Positive and negative!

I went to Las Vegas, glad I went, but no desire to return! :)

Would never return to Warwick Castle. It's quite over rated...and not much even happened there, it just looks the part! :)

Coventry and Staffordshire. Had a boyfriend who lived in both places and both of them holes.

JustMeAndWheatley · 22/07/2021 16:04

Bruges - dull

Lindisfarne - weird vibe, unsettling

Brighton - too noisy, not my cup of tea at all

Carcassonne - too touristy and soulless. Might consider it one day out of season

Calke Abbey - hated it. Another weird vibe place. Would go to the grounds again.

Lisbon - didn’t like being pestered all the by people trying to sell me things, or interrupted by wandering musicians when I’m having dinner.. That was years ago and friends who’ve been more recently tell me it’s not like that so much now.

Munich - grand and showy architecture but left me cold

Love Berlin and the bits of Australia I’ve visited.

FogHornInTheAttic · 22/07/2021 16:05

I'd never go to Turkey again either.Fine if you're a man but(the men) are v pervu towards women.I hated it.

BarbaraofSeville · 22/07/2021 16:05

Why do so many people go to 'Brits abroad' type places like some parts of the Algarve, Costa del Sol etc if that's not what they like?

Every single one of those areas/places/islands has other areas that are much quieter/more authentic with local food and interesting things to do. Why not go there instead?

JustMeAndWheatley · 22/07/2021 16:05

Loved Hong Kong but wouldn’t go back under the current political regime

DPotter · 22/07/2021 16:05

In no particular order

Will never return to -
Legoland - soul-less, over hyped and expensive place
Blackpool - felt threatening & unsafe mid afternoon
Alice Springs - felt threatening & unsafe mid afternoon

Places I Can't wait to go back - well I could tell you but I don't want too many people to go and spoil it for me so I'll give you clues - France, Greek Islands and Denmark

Eastereggfan · 22/07/2021 16:06

Bologna.

HarebrightCedarmoon · 22/07/2021 16:06

Buxton was a great disappointment. Not sure what I expected, some nice shops and cafés at least perhaps? Not a shitty little mall, an Iceland and loads of charity shops. It's funny as I grew up not that far away but had never really been, apart from perhaps when I was little and don't remember it. I think I was expecting it to be the Bath of the North.

skywardspieces · 22/07/2021 16:06

Copenhagen. I'm sentimental about the trip because of the circumstances in which DP and I went there but it was pretty dull, especially in pouring rain, and was expensive for food and drink. I would like to go back to see what we did 'wrong', as people rave about it, but DP says he can't be arsed with the risk of it being equally dull and expensive a second time round.

Singapore feels very sterile and a bit soulless. Spent 3 days there and was done by the end of the first day.

Moscow. Such an interesting history, but felt threatening and dangerous.

mafted · 22/07/2021 16:06

Centreparcs and Haven. Although I'll probably end up going back because family.
Both have crap accommodation, dire eateries and are full of screaming, badly behaved kids and annoying adults.
The main difference is in Haven the adults bellow at the kids in an attempt to discipline them, in CP they just look on proudly or meekly say the child's name as their offspring do a poo in the park or attempt to maim a duckling.
At least in Haven you can breathe without being charged £19 pp for the privilege.

MissVanji · 22/07/2021 16:06

Vegas isn't for everyone but I absolutely loved it, would 100% go back and do intend to.

I went to Silverstone last weekend for the GP and definitely wouldn't go back, was a nightmare.

Also Blackpool I went with a group of girlfriends a few years ago in November was expecting pretty Xmas lights and a good weekend away. We drove up the seafront to our hotel and I kid you not one of the b&bs still had a sign in the window saying "now with colour TV's". I thought I was in The Walking Dead.

Deathraystare · 22/07/2021 16:06

Done Marrakesh - won'[t go back. The trips we did were great but the local men.... Went with a friend to sit in a local park and got hasselled. Unfortunately, my friend lapped up any male attention (sigh).

Turkey - went with same friend (don't learn do I???). She decided to sunbathe topless and went in the sea - surrounded by men, the relied on me to keep them at bay! Hello! Muslim country! Not a good idea to go topless!

I actually loved Barcelona.

Also Malta - yeah it is back in the 1950s but people friendly, sweet little carnival where local lads do not stab each other but cheerfully dance in front of the floats, can in one hand , fag in another. Mind you this was before that journalist was murdered!

Hate Croydon with a passion. (Used to live near there).

Loved Venice but prob won't go back.

Quite liked Paris but smelly and every time we went into a cafe for a drink it was either closing or you had to eat something with it. The vegetarian restaurants were crap too. Very 'worthy hippy' and the Thai restaurant we went to did not seem to have half the ingredients you would normally expect. Weird.

I did enjoy China but it was bloody cold when I went. My mistake, I rarely feel the cold so hadn't taken my Aunt seriously when she told me what she was taking to wear. Got 'Beijing throat' because of the pollution but the 'wine' we had every night at dinner (more like a sweet liquer) sorted that out nicely.

Albania - was interesting. An elderly Irish woman declared it looked like Southern Ireland. They had not opened up then (they seem to have done just lately) and wherever we went there were soldiers lurking.

Slovenia - I love, love loved this place! So beautiful with it's lakes and mountains. Yes I would go back.

