Percy from The Green Mile is on my list
The Captain from Pan's Labyrinth.
At least Half of the characters in Wuthering Heights.

There's a lot more but my mind has just gone blank.

Who are your nominations?

This is England- Lol's Dad, Mick Angry

DuesToTheDirt · 19/07/2021 20:40

Becky Sharpe in Vanity Fair. I know lots of people love her, but she's a nasty selfish cow.

I love a thread where Napoleon from Animal Farm is called a prick.

Abner Brown in The Box of Delights.
Fledgeby from Our Mutual Friend
Moonface from the Faraway Tree books. Complete prick.

@BlackKnightinYellowWellies

Professor Umbridge. Evil with a giggle is the worst.
Agreed

I'm re-reading Order of the Phoenix for the 10th time and she gets worse each time

Haven't read the full thread so might already have been mentioned, but the Malfoy parents in Harry Potter. Quite happy for other people's children to be killed in the name of Voldemort, but suddenly have a change of heart when it's their son in the firing line at the end of the last book. The fact that Narcissa would have told Voldemort that Harry was still alive if he'd told her Draco was dead suggests that if Draco had died she'd have wanted the world to burn and for Harry to be killed by Voldemort again. But it's fine for Cedric Diggory and co to be killed. Obviously Voldemort is pure evil but in terms of 'loathsome' I think the Malfoy's fit the bill.

Luca Brasi from The Godfather.

StColumbofNavron · 19/07/2021 21:11

@moynomore

Angel from Tess of d'Ubervilles. I think almost more odious than Alec.
I don’t almost feel this. I feel this with every fibre of my being. Alec was a c**t but Angel, there is a special place in hell for him.

I have recently been revisiting Malory Towers with DD and absolutely can’t believe what a little cow Alicia is. Yes, Gwen is a bit annoying and lazy, and not very jolly-hockey-sticks, but what a horrific bully Alicia is. Absolutely can’t wait to see her get get measles isn’t he next book.

I re read them over lockdown. I was horrified how awful the supposed "good" characters are! Horrid snobs.

Oh, yes - Billy's brother.

Think I have to block that book out - possibly the most heartbreaking last line of a book took

Sp1ke3 · 20/07/2021 00:13

I am so glad that so many people despise Angel Clare. I have been fuming about him since my A level 30 years ago!

Geordieoldgirl · 20/07/2021 00:23

Another vote for Becky Sharpe. Detested her.

BillyShears · 20/07/2021 00:26

Mrs. Reed in Jane Eyre. Spiteful old bitch.

Derbee · 20/07/2021 00:26

Bing, the obnoxious spoilt little twat of a rabbit

2LostSoulsSwimmingInAFishBowl · 20/07/2021 00:34

Claire- Outlander. So smug all the time
Xander- Buffy. Cheated on Cordelia, left Anya at the alter, nothing is ever his fault
Sabrina Spellman- chilling adventures of
Sabrina. Was great at first but gradually got more and more stupid and self absorbed
Dr Turner- call the midwife. Literally just there to mansplain stuff to all the women characters in the most condescending way possible
Peppa fucking Pig- odious pork scratching

MurielSpriggs · 20/07/2021 00:43

Yahweh from the Old Testament.

Jealous and proud of it. A petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak. A vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser. A misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully. Really no redeeming features.

(He never had any proper parenting, which could have been at the heart of it.)

Twiggyandcrisp · 20/07/2021 00:49

Joyce Barnaby in Midsomer Murders

Phoenixrising2020 · 20/07/2021 00:50

Murdstone in David Copper field. Detestable.

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 20/07/2021 00:52

Jabba the Hut. His personality is as slimy as his body.

youvemademyshitlist · 20/07/2021 01:07

Pereira McLeod- she has no redeeming features whatsoever. How she bagged lovely Luke is beyond me. She and Red deserved each other.

Ted Mosby - insufferable snob. There's no way lovely Marshall would be best friends with someone like Ted.
(Also, Robin, Lily, Stella and Zoey were all awful in How I Met Your Mother and I'm on the fence about Barney)

I second Grandpa Joe, apparently there's a whole subreddit about how dreadful he is Grin

echt · 20/07/2021 01:10

Iago
Another one for Angel Clare. Sanctimonious twunt.
John Bunting in "Snowtown". A bit niche, I know. Superb film though not for the squeamish.

DufferMum · 20/07/2021 02:02

Boy Dougdale.. just ugh!
