On the 3rd worst holiday ever - pity party

TLDR: we are in Cornwall, staying in a caravan with walls so thin I can hear the DC breathing at night. All the pre-planned, booked months ago activities have been cancelled because it won't stop F-ing raining. Everywhere else is rammed or fully booked and wonders why we didn't book months ago Hmm We resorted to taking the children to the cinema on Tuesday, then to an English Heritage place exactly the same as every other English Heritage place that doesn't take me 5 hours to drive to. Today we are at the Eden Project. DD keeps trying to steal leaves and flowers and whining for ice cream. DS just wants a rest or to go on the zip wire,which is fully booked and I didn't pre-book because we did zip wiring last week. I'm allergic to all the rare plants and keep sneezing. All the ice cream is made with weird stuff.

I've paid a grand to live in a caravan, doing things that I could do within an hour of home. I can't wait to go home. I know lots of people are 'going on holiday' by camping under their imaginary dining table this summer but Sad

It’s pissing it down around Penzance today to be fair but I’ve been on the beach everyday for the last 3 days and only got rained on for about 10 minutes yesterday. Looks like dry tomorrow afternoon again.

ShadowInVain · 29/07/2021 19:21

@BlowDryRat

And it's not even raining today?

I can assure you that it is. I took this photo just now.

Even the rainy photograph makes me wish I was there!

@Sundancerintherain

lighthearted It could be worse op. I once ( when an older teen ) did a 31 hour bus trip to the Costa Brava. Mt then Best friend announced on arrival that she had " forgotten " her travellers cheques and the hotel was based on the one from The Inbetweeners film.
Were you at the Osiris? Grin

well @BlowDryRat even rubbish holidays can be a good source of laughs down the line, eventually. Take photos of them looking boot faced to laugh about with them later.

We had a miserable holiday to France as our last family holiday 4 years back where we rented a gorgeous place that turned out to be bug infested, have low ceilings so we constantly banged our heads, have no curtains (so my light sensitive dc didn't sleep more than cat naps for 10 days), the swimming pool went green after two days due to the filter packing up, and the kids beat each other up the whole time. We came back early after paying extra to escape!

Peppaismyrolemodel · 29/07/2021 19:28

@BlowDryRat

Marazion. We've been to the Mount Grin We had a lovely couple of days when we first arrived (and, TBF, an amazing week at PGL in Torquay before that). I'd booked loads of water sports, boat trips, bike rides etc.
If you’re near Pz go to ‘country skittles’ pretty low key but inside, bowling, board games.. great cheesy chips and lots of beer 😬
TheSmallAssassin · 29/07/2021 19:28

Porthcurno has apparently been really busy @gingergiraffe - Google keeps showing me Cornwall Live pages about PORTHCURNO GRIDLOCKED AGAIN!!

Maybe in the rain parking might be easier!

Lovemusic33 · 29/07/2021 19:32

I love Cornwall but 100% would not go again during school holidays, last time we did it was awful and that was before covid, everywhere was packed, couldn’t park at a beach unless you got there at 7am and all restaurants and cafes were booked up. We now head inland away from the coast to get away from the crowds.

FuzzyPuffling · 29/07/2021 19:32

Cornwall Live is now telling me there's a huge broccoli spillage on the A30, causing both traffic delays and a broccoli shortage.

Musmerian · 29/07/2021 19:37

OP - this is why I’d rather not go on holiday if I can’t go abroad somewhere hot! My tantrum in St Ives on a family holiday years ago has become the stuff of family legend!

Twillow · 29/07/2021 19:38

I do feel for you..but it does make me feel better as I couldn't even book any accommodation in the area in my price range for the summer holiday... Flowers

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 29/07/2021 19:40

Christ. You're on holiday. Stop moaning. I haven't had a holiday for over two years.

Find a way to make the best of it.

There's got to be a pun there somewhere but I'm blowed if I can think of one.
ivfgottwins · 29/07/2021 19:43

I'd check the weather forecast as a major storm and gale force winds is due to hit Cornwall and south east this evening 😬

Jbh333 · 29/07/2021 19:45

I would never utter these words in real life to my friends and family but I just wanna go abroad somewhere warm. I never enjoy uk holidays (apart from one where it was 30 degrees everyday) mainly the weather spoils a lot of it. I really have tried and would never tell anyone in fear of sounding like a brat but I feel the dissatisfaction.

And I know I’m lucky to even have the one holiday abroad per year (pre pandemic) so here’s to 2022! Bloody expensive to holiday in uk too!

BlowDryRat · 29/07/2021 19:47

The accommodation is rather nice really. I've just never been in a caravan before so didn't know just how thin the walls were. Goodness knows how Travellers manage to have families. There's none of that going on here Sad We're back now and are eating chips with the DC tucked up in duvets watching Mallory Towers.

No competitive misery here please. I've already acknowledged that many people aren't able to have any sort of holiday this year. It doesn't make mine any less crap.

Brassi-carnage !
RhubarbTea · 29/07/2021 20:05

I'm so sorry OP, it is particularly galling isn't it given the recent heatwave. I live in mid Cornwall and it's absolourely pissing down out there.

I suggest you try some Roskillys ice cream while you are down. If you can be arsed, drive to their farm place where they make it on the Lizard and they have lots of flavours there. It's amaaaazingly tasty. You can also get it at various stands and there's a little shop that sells it in Falmouth.
Also in Falmouth is the maritime museum which is fine for a few hours although not thrilling but it's indoors and has a nice cafe with views over the water.
I hope things perk up a bit, how much longer have you got? Ditto on the driving to various bits for some good weather, it does vary quite a lot.

Karwomannghia · 29/07/2021 20:07

At least you’re not booked on the Scillonian tomorrow!

BlowDryRat · 29/07/2021 20:14

There is that!

We're supposed to be on the Lizard tomorrow for coasteering (I'm just watching the email inbox for the cancellation). A visit to an ice cream place sounds like an excellent side trip.

We're going home on Saturday via Exeter. The main reason we can't leave early is because DS is living for the Premier Inn breakfast. It's the itinerary highlight of his holiday Confused

I feel your pain. We have had a couple if terrible holidays abroad too though. Before we had kids DH and I used to book those last minute jobs with unknown accomodation. One year we went to Fuertoventura (however you spell it) and ended up in a new resort. Our hotel was literally on its own in the middle of a vast dusty wasteland. We were in a self catering room with no facilities for miles. I kid you not the rep said at his welcome speech. "I know what you are thinking but I'm here for 2 years you only have to endure 2 weeks". That was topped though by the holiday where my youngest who was about 2 got chicken pox coupled with a chest infection . Understandably she wasn't too happy and cried constantly. We were camping and we had to take it in turns to stay at the tent with her resorting to pissing in a bucket or trying to supervise the other three children who were frankly feral at the pool or beach. I was so glad to get home!

Get it grabbed. Make my excellent broccoli soup. Excellent on a grey beach with sandwiches. 😊💕
Hopeisnotastrategy · 29/07/2021 20:28

Buy a large flask. Fill it with tea/coffee/hot chocolate/ soup. It will cheer you up as you have a windscreen picnic looking out at the rain. 💕

Wineiscooling · 29/07/2021 20:31

Oh God! I'm going to Cornwall for the first time in 3 weeks. I haven't booked anything either! I'd better get organised. We had a wonderful holiday in Wales last year, no crowds , empty deserted beaches, beautiful weather! I'm nervous for Cornwall now !
