Does your area have a Grey Lady myth?

Working on my thesis which is folklore based and keep seeing various versions of the Grey Lady myth pop up.

Does your area have one, and if so, what is it? 😁

Interesting question. Have heard rumours of one a few miles from us at an old medieval manor house that used to belong to the actress Vivien Leigh & her first husband in the 1930s.

NordicBerry · 28/07/2021 19:25

There were many Grey Lady myths about Oxney Bottom in Kent. I've been working on my family tree and have found one of my distantish relatives was the Butler there.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 28/07/2021 19:33

What’s a grey lady myth? Like a local ghost story?

There’s a very elaborate one from where I come from- apparently on the anniversary of her death, a headless Anne Boleyn rides in a carriage along the main road with four horsemen of the apocalypse Confused

If you get in her way she will throw her head at you.

My town doesn't have a grey lady but we do have a ghost car driven by a red headed woman.

Eleoura · 28/07/2021 19:39

What is a grey lady myth??? Never heard of it Confused

idontevenknowanyonecalledblurb · 28/07/2021 19:41

Yes- temple newsham near us has a grey lady (or she may be white!) that haunts the corridors- of course everyone has had a encounter or story to tell!

MrsBungle · 28/07/2021 19:45

Ours is a white woman! She wanders the loch searching for her long, lost child who drowned.

QuestionableMouse · 28/07/2021 19:50

The Grey Lady myth is of a ghost that haunts an area who is called... The Grey Lady. 🤷🏻‍♀️😁

Yes.

Theatre royal Newcastle has a grey lady.
She was once the wife of a rich business man who fell in love with a touring actor. They were supposed to run away together but he never turned up. So she went to his final show, stood in the gods and leapt into the stalls to her death. She haunts the theatre warning others from falling in love with travelling actors.

IHateCoronavirus · 28/07/2021 19:53

Ours was attached to our school. The bell from the library bell tower fell on her and killed her, now she haunts the school and the graveyard at the end of the school drive.

Leavesofautumn · 28/07/2021 19:54

Never heard of it.

Biancadelrioisback · 28/07/2021 19:54

Also has a haunted viewing box which occasionally, when the theatre is dark, is full of jovial sounds of men drinking and eating. But when people go to investigate there is nothing there.

Katshouldnotswim · 28/07/2021 19:55

Yes, an inn at the top of a very high pass.

NorthernBelle84 · 28/07/2021 19:58

Nc in case outing . . . 😁

The Grey Lady who killed herself when Bobby Shaftoe didn't marry her, supposedly haunts both Brancepeth Castle and Durham Castle (University College) as well as possibly Beamish. Though I think the Beamish version is probably an addition for tourist value.

Biancadelrioisback · 28/07/2021 19:58

Also something about stage crew who died due to scenes and pieces of set falling on them. Back in ye olde days, to signal set/scene changes the stage hands would whistle. Often if someone whistled a tune or made a whistle sound accidentally, another stage hand would drop the scenery and kill an actor or crew. So whistling is banned on stage in case the ghosts hear and drop the sets

Biancadelrioisback · 28/07/2021 19:59

Sorry, I used to work there and have heard the stories many times. Grey lady is the most famous. And the theatre is located on.... Grey Street.

bellabride · 28/07/2021 20:00

Old hospitals always seemed to have a Grey Lady.

I thought Beamish had a different story?
EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 28/07/2021 20:02

Yes a couple. One is supposed to be a nun and the other is apparently Lord Byrons first love

Didiusfalco · 28/07/2021 20:02

Interesting. I don’t think there is near me, but I don’t live in an area steeped in history. Is this similar to The Woman in Black by Susan Hill just grey?

AdoptedBumpkin · 28/07/2021 20:03

There is supposed to be one at Bolsover Castle, not so far away. Probably some others as well - I will Google.

Elys3 · 28/07/2021 20:04

There’s a blue lady near me, would she count? Wink

FiveGoMadInDorset · 28/07/2021 20:04

Yes, haunts the Castle in the village, last seen when the castle burnt down by the firemen.

We also have a headless coachman and rather bizarrely a ghost legion of roman soldiers

Curioushorse · 28/07/2021 20:05

OP, what's your thesis in? Or, if that's too specific- what's your subject area? I'm nosy and can't work out what subject would be ok with this really interesting topic!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 28/07/2021 20:05

Every army camp I lived on that had been an RAF base in WW2 was haunted by deceased airmen. Usually drinking in the mess.

And the camp in Germany, which has been an SS base, was haunted by a young soldier.
