Favourite London Bus Route?

I appreciate this is niche.

Reminiscing about when I had no money and a baby that loved being on the bus. Could take the 38 from almost outside my hackney flat, with him in the carrier. Sit on the top deck and go to the west end all the way to Victoria and back.

More recently I've been a fan of the 15.

  1. Love the trundle up Whitehall.

Or the 94 for nostalgia, because it used to take me on shopping expeditions I the big Topshop.

smallandimperfectlyformed · 26/07/2021 19:20

I used to love the 53 because it felt like a tourist bus but they changed where it terminated quite a long time ago now!

RubyFakeLips · 26/07/2021 19:24

I regularly used to take the 94 to Holland Park.

Don't know the 53. Sounds like the 25, used to go from Ilford all the way to Oxford Circus but now it terminates at St Pauls. Very annoying for my mum and it's still just as busy.

I used to work in Battersea where the 19 starts/ends and in my naivety as a new in Londen-er I once caught it to somewhere like Islington in my lunch break not realising it would take about 3 hours as it goes all through the West End!

reallyworriedjobhunter · 26/07/2021 19:25

The 274 would take me from my flat near Camden Square to the back door of Selfridges. Not that I have ever shopped there.

The 29 was once accurately described by Alexi Sale as a riot on wheels.

HopelesslydevotedtoGu · 26/07/2021 19:26

I liked the RV1, it went along the Southbank and to my previous flat. The "RV" (for riverview) name made it feel like a special bus!

Karmagoat · 26/07/2021 19:26

Number 15 bus back in the day, from Commercial road Stepney up to the West End (Oxford Street)

onemouseplace · 26/07/2021 19:27

The 159. An old style routemaster route that I could throw myself on anywhere on Oxford Street to get home.

Gregwiggle · 26/07/2021 19:27

Following as I'd like to do some London buses next time I go up.

PsychoSyd · 26/07/2021 19:27

The number 9 goes from Charing Cross by Trafalgar Square, then along Picadilly & Green Park, Hyde Park Corner & through Knightsbridge past the Albert Hall before finishing up in Hammersmith.

Or the old number 10, which started at Kings Cross & went all through Bloomsbury & down Oxford Street.

Clymene · 26/07/2021 19:27

Numbers 9, 15, 19 and 73 off the top of my head Grin

Mufflette · 26/07/2021 19:28

Always the number 9, I used to take a long way home from work sometimes just to sit and do the tourist but from the top deck. Especially when it was sometimes one of the old Routemasters, I loved that.

smallandimperfectlyformed · 26/07/2021 19:37

I think I have identified myself as a South East Londoner! The 53 starts in Plumstead, then goes onto Woolwich, Charlton and Blackheath before going into Deptford, Old Kent Road and Elephant and Castle before terminating in Lambeth North. I am sure it used to go all the way to Trafalgar Square though

RubyFakeLips · 26/07/2021 19:39

Christ haven't been on the 9 in years, might have to do a memory lane trip over the summer

The 25 isn't the 25 if it terminates at St Paul's.
Bigbus · 26/07/2021 19:41

When my DS was little we used to take the 77 from start to finish - Tooting to Waterloo - then get out and see the river, then get the next one back again. It was a lovely cheap day out!

Kaftankween · 26/07/2021 19:42

Yes used to love the 94 through Chiswick then looking in the windows of Holland Park mansions. Jump off outside selfridges

gothicsprout · 26/07/2021 19:44

Personal nostalgic fave - the C10, trundling around the Rotherhithe peninsula.

Also an honourable mention for 1 - purely for the novelty, how do they decide the numbering??

DameAlyson · 26/07/2021 19:48

It did!

The No 11 is a good one. From Victoria, passes W. Abbey, Houses of Parliament, Whitehall, Traf Square, St Paul's, terminating at L'pool St.

claracluck1978 · 26/07/2021 19:48

I came on to say 15 and 73 but have been beaten by other lovers of those routes

Usernamenotavailabletryanother · 26/07/2021 19:49

Nothing beats the 19; when the last routemasters ran this route, a friend and I spent all day riding it. There were parties, singing conductors, someone got on with a double bass and played while everyone danced. Ah…

Also the 159, 55, 8 and 26. All the buses that went from my front door into town. And the old 11 route because it was just so long.

I now live in a part of zone 3 which does not have a single direct bus route into town. I am heartbroken 💔

ADragonCalledKeith · 26/07/2021 19:50

Oh I love the 15! Used to stop outside my flat and I'd catch it to Blackfriars then walk 2ish mike's to work. Skint at the time.

The 159 was the fun bus for nights out and rides home.

Love the 344 - it goes everywhere.

RubyFakeLips · 26/07/2021 19:52

@twilightcafe Things are not what they were

No mentions for the 11 or 24?!

OP posts:
RubyFakeLips · 26/07/2021 19:52

I'm too slow, 11 has entered the hall of fame

I love the 24 from Victoria to Hampstesd, it turns past Parliament, Whitehall up through charing X Rd, Camden then to Hampstead. I agree the 19, I used to get it from Battersea to UCH which took hours unless it was 6am
