2021 20:57

Lovely here in NW.

PicsInRed · 01/08/2021 20:57

A few days ago I noticed the leaves are already falling, so if "autumn" = "fall", then it's getting pretty autumny out there.

jerometheturnipking · 01/08/2021 20:57

I could swear that when I was at primary school in the 90s autumn was August/September/October. I remember having arguments with my English mum about it because she was of the September/October/November persuasion.

I was out with DD today and the trees are starting to turn already - I think we’re in for an impressive colour change.

Feelingoktoday · 01/08/2021 20:59

Hail stones today. South east England. Definitely chilly and nearly dark before 9pm now.

drumandthebass · 01/08/2021 21:00

Yep. We had roast lamb and a bottle of red today. Just needed the log burner on and we would've been there!

isthismylifenow · 01/08/2021 21:01

OP I feel the same, but just the opposite. I'm in the southern hemisphere and in winter now and it's been a really cold one. Today for the first time I got that smell of nicer weather when I I opened the door this morning. And lo and behold we had the warmest winter day yet (21 degrees). Last week during the night it got down to minus 8 and only 7 degrees in the day, so quite the extreme. So maybe there is just something about 1 August. And I felt so much happier today Smile and nothing beats the smell in the air.

Although I just want 1 Sept to roll on fast as I'm bloody fed up of winter now.

I am sure after a stinking summer I will look forward to autumn and winter again too...

lovescats3 · 01/08/2021 21:02

I also noticed the spiky conker shells on the ground yesterday which seems odd for August

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 01/08/2021 21:26

Yeah, August is an autumn month really. Scotland has the right idea as far as summer holidays go, ours start too late.

mrsrichardsglasses · 01/08/2021 21:43

It's definitely cooler here (Northamptonshire). We've had a lot of rain as well, almost constant. Feels very wintery.
I don't mind at all, I hate the heat, but I'm a bit sad for the DC's as we've bought them a nice big paddling pool and they only got about a weeks use of it before we had to bring it in!

Themostwonderfultimeoftheyear · 01/08/2021 21:45

August is always when I first start to sense autumn, although usually more towards the middle of the month. There is a smell in the air that develops which feels autumnal. I love autumn so it fills me with excitement.

We are hopefully moving to the country in the next month or so and I look forward to being more aware of the changing seasons.

Okaygreatthanks · 01/08/2021 21:48

Also in NI, was gardening and got the autumn feeling, was discussing it with DH! Also mid back-to-school madness here!

Roadhouse111 · 01/08/2021 21:51

Funny I live in NI and was thinking this exact thing as I shut the windows tonight, there's a definite turn in the evening light and it's much cooler tonight, I did consider lighting our fire!
I do get a bit season weary, winter is long, then spring is glorious, then summer goes on a big long, and then autumn comes with all its joys.
Glad to live on a country where we have seasons, couldn't face a year long summer!

dementedma · 01/08/2021 21:58

Noooo. Not ready for autumn yet

IdblowJonSnow · 01/08/2021 22:16

Yep, a definite nip in the air this eve, first big spider the other day (shudder), and also noticed the nights are drawing in!

Love early autumn, spiders aside.

This thread has clearly jinxed it!

Heat wave now due mid August 😭

LadyCatStark · 02/08/2021 16:30

It’s perfect here in NW England. Sunny and warm but not too hot with a light sea beeeze 🥰.

Sorry @Burtknowsbest! I'll believe it when I see it though. Grey and drizzly and cold here today and I had a hot chocolate earlier. Only a few weeks til tons of Roses and Quality Street hit the shops then we'll be feeling it!

Yeah it’s been a bit like that today here in Yorkshire - had to put the heating on for half an hour!
