Gutted. Mini break spoiled.

I'm gutted. 3 months ago we booked a 2 night stay at a Michelin star restaurant and hotel for my birthday later in the year. It was a dinner, bed and breakfast rate and dinner at the Michelin star restaurant included in the price plus a reservation made at their other restaurant for the other nights stay.

I emailed today to ask what time the reservations were as we wanted to plan some activities in the day time and they've responded saying they are really sorry but someone made a mistake and didn't make the reservation for either restaurant when the booking was made and now they are full.

We can switch to a bed and breakfast rate, but there aren't really any restaurants within walking distance (it's a small village in Cumbria so taxis are very hit and miss) so it would spoil the break a little as one of us would have to drive. We can't move the date as we have 2 young children and only get child care very infrequently.

I'm just a bit gutted. Was really looking forward to it. I've had a look and there's very little availability elsewhere for our dates. Certainly nothing of the same caliber and all much more expensive now.

Just having a rant really!

I'd ask them to pay for a taxi to and from a restaurant. They've admitted their error so I'd like to think they'd be interested in helping you find a solution.

FionnulaTheCooler · 22/07/2021 19:01

Would they not be willing to let you order from the restaurant menu and have it as room service instead?

GoWalkabout · 22/07/2021 19:04

That's rather crap of them. Can you go back to them and ask how they suggest your break is rescued?

I would suggest that a newer booking should be cancelled to accommodate you

skywardspieces · 22/07/2021 19:07

Is it Cartmel? If so, do they not have anything next door at the other restaurant? Or at Henrock, his other restaurant in Windermere?

If its not Cartmel, I'd ask them to book a taxi to somewhere as a previous PP said. Local to the area so happy to give recommendations.

Growtheroses · 22/07/2021 19:10

That's really disappointing op and mmmm, their excuse sounds a bit dubious to me. To forget to make dinner reservations for two nights is quite a loss of revenue and even stranger when you are resident. Are you sure you haven't been bumped for a VIP? How did you leave it with them?

CormoranStrike · 22/07/2021 19:11

I’d be asking them to cancel someone else -

JoborPlay · 22/07/2021 19:13

@NotPersephone

Gah, was it L’Enclume? Bollocks, I bet you’re really disappointed.

Don’t they have a slightly less swanky place nearby?

We’ve eaten at Hrishi (sp?) in bowness. I was dubious but it was spectacular - would that be an option?

No, but very similar. L'enclume & Rogan and co (their other places) both full. We've done RHiSHi before, very nice and also full!

Very strange if the accommodation part is OK. I would be asking them to resolve the matter quite urgently.

AustinPowerful · 22/07/2021 19:22

I would be telling them they need to come up with a solution for you that includes dinner as that was the offer that you booked- the hotel need to rectify their mistake here.

JoborPlay · 22/07/2021 19:23

I've said we're disappointed and is there no way they can fit us in either restaurant on either night. Not sure what we'll do about the accomodation, it wasn't anything spectacular. It was the food I booked it for!

Yep, this!
ToomuchHeat · 22/07/2021 19:24

I’d ask them to refund the entire booking
Maybe look at elsewhere. The new Grand Hotel in Birmingham and Adam’s?

sittingonacornflake · 22/07/2021 19:25

I agree a newer booking should be cancelled to accommodate you.

Mindymomo · 22/07/2021 19:26

I know it’s not the same, but could they not arrange something in your room of in the bar.

Zilla1 · 22/07/2021 19:27

I would bat it back and say the purpose of the booking was directly linked to the food and ask what they propose to do and remind them you've incurred significant costs to prepare so they can't just offer to cancel the accommodation booking and expect everything to be fine? Ask them to describe exactly what went wrong. Good luck.

EastWestWhosBest · 22/07/2021 19:28

Ooh. That really rather sucks. I would be as mad as all hell.

ElizabethTudor · 22/07/2021 19:28

It’s their cock-up so I’d be expecting them to sort it tbh.

Georgyporky · 22/07/2021 19:29

What have you got in writing from when you made the reservation?
That could influence your next steps.

theotherfossilsister · 22/07/2021 19:30

Name then.

I don't normally say this, but this really sucks.

Flowers500 · 22/07/2021 19:30

They fucked up, they need to sort. You booked for the food and did so ages ago, th why need to either make room for you or cancel a later booking. Absolute chancers.

Angelica789 · 22/07/2021 19:30

That’s really infuriating. I think if it is their mistake they should be doing something to help you out.

Nuggetnugget · 22/07/2021 19:32

I would want to receive eve a full refund if they cannot cancel a newer booking especially as you are resident.

EnjoyingTheSilence · 22/07/2021 19:33

Agree with others. They messed up, they should be bending over backwards to resolve this
