Boys with long hair

LST · 28/07/2021 17:18

Why do people feel the need to pass judgement of bots who choose to have long hair?

It's happened a lot. Especially with older family members but I and ds just shrug those comments off. When a complete strangers tells him he'll 'need that cutting before he goes back to school' I just find it takes the piss!

No real reason for the post really apart from a bit of a rant. As you were!

I meant boys.. not bots

DS has wonderful long hair. He only gets positive words about it.

We do make sure it's tied up for school though.

He is 7.

It is tied back for school. He can do it himself now too.

It really annoys people doesnt it.

My brother has very long hair until his early 20s. All his mates did. It was more a grungy rocker thing. He did get called ‘a lassie’ a few times from behind (he was shaper and skinny back in the day).

IsThisAkissingBook · 28/07/2021 17:23

My son is 8 and has very long hair by choice (huge wwe fan). He wears it up in a bobble or back in a head band. I don't have friends or family but have heard some people at the school comment.

ImNotWhoYouThinkIam · 28/07/2021 17:24

Because people are twats. DS2 has gorgeous long hair. People always think he's a girl, although they look confused if he's not wearing a mask as he also has the start of a beard and moustache Grin

Anordinarymum · 28/07/2021 17:25

As long as it is your child who wants his hair long and not you........... then ignore the comments.

It really does! My nan was trying to brib him with Lego to get it cut the other week (she was 'joking'). Apparently it's 'too hot' for him to have long hair... No idea how she thinks girls cope?

Better give him a shirt back and sides quick or he might catch The Gay

Oh it's 100% his choice. His older brother went to get his hair cut last week and my youngest was asked if he wanted his done and he said no. He was with us too so sat and watched his brother get his done.

My dad has hair down to his mid back and he wants to be like him.

When ds was five/six he had longish hair. FIL asked us if we wanted ds to be gay 🙄
Ds is now 14 and has long hair. FIL asked if he was gay. Ds was 🤨 and I was 😡. Ds called FIL out on his homophobia.

Crazy. I just don't understand why it irks people so?!

My 13 year old has waist length blonde ringlets, entirely his choice. When he was younger people were bothered now not so much, (though they still mistake him for a girl) probably because he's now very self assured and is capable of politely correcting people.

littletinyboxes · 28/07/2021 17:39

My DS has long curly hair. He has had it short sometimes when he was younger but actively wants to have it longer. I don't think it's a big deal what hair cut he has but some of his teachers in primary school did. More than once I have been taken to one side at pick up to suggest that perhaps he should have a haircut over the holidays. I have explained to them that it is regularly trimmed but DS does not want a short haircut and I have no intention of forcing one on him- the head teacher's response to that was to ask if I knew why (in a sort of concerned voice, as if to say that this must be a sign of some problem). One teacher expressed concern that he might get teased by other boys as he got older. My DD had much longer hair when she was at the same school and it was never mentioned.

Thankfully, the senior school don't seem to have any issue with it and actually far from teasing him quite a few of the other boys are growing their hair as they get older.

DS has been called she in the past and he has loudly stated 'I am a boy'.

Why do people always assume it’s the parents making some sort of statement?

As pp said, do you also think short hair on boys (and long hair on girls) is the parents choice too? As it often is, more so than the other way round…

That's shocking! The school he is at haven't mentioned anything at all about the length. Just that it was long enough he needed a swimming cap for swimming. I did think that would make him want to get it cut as they're a pain to put on but it didn't

Not only does my 11 year old have long wavy fair hair (it used to be halfway down his back but he wanted it cut to shoulder-length so it was easier to keep tidy) but he also has the beginnings of a moustache.

His role model is Asterix. Looking forward to THAT phone call from the school. "Well the rules don't SAY you can't have a long moustache?"

I've just had to Google! That is brilliant!

Well, King Charles II had long hair and it didn't do him any harm.

Hold on, I think they cut his head off...

... as you were.

Somarefuser · 28/07/2021 17:58

It’s purely fashion.
I was a teen in the 70s. Short hair was for dads, very uncool.

It was Charles 1 had his head chopped off. His son was fine, and popular with the ladies. Cavalier, not Roundhead.

DeadButDelicious · 28/07/2021 18:00

My husband has long hair, he started growing it when he was around 14. Aside from one or two extreme trims (taking it to shoulder length) he's kept it very long the whole time I've known him.

Currently it's almost waist length, gorgeously curly and beautifully ginger. He STILL gets comments about it. I really don't get why some people have such an issue with long hair on men and boys.
