Is this too much alcohol?

Is a bottle of gin in 4 days a lot for one person?

I rarely drink and if I do it’s maybe tow or three drinks a night once or twice a week. I’ve noticed a new man seems to easily drink a bottle of gin a week, or even in a matter of days.

I don’t know if that’s normal drinking really as I don’t do it

It's obviously normal for him - and bothering you. If you raise it in conversation, he will be defensive and make you look like the odd one out here (I speak from experience)

NaToth · 20/07/2021 12:53

Sorry, posted too soon.

These things also have a tendency to escalate, so if you're not comfortable with one bottle of gin a week, how would you feel about two?

How big is the bottle? I think there are about 40 units in a litre of gin, so if it’s that size bottle, that’s a health-damaging amount to be sinking in a week it less.

Wolfiefan · 20/07/2021 12:55

That’s a LOT!
He sounds like a functioning (at the moment) alcoholic. Don’t get any deeper.

Andthenwhats · 20/07/2021 12:58

I literally have zero knowledge of anything alcohol based! I probably sound very naive!

The bottle says 70cl?

OP posts:
PurpleDaisies · 20/07/2021 13:00

That’s probably thirty or so units. If he’s getting through two bottles in eight days, that’s going to be more 50 to 60 in a week, assuming it’s a standard 70cl bottle.

That’s massively over what’s recommended. I doubt you’ll change him though, and if he’s a new man I’d be considering very seriously whether I wanted to be with someone who drinks that heavilyz. It would be a dealbreaker for me.

Wolfiefan · 20/07/2021 13:01

The bottle will say a number of units.

yoshiblue · 20/07/2021 13:06

That's 28 units and men are recommended to have 14 units per week, so yes it is a lot.

4PawsGood · 20/07/2021 13:08

That’s quite a lot. If it’s over a special weekend with friends staying, then it’s ok. If it’s just you two and you’re not really drinking much then it’s a bit worrying.

Did he comment to say, ‘yikes, can’t believe that’s all gone’ when it was finished?

PurpleDaisies · 20/07/2021 13:09

Is that typical of his alcohol consumption or was it a blow out weekend?

girlmom21 · 20/07/2021 13:09

So how many drinks does he get out of a bottle?

Bryonyshcmyony · 20/07/2021 13:11

So a 70cl bottle over four days is over 6 single measures of gin a day - ateast three double gins so yes a lot

HarrisMcCoo · 20/07/2021 13:12

No idea as I don't drink gin. I buy occasionally a bottle of wine but that will last two nights then I don't drink again for weeks.

Fluffycloudland77 · 20/07/2021 13:13

Yes it’s too much.

Andthenwhats · 20/07/2021 13:13

Well I only noticed as when i turned up Sunday, there was a new bottle partly drank. Last Wednesday there was another 3/4 full one and this one was new. Today it’s got a tiny bit left

But who, when making a drink at home, uses 'proper' measures. That could be 2 or 3 home-sized drinks which isn't really a lot if you're a regular drinker.
NoYOUbekind · 20/07/2021 13:14

That is a lot. We went through a phase of going through gin like that and the solution was to dig out the cocktail measure from the back of the cupboard and actually use it - turns out we were both pouring massive measures. So it could easily be something like this - otoh, if he isn't worried about it (like I was) then it could be a sign he drinks too much.

Andthenwhats · 20/07/2021 13:14

Also noticed a few weeks ago that there is a drawer with a stack of unopened bottles. I see him weekly and many are gone but I’ve never seen him drink from them

OP posts:
PurpleDaisies · 20/07/2021 13:15

How many drinks it is is irrelevant. Its the volume of alcohol he’s consumed. That’s way over the recommended weekly limit.

Bryonyshcmyony · 20/07/2021 13:15

@girlmom21

I do!

Andthenwhats · 20/07/2021 13:15

He’s a doctor though and I’ve never seen him leave for work drunk!!

I do. And sloshing a triple gin in a glass still makes it a triple gin.

PurpleDaisies · 20/07/2021 13:17

How would you know if he was still drunk? You don’t need to be slurring and falling down to be legally over the limit for driving.

Plenty of doctors struggle with drinking too much.

BritInAus · 20/07/2021 13:26

If you've seen a well stocked drawer which seems to deplete on a regular basis, and you don't see him drink from it, this would suggest he is drinking - a lot - in secret. This doesn't sound good.