Loved Crete though I confess it was so hot I spent much of the time in the pool! Kefalonia was ok but it was towards the end of the season and all the locals lived up in the hills. The local bus took hours to get to the capital (we were at the bus stop in pitch black at 5.30 am (saw loads of stars!) and had to shine torches so the bus knew to stop!
I liked Vietnam but not a place for nervous pedestrians (motor bikes everywhere!!!). Only had tourist food and found it very bland and sweet. I had the most disgusting tomato juice - it was like syrup!!!

Used to like Brighton -(wonderful record fair there) but not now.

BarbaraofSeville · 22/07/2021 16:08

Lisbon - didn’t like being pestered all the by people trying to sell me things, or interrupted by wandering musicians when I’m having dinner.. That was years ago and friends who’ve been more recently tell me it’s not like that so much now

I went to Lisbon for work a couple of years ago and thought it was lovely and was never pestered, even as a woman on my own. It definitely went on the 'I'll come back here for a proper city break' list.

anniegun · 22/07/2021 16:10

@rothbury

Japan. Felt really unsafe the whole time. Would never return.
It is the safest country in the world!
Untradwife · 22/07/2021 16:11

Blackpool for me, it sucked the life blood out of me.

PP mentioned Dublin. I'm Irish and I hate the city centre, full of drug addicts and drug paraphernalia. Mountjoy Jail is well worth a visit. Our tour guide was a history student she was very informative and her passion for history shun through her presentation.
West Cork is spectacular, the scenery is breathtaking, miles of unspoilt beaches, fantastic pubs and restaurants and not as overpriced as Dublin. The locals are very friendly and welcoming. Anywhere in the West of Ireland is also beautiful especially if you go out to Connemara ; wild, unadulterated beauty. Outside of Dublin, Ireland has so much to offer.

I find New York and London over-rated

SpeckledyHen · 22/07/2021 16:11

Venice . 5 days of churches and canals was quite enough for me .

Otherpeoplesteens · 22/07/2021 16:11

Oświęcim in Poland. Utterly unremarkable little town were it not that the German name for it is Auschwitz. Glad I went, would be happy to never go back.

Agen in France. The place was dead on its arse. Drug-taking in plain sight, not a single restaurant open in the town centre, even the (many) stray dogs had just given up and laid down wherever they pleased. Finally found an Anglophile café owner who would do us a plate of food, he drank most of the two litres of wine he put out for us on the house while practising his English, then got in his car and drove off.

Bolton. After 5pm it's like the inspiration for Night of the Living Dead.

Orsdall in Salford. Once had a black cab refuse to take me there for my own safety.

Mrs08 · 22/07/2021 16:14

I'd never go back to;
Norfolk
Stonehenge
Stoke on trent
Blackpool
Skegness
Lake District

Bloodybridget · 22/07/2021 16:14

Kyrgyzstan. Had some fascinating experiences, and were offered amazing hospitality by the family we stayed with, but it confirmed my suspicion that creature comforts rank very high on my list of travel essentials.

IReallyLikeCrows · 22/07/2021 16:14

Athens. I did not like it.

I can't remember if it was Blaenavon or Blaina, either way, it wasn't the fault of the town but I went to stay with some friends of an ex and they lived on an estate that was like the one in Rita, Sue and Bob came too only bleaker, more run-down, more lacking in anything approaching hope. We only stayed for a night but that was enough to make me feel that it was the sort of place you'd go if you'd given up on life and wanted to commit suicide. It's the bleakest place I've ever been in and I grew up on a rough council estate in London.

Numnumcookie · 22/07/2021 16:14

San Francisco - poverty, homeless including war veterans and people with mental health difficulties who should be cared for. Came away feeling so glad the UK has a benefits system and free healthcare system which avoids most of what we saw in San Fran. The nice bits of the trip just didn't compensate for it. Also the weather being a high pressure area, I had very intense migraines when there - the US's over the counter pain killers were good though!

Las Vegas - absolutely loved it for the 3 days we were there (included a trip to the Grand Canyon and Hoover Dam) but don't want to go back as there's nothing else to do once you've done that. Just gambling. 3 days was definitely enough.

Albania - some beautiful scenery but felt very unwelcoming.

PhilCornwall1 · 22/07/2021 16:14

Rotherham. I had to go there for work. I refused to ever go back.

Mixmeup · 22/07/2021 16:15

To add to Brighton - the only thing worse than Brighton is HOVE.

Basically exactly the same place but thinks it’s better and is actually worse. A snobby, dirty little suburb of a horrid town.

Batsy · 22/07/2021 16:17

Kushadasi in Turkey (sorry if its spelled wrong) did an overnight there on the way to Ephesus and HATED it, was a god awful place.

I dislike people writing off entire areas though.. like some one upthread that wrote of the Midlands like its some homogenous lump with nothing worth visiting.

I guess Ironbridge, being a world heritage site, or the gorgeous canals, or entire towns like Worcester, Shrewsbury, Hereford and Lichfield need writing off.. or the walks in the Shropshire Hills.... nothing worth coming here for at all i guess.

waterlego · 22/07/2021 16:17

Agree on Lisbon @BarbaraofSeville. DH and I went a few years ago for a gig and had a really wonderful time. I loved Lisbon!
