On the 3rd worst holiday ever - pity party

TLDR: we are in Cornwall, staying in a caravan with walls so thin I can hear the DC breathing at night. All the pre-planned, booked months ago activities have been cancelled because it won't stop F-ing raining. Everywhere else is rammed or fully booked and wonders why we didn't book months ago Hmm We resorted to taking the children to the cinema on Tuesday, then to an English Heritage place exactly the same as every other English Heritage place that doesn't take me 5 hours to drive to. Today we are at the Eden Project. DD keeps trying to steal leaves and flowers and whining for ice cream. DS just wants a rest or to go on the zip wire, which is fully booked and I didn't pre-book because we did zip wiring last week. I'm allergic to all the rare plants and keep sneezing. All the ice cream is made with weird stuff.

I've paid a grand to live in a caravan, doing things that I could do within an hour of home. I can't wait to go home. I know lots of people are 'going on holiday' by camping under their imaginary dining table this summer but Sad

Take plenty of photos of bad bits as well as the good: It'll be great to laugh about this holiday when they're adults....me and my siblings always have a chuckle about the wet week in Saundersfoot on the campsite with the filthy toilet block, living on Pot Noodle and crisps because dad couldn't get the barbecue alight!

Marazion is lovely. I’m trying to remember the name of the pub that overlooks St Michael’s Mount. I once had some delicious sardines there.

I requested for my post to be deleted as information is incorrect. Pool is closed.

CurryLover55 · 29/07/2021 16:31

The Godolphin is the pub overlooking St Michael’s Mount.

The good news for anyone whose coming to Cornwall is that the earlier determined tourists have already brought Covid to Cornwall and every other teenager working in catering has got it, recovering or back on shift. All those cafes and restaurants apologising for limited menus and opening hours, that's staff Covid. And it's not a pingdemic, they have actually got Covid.
Public Health England and Cornwall Council haven't advised closing a single one so they are all limping along.
Be nice to the staff, the July tourists were pretty entitled and unpleasant.

Crockof · 29/07/2021 16:32

Sorry op but you've really cheered me up. Was feeling all sad and left out as everyone I know has gone on holiday to Cornwall and I was beginning to think I was wrong to refuse to book overpay a caravan holiday in the unreasonably expensive South West .

Am now happy counting my pennies for my 2022 holiday abroad. Soz Grin

Forget the stiff upper lip! Pack and go home. No judgement from me!
Dc who hauls the most stuff gets the biggest ice-cream(clotted cream and fudge)
Away this minute and get home before the storms.

CosmicComfort · 29/07/2021 16:33

Oh dear, wet holidays are no fun, 8 can imagine in this COVId era of having to plan and book everything months ahead it’s even worse😢

We are off to Yorkshire Saturday, had to plan and book restaurants in June and am keeping everything crossed for mostly dry weather, can cope with cool.

Thankfully it’s just DH and I so not so horrendous.

I hope things improve for you, if they don’t just go home. We have packed up early a few times when the dses were younger and never regretted it.

Maggiesfarm · 29/07/2021 16:35

@BlowDryRat

Looks lovely! I'm just sulking because I was feeling great about being right on an amazing beach so we didn't have to drive anywhere.
The beach is still amazing when it rains.

Are you anywhere near St Ives? That is a gorgeous, interesting place.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 29/07/2021 16:40

This is why I roll my eyes at the usual staycation brigade, the weather in this country is bipolar!

BlowDryRat · 29/07/2021 16:40

We had an excellent dinner at The Godolphin on Sunday.

Our paddleboard sessions got cancelled. There's an offshore wind so our inflatable kayak isn't safe.

On the plus side, the DC just discovered the very realistic mannequins in the gift shop!

Worst holiday. A static caravan in Dorset. When we moved in we could smell something unpleasant. Figured it was just because the caravan had been empty for a while. Spoiler, it wasn’t. On the first night the power quit at nine because no one had said we had a meter. On the second it rained, and the smell got worse. On the third day the smell was so bad I had a look under the caravan so I knew what to report. I saw a small lake containing lumps . One of then was a used tampon. A sewer had burst directly under us. We left right then

keiratwiceknightly · 29/07/2021 16:41

Soaking weather hol activities we have enjoyed before...

Charity shop - who can find the nastiest souvenir for £5, then buy a decent sized jigsaw and do back at the accommodation

There's a huge indoor market at Par, near the Eden P. We found the dvd stall, bought a couple of movies and then the makings of a roast dinner and went back to the place

Gold football is close too - that was a laugh on a cold day (tho wouldn't be fun in rain).

keiratwiceknightly · 29/07/2021 16:41

GOLF football.

Derbee · 29/07/2021 16:41

Not helpful when you just feel like having a moan, but I don’t understand being so reliant on the weather when we live in the UK. You have to assume it will rain, and just be pleasantly surprised if it doesn’t.

Beaches can still be fun in the rain - as PP said, the surf is often better. Wetsuits and body boards. Indoor escape rooms as another PP has mentioned. Board games etc.

Have a cup of tea and watch the Olympics, taking advantage of being away from home and not seeing chores around you that need to be done

diddl · 29/07/2021 16:42

I used to love holidays in Cornwall as a kid.

If it rained we'd often still go for a swim/walk along the beach as it was so quiet!

Fond memories of playing cards/board games/reading & listening to the rain on the caravan roof!

Gingernaut · 29/07/2021 16:44

Before the internet, everything had to be done by post.

My parents rented a 'chalet' in Ramsgate, from an ad at the back of a paper.

Four of us, crammed into a tiny garage/storage unit, which had been built in someone's back garden, along with eight others.

The 'rooms', including a toilet and shower, were walled off with fibreglass curtains and the beds were just thin sponge.

FizziWater · 29/07/2021 16:44

Oh dear.
I once went to Cornwall for two weeks. It was 1977 and we went abroad every year after that until last year. It rained solidly for 14 days and we were in a B&B. There was nothing to do that didn't involve traffic jams and rain.
I am going to Filey in late August. I started trying to book restaurants this week the best ones were already booked up....

bizboz · 29/07/2021 16:45

Ah yes, I remember a very wet week camping in St Austell about 10 years ago. It was the last summer holiday in Cornwall I took. I think we went to the Eden project about 3 times. On showery days we did things like go to Polperro/Padstow for a look round which was still quite nice.

ShadowInVain · 29/07/2021 16:47

The ice cream is mostly dairy-free or uses sugar alternatives. It's Cornwall, home of clotted cream

FFS - that would really annoy me. I rarely have ice cream so when I do I want a proper one. Choice of dairy/dairy free - fine. No dairy option and artificial sweeteners - no.

MrsRussell · 29/07/2021 16:49

If ice cream is your thing you need to scope out Moomaid of Zennor.....

NothingIsWrong · 29/07/2021 16:50

Oooh also we went to The Range in Penzance and bought some cheap craft kits and they took up a good few hours

TeardropImplodes · 29/07/2021 16:55

@BlowDryRat that's Tim Hunkin, the Eden Project have commissioned some amazing pieces over the years.

Google ' Secret life of Machines'

DottyHarmer · 29/07/2021 16:55

@Gingernaut -ha! My dad booked some rum holidays out of the local paper. Really memorable was a caravan in Swanage. It was in the middle of a field and had no facilities - no electricity and no loo. Very happy memories of my mum racing across the field to the toilets in the corner pursued by cows. And then the cows barged into the caravan and my mum was crying that we were all going to die Grin .
