On the 3rd worst holiday ever - pity party

TLDR: we are in Cornwall, staying in a caravan with walls so thin I can hear the DC breathing at night. All the pre-planned, booked months ago activities have been cancelled because it won't stop F-ing raining. Everywhere else is rammed or fully booked and wonders why we didn't book months ago Hmm We resorted to taking the children to the cinema on Tuesday, then to an English Heritage place exactly the same as every other English Heritage place that doesn't take me 5 hours to drive to. Today we are at the Eden Project. DD keeps trying to steal leaves and flowers and whining for ice cream. DS just wants a rest or to go on the zip wire, which is fully booked and I didn't pre-book because we did zip wiring last week. I'm allergic to all the rare plants and keep sneezing. All the ice cream is made with weird stuff.

I've paid a grand to live in a caravan, doing things that I could do within an hour of home. I can't wait to go home. I know lots of people are 'going on holiday' by camping under their imaginary dining table this summer but Sad

Not sure if it's open (and you may need to book anyway) but Paradise Park in Hayle has a brilliant indoor jungle barn soft play...

harverina · 29/07/2021 16:01

It’s never fun when it rains on holiday. It rained a lot when we were in Devon last year. We just bought wetsuits and spent most of the time on boards in the sea. Not much fun for me keeping the bags etc safe but the kids loved it. We did get a couple of really good days.

On rainy days we tend to jump in the car eith a picnic and go for drives too.

BlowDryRat · 29/07/2021 16:02

Looks lovely! I'm just sulking because I was feeling great about being right on an amazing beach so we didn't have to drive anywhere.

Op I have to say your holiday sounds exactly like the reason I've never wanted to holiday in a caravan in England 🙈, add kids to they mixture and you've got my idea of hell nailed. At least abroad you get to throw them in the pool and ply them with cheap ice creams for 8 hours of the day. Even then I've had holidays I'd describe as hellish since the DC came along, too much sun/sand/whining etc. I feel for you op, I think I'd cut the holiday short and admit defeat this time.

harverina · 29/07/2021 16:03

I’m always just happy with a change of location tbh. Takeaways in the caravan, playing cards and board games. Walks on the beach at night when the rain finally stops etc.

All helped along with cava and gin 😂

blobby10 · 29/07/2021 16:03

BlowDryRat Cornwall is wonderful in the sun. Not so great in the rain! However we often found that if it was horrendous on the south coast, the north coast was OK and vice versa. Many days were spent chasing the patch of blue sky Grin.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 29/07/2021 16:04

@Thislittlefinger123 got there before me. Take refuge in the fact that this is only the 3rd worst one. I think things got better with DD when she got older and I divorced her father. Grin

Darkchocolateandcoffee · 29/07/2021 16:06

Agree OP, Cornwall is awful in the rain whatever some hardy types may say. I consider myself pretty tough but when it pisses down in Cornwall (or Devon, or Wales, or anywhere really in the UK) I would always rather be at home.

Gilly12345 · 29/07/2021 16:06

I do feel for you, the UK is great for holidays but only if the weather is settled, can’t you return to the caravan and play cards, watch the Olympics, read a book, puzzlebooks etc.?

Hope things improve for you.

Mincepiesallyearround · 29/07/2021 16:07

Oh OP that sounds awful, it’s so disappointing when the weather isn’t good. After the 18 months we’ve had it feels like we’re owed it! I’m on holiday too, my son arrived with a vomiting bug so we had a bungalow full of wet washing for two days. It absolutely POURED the first two days. Weather otherwise has been ok but not hot and sunny and id hopefully packed the factor 50 for the kids. Without amazing weather it feels like being at home but without the comforts of home (own bedrooms/plenty of toys and crafts for rainy days).

Our worst caravan holiday we turned up with caravan +multiple dc and a week's shopping..
Friend who we arranged to go with rocked up with trailer tent, 3 x dc....
.....
And on friends kneee she had brought....

A cooked chicken.

Apparently the campsite shop would serve them well the week.
It rained..
Guess who hosted 5 extra guests?

It's not too grim on the west side presently (where I am) and Loe beach is quite sheltered?

BlowDryRat · 29/07/2021 16:14

S'alright, I feel better now I've had a moan. Stupid covid restrictions. I can't wait to go somewhere hot and sunny!

So your standard uk holiday. Sounds like our holiday in cornwall only we paid a small fortune to stay in a trendy yurt.In the middle of a field cover in cow pats... stormy wind and rains. Went to eden project twice... may i also recommend lost gardens of Heligan . my husband refused to stay in uk for our holidays for the next 10 years. Go to padstow. no parking and queues for ages to get any food....
Stovetopespresso · 29/07/2021 16:19

omg this thread is pure dread for me, we came back from camping yesterday (the mud...the mud Sad) and are off to Cornwall tomorrow. whhhyy? WHHYYY??

DogsSausages · 29/07/2021 16:20

I suggest you dont read the weather forecast for Cornwall in The Guardian for tonight and tomorrow😥

Madcats · 29/07/2021 16:22

You might want to hunker down tonight, OP. Storm Evert is on its way with strong to gale force winds.

It could be worse; DH managed pick up covid on holiday which I've now managed to catch too (so that will be 15 days of splendid isolation for me and DD). Luckily it's like a bad cold, even though DD is too young to be vaxxed.

GuyFawkesDay · 29/07/2021 16:22

There was plenty of dairy packed ice cream at Eden. I know cos I had a flipping huge one 2 days ago.

We pre-booked everything: from the zoo to Eden to National trust trips and surfing lessons....none have been cancelled. Sounds like you've been really unlucky.

Take the kids to Paradise park in Hayle. Easy drive and it's good fun.

PenguinIce · 29/07/2021 16:23

How old are the dc? There’s a big indoor play area close to Eden you could do on the way back if they are young.

Or there are indoor trampoline park dotted around Cornwall. I use to always take mine rock-pooling when it rained and Cornwall had some great beaches for that.

Maggiesfarm · 29/07/2021 16:23

I'm so sorry. Cornwall is lovely, one of my favourite places, but no fun if you don't like your accommodation.

I checked the forecast and it looks as though it will be raining there for the next week though the temperature goes up a bit tomorrow. I imagine it isn't continuous rain (it isn't here, it rains on and off and is not cold). Are there no fun things on site, eg club house or swimming pool?

What a disappointment for you. There must be some places of interest (other than Heritage), near by and, as long as it isn't cold, it's lovely swimming in the sea during rain showers.

GuyFawkesDay · 29/07/2021 16:23

PS the coconut, pineapple and baobab ice cream is lush 😁

gogohm · 29/07/2021 16:24

We just wear wetsuits and go in the sea, surf is better in bad weather. When my kids were small they bodyboarders too

NothingIsWrong · 29/07/2021 16:24

Just got back from a few days in Penzance, we had some success with an escape room in Newlyn - they have availability all day tomorrow, I just had a look, if you fancied that?

www.cornwallsgreatescaperooms.co.uk/

Mine are 13, 11 and 8, and it was just me with them

Saidtoomuch · 29/07/2021 16:24

Would you have a go a paddle boarding? I'm thinking if its a water sport rain won't make much difference.
