On the 3rd worst holiday ever - pity party

TLDR: we are in Cornwall, staying in a caravan with walls so thin I can hear the DC breathing at night. All the pre-planned, booked months ago activities have been cancelled because it won't stop F-ing raining. Everywhere else is rammed or fully booked and wonders why we didn't book months ago Hmm We resorted to taking the children to the cinema on Tuesday, then to an English Heritage place exactly the same as every other English Heritage place that doesn't take me 5 hours to drive to. Today we are at the Eden Project. DD keeps trying to steal leaves and flowers and whining for ice cream. DS just wants a rest or to go on the zip wire, which is fully booked and I didn't pre-book because we did zip wiring last week. I'm allergic to all the rare plants and keep sneezing. All the ice cream is made with weird stuff.

I've paid a grand to live in a caravan, doing things that I could do within an hour of home. I can't wait to go home. I know lots of people are 'going on holiday' by camping under their imaginary dining table this summer but Sad

Hey op,
We are in Cornwall too and yep in Marizon!

And we've struggled too, there really isn't much to do if the weather is crap! We managed a couple of days on the beach. We did Flambards yesterday but we were done by lunch!!
Really not sure what to do tomorrow !

Seesawmummadaw · 29/07/2021 20:38

At least the storm will be exciting tonight Wink if the dc are in to Mallory towers take them up to Prideaux in Padstow to see where recent scenes were filmed. Lots of deer to see too.

userxx · 29/07/2021 20:38

@Hopeisnotastrategy

Buy a large flask. Fill it with tea/coffee/hot chocolate/ soup. It will cheer you up as you have a windscreen picnic looking out at the rain. 💕

Or wine, that will make it bearable. Wine makes everything bearable.

thedarkling · 29/07/2021 20:39

Wine is necessary here

Maggiesfarm · 29/07/2021 20:40

We nearly always holiday'd earlier in July when the weather is generally better. We had some marvellous, sunny UK holidays.

FuzzyPuffling · 29/07/2021 20:42

Get it grabbed. Make my excellent broccoli soup. Excellent on a grey beach with sandwiches

I would, but it's the wrong end of Cornwall for me. Very galling, especially as I bet my Tesco delivery tomorrow has no broccoli left.

StrongArm · 29/07/2021 20:53

If it's any consolation, all my childhood holidays were like this. I even recall sitting on a beach in Cornwall at the age of 5 in a head to toe southwester yellow rain coat Grin. Looking back I have fond memories! So rest assured this is character building for your kids!

careerchangeperhaps · 29/07/2021 20:58

@BlowDryRat The Eden project ice cream is amazing. There are lots of dairy varieties and the sugar is just a natural (non-refined) product. It really is lovely.
However, if you're really not digging it, they sell Kelly's ice cream in mini tubs in the little shop between the biomes.

sandgrown · 29/07/2021 21:02

I live in a Northern seaside resort that’s noted for fresh air and fun. My ex was always trying to persuade me to go to Cornwall but the long drive out me off . It looked so beautiful when the G7 conference was on that I enquired about flights to Newquay .This thread has really put me off ! Sounds like the Lake District which is also beautiful until it rains but I guess there would be no lakes if it didn’t!

maddiemookins16mum · 29/07/2021 21:04

Look at the Kids R Us (or something) in St Ives, it’s an amazing youth theatre with a show running at present.

BlowDryRat · 29/07/2021 21:11

I liked my ice cream but was in full grumble mode. Sorry to anyone shocked and outraged! I just wish they'd explain what the random things no one's ever heard of are so you don't feel stupid having to ask. Stupid pretentious ice cream Angry

@cancancan race you to the ice cream farm? We walked the DC to the cinema in Penzance with much wailing if that's any good for you. It took about an hour and a half, with time in there for looking at interesting pebbles and whingeing about wet feet.

Oh yes, DD tricked DS into thinking he could walk on water at the Eden Project. One wet foot and one outraged child later... Hmm

It pissed with rain every time I went to Cornwall, with the odd lovely beach day. Things we did in the rain, which were ok
Gweek seal sanctuary
Flambards
Mine tour
Paradise park

CurryLover55 · 29/07/2021 21:16

Not sure where it is exactly but there’s a place that makes chocolate & they also do amazing breakfasts! We went there when we stayed at Mullion. I will google it & come back to you.

CurryLover55 · 29/07/2021 21:18

The chocolate factory & craft centre.

BlowDryRat · 29/07/2021 21:18

That looks good, thanks!

AbsolutelyPatsy · 29/07/2021 21:21

that wet weather is so synonymous with Cornwall ime

cancancan · 29/07/2021 21:52

You walked from Marizon to
Penzance???

Think I would've been moaning too!! We have DD (5) so long walks like that are out of the question.
It's our last day tomorrow so will prob just tidy up the van and get stuff together ready for an early exit on Saturday morning.

BlowDryRat · 29/07/2021 21:56

It's just over 2 miles so very doable but probably not with a 5yo. We got the bus back!

If your in Malory Towers mode find the coastal swimming pools we're lucky enough to enjoy. Hartland Abbey is the school location.

We won't go to Eden during the summer hols because of the tourists but I really hate hearing you moan about it. It endlessly reinvents itself - parkrun, half marathons, the ice rink, the Father Christmas is absolutely amazing and has filled my children's heads with wonderful stories. They really look after us when you have all disappeared. We love the Eden catering- I get that up country you have all your chain stuff, Pizza Express, Wagamas, etc but down here it allows my kids to try other stuff like burritos, somewhere 'safe' where nothing bad can ever happen at Eden. Padstow is also local friendly in the winter. We are very lucky and we feel sorry that you lead a different kind of life and can't appreciate ours even when you are on holiday. Holidays shouldn't be this stressful, it's awful to watch you but you have all had a tough year.

Remmy123 · 29/07/2021 22:59

I had a similar holiday in France in a caravan with a very young baby, disgusting caravan and loads of bed bugs ..

Holidaying in a caravan with bad weather is tough. I'd leave early.

stairway · 29/07/2021 23:13

You might not have a great holiday but you’ll love the memories trust me. We had a similar holiday in Cornwall during February half term 2020, the weather was bad even for February but I look back on it fondly now. Maybe because it was the last of the normal.

PeacheyPeach · 30/07/2021 00:23

What is flambards like!?

Seesawmummadaw · 30/07/2021 00:37

@PeacheyPeach ok for young children

SophieGiroux · 30/07/2021 00:42

[quote MrsSlocombesPussy]Ever since I read this review I wanted to go to Bodmin jail, to see the best worst tourist attraction in the UK. However after looking at the website, I think they've renovated it now, so I've missed my chance

Oh I bloody loved Bodmin
jail! It was so much fun but always dead so I'm not surprised they had to move on

Snugglybuggly · 30/07/2021 00:52

Cornwall is lovely
